    Ghost sign for Parkinsons' Ltd., a manufacturing chemist. There are at least two layers to this sign with the most recent layer reading: 'Quality Parkinsons' Pills / Famous since 1848'. The second layer reads: 'Pills from Parkinsons'. The second half of the older layer is more difficult to make out, but it may say 'makers of'. Parkinsons' Ltd. was founded by Richard Parkinsons and his brother in 1848 as a manufacturing chemist firm. When the firm moved to Burnley, the business thrived before moving to a mill on Curzon Street in 1887 until the 1980s when it was closed. The company manufactured medicines, beauty products and kitchen products, specifically baking powder

    Ghost sign with severe deterioration and no longer legible. However, based on entries in our collection, this sign previously read: 'Ansells' with their tagline 'the better beer'. This sign also advertised the location as an 'Off License'. According to several Kelly's Directories, 16 Cross Street listed several beer retailers here. In 1904, a Thomas Foxton, a Joseph Kew Whiting in 1932 and a Jasper R. McGorum in 1954. This off license likely competed with another beer retailer at 7 Cross Street. See Banks's ghost signs at this location in our collection. Ansell's Brewery was founded in 1857 by Joseph Ansell, becoming Joseph Ansell and Sons in 1889. By 1934 and after merging with Holt Brewery Co., Ansells became one of the largest UK regional breweries and adopted Holt's signature red squirrel emblem. In 1961, Ansell's merged with Tetley Walker and Ind Coope to form Allied Breweries, and in 1992, Carlsberg UK merged with Allied Breweries to become Carlsberg-Tetley

    This sign has severely deteriorated, but based on other entries in our collection, the sign previously read: 'Banks's Noted Ales'. A second layer has become visible underneath this top layer, revealing 'City Brewery Co.'s ...'. Kelly's Directory lists 3 separate beer retailers at this location (7 Cross Street): an Ernest Arthur Tarratt in 1922, a Lewis Elmore King in 1932 and a Sidney A. Freeston in 1954. Technically, this sign is painted on metal or wood rather than the brick required for a ghost sign. However, we have included this sign to compare the deterioration process with those found on ghost signs. Founded in 1875, Banks's began brewing in Wolverhampton and continues to do so today

In 2023, the sign was repainted, adding the words 'High Class' to describe the dairy and produce, but the original sign without 'High Class' is available to view in our collection. There was a second ghost sign underneath this sign, but the lettering was very difficult to read

    Ghost sign for 'School' on the corner of Rowsley Street and Evington Road. The 1908 Kelly’s Directory lists a Miss Helen Pratt, girls’ school on 1 Rowsley Street. The 1925 Kelly's lists Misses Lylie and Martha Grimley, girls’ school. By 1936, Miss Martha Grimley was listed as a music teacher at Rowsley House, and Miss Grimley was listed as a principal of Evington Road High School at 16 Evington Road, further confirmed in both the 1941 and 1951 Kelly's Directory

    Ghost sign for British Steam Specialties Ltd. (BSS) advertising 'valves, tubes, fittings and engineering accessories'. The words 'Barker Cundy Signs' can be seen in the bottom left-hand corner, indicating the painters of the sign. Between 2023 and 2024, the sign was repainted, but a new building was constructed partially obscuring the view of the sign. The British Steam Specialties (BSS) was founded in 1899 in the East Midlands and still owns the building. According to the British Metal Tubes and Fittings Association (BMFTA) in 2024, they are the UK's largest distributor of pipeline and heating solutions

    Ghost sign for 'Double Diamond', a pale ale brewed by Ind Coope Ltd. During the 1960s, Double Diamond received a lot of advertising hence the many ghost signs in our collection. This sign faces northwest, away from the sun, which has protected it from more rapid deterioration. Originally, Double Diamond was brewed by Allsopps in the 19th century until it came under the ownership of Ind Coope Ltd in 1934. In the 1950s, it was the UK's best-selling bottled beer and one of the most successful draught keg bitters of the 1960s and '70s

    Ghost sign for 'Squirrells' on Colton Street. Between 2003 and 2006, an expansion was added to the building, but the sign remains visible. According to the 1932 and 1954 Kelly's Directories, S.A. Squirrell & Co. Ltd. were boot and shoe manufacturers located on Colton Street. In the 1904 Kelly's Directory, the company is listed on 7 Campbell Street as boot manufacturers and leather factories with Ernest Squirrell living at the Craven House on 50 Princess Road and Samuel Asaph living at Lynton and London Road
