Uncovering Negotiation Through Translating Cultural Identity in Formal Documents: A Case Study of UNESCO Agreements

    No full text
This study investigates how Indonesian cultural identity has been constructed and negotiated through agreements with UNESCO and examines its influence on global awareness, cooperation, and collaboration. A descriptive-qualitative analysis was conducted on 414 pages of Indonesian–English contract texts available in UNESCO’s online repository, focusing on cultural-specific words and items classified according to Ahimsa-Putra and Rachman’s (2021) taxonomy and coded as either resistance or negotiation following Venuti and Eco. The analysis involved descriptive coding using definitions from the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia and the Oxford English Dictionary, Source–Target Relations (STR) analysis to identify shifts, thematic categorization of translation strategies, and interpretive analysis based on Derrida’s concepts of meaning shifts and différance. A conceptual framework was developed to ensure semantic alignment and control for potential confounders during validation of meaning connotation, with authoritative dictionaries used to validate the lexicon and cross-literature checks conducted to compare our dataset with established literature anchors. The findings indicate that direct equivalence translation is infrequent, with contrastive searches for equivalents often resulting in faithful representation in terms of meaning, identity, and culture, and that generative description reveals nuanced relationships between translation choices and the representation of cultural identity. Keywords: Cultural identity, Cultural references, Negotiation, Translation, UNESCO Agreement

Academic Burnout and the Quality of Students’ Thesis Proposal Background (A Correlational Study)

Academic burnout has become a growing concern in higher education, especially among students engaged in cognitively demanding tasks like thesis writing. This study examines the relationship between academic burnout and the quality of the “Background of the Study” section in undergraduate theses among English Education students at Universitas Islam Negeri Mataram. Using a quantitative correlational design, the research investigates whether burnout—measured in terms of exhaustion and disengagement—affects academic writing performance. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 31 final-year students who met specific inclusion criteria. The Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) measured burnout levels, while a rubric-based assessment evaluated writing quality. Due to non-normal data distribution, Spearman’s Rank Correlation was used for analysis. Results revealed a statistically significant negative correlation between exhaustion and writing quality, indicating that higher levels of exhaustion are associated with poorer academic writing. However, disengagement showed no significant relationship with writing quality. These findings suggest that exhaustion plays a more critical role in diminishing students’ cognitive performance during thesis writing. The study contributes to the existing literature on academic burnout and provides practical insights for educators, academic advisors, and institutions. Understanding how exhaustion impairs writing can support the development of targeted interventions, particularly in stress management and academic writing support, within faith-based higher education settings. Keywords: academic burnout, exhaustion, disengagement, thesis writing, writing qualit

Implementation of Love-Based Curriculum: An Islamic Education Perspective

    No full text
The phenomenon of moral degradation, empathy crisis, and educational orientation that overemphasizes cognitive aspects gives rise to the need for a new approach in curriculum development. This study aims to explore the implementation of a love-based curriculum from an Islamic educational perspective as an effort to present a humanistic, spiritual, and character-oriented learning process. The research method employed is library research, which involves examining the literature related to the Qur'an, Hadith, the thoughts of classical and contemporary Islamic educational figures, and modern academic theories. The results of the study indicate that a love-based curriculum integrates intellectual, emotional, and spiritual dimensions, with the main principles of rahmatan lil-'alamin (blessing for all the universe), compassion, etiquette, and ukhuwah (brotherhood) as its core. Its implementation can be seen in the planning of curriculum objectives, dialogic learning strategies, and evaluations that emphasize the affective and spiritual aspects. This research is significant because it offers an alternative paradigm for developing an Islamic education curriculum that is relevant to contemporary needs and grounded in divine values

Halal Digital Marketing Strategy to Increase Global Access for Sharia Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises

    No full text
The growth of the digital economy presents significant opportunities for Sharia Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to reach global markets through halal-compliant digital marketing strategies. However, challenges such as limited digital literacy, low halal certification rates, and the weak integration of Islamic ethical values with modern marketing practices remain critical barriers. This study aims to identify and synthesize effective halal digital marketing strategies that enhance global access for Sharia MSMEs while highlighting the role of local wisdom as a contextual strength. Using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, this research analyzed 30 indexed articles from reputable databases (ScienceDirect, Emerald, Taylor & Francis, ResearchGate, and SINTA) published between 2015–2025. The findings reveal that effective halal digital marketing strategies combine the integration of fiqh muamalah principles, halal branding and certification legitimacy, and digital empowerment through ethical use of e-commerce and social media. Moreover, local wisdom, such as community-based entrepreneurship, religious trust networks, and cultural authenticity, serves as a moderating factor that strengthens the sustainability and social acceptance of halal marketing initiatives. Mechanisms to overcome key challenges include targeted digital literacy training, government-backed halal certification support, and collaborative partnerships among MSMEs, academia, and Islamic financial institutions. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by offering an integrated model that bridges global halal marketing frameworks with localized cultural and ethical practices, providing a replicable reference for other regions. Future research should test the proposed model through mixed-method or experimental approaches to measure its effectiveness across diverse socio-economic and regional contexts

Normative Analysis of the Maqāṣid Al-Syarī‘ah Theory on Pre-Marital Women's Health Screening

    No full text
This study discusses the urgency of premarital health checks for women from the perspective of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah by emphasizing how the values of benefit can address contemporary issues related to women's reproductive health. One of the issues raised is whether premarital checks, which in some regions are beginning to be directed as administrative requirements, have the potential to marginalize women, especially if applied asymmetrically only to prospective brides. Thus, this study formulates two main questions: (1) how does maqāṣid al-sharīʿah view premarital health checks for women? and (2) can premarital checks be categorized as a hajj necessity or even elevated to darūriyyāt under certain conditions? This study uses a qualitative method with a normative nature through a literature study approach. Data were collected from fiqh literature, contemporary fatwas, national regulations, and reproductive health studies. They were then analyzed using the maqāṣid al-sharīʿah framework, which focuses on the five main objectives of Syarī‘ah, specifically the preservation of the soul and the preservation of the nasl. The results of the study indicate that premarital health checks, especially for women, are generally categorized as hajj because they aim to preserve the soul and prevent harm after marriage. However, under certain conditions, such as the potential for transmission of genetic diseases or infectious diseases, these examinations can be elevated to the category of darūriyyāt. The study also emphasizes that the obligation of premarital checks must be applied fairly and symmetrically to men and women to avoid bias or administrative marginalization. These findings contribute to strengthening policies at the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA), the development of gender-responsive national regulations, and the development of welfare-oriented family jurisprudence

Digital Zakat in Economic Empowerment and the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals: An Islamic Economic Law Perspective

    No full text
This study examines the role of digital zakat in promoting economic empowerment and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the lens of Islamic economic law. Adopting a normative legal approach and qualitative methodology, the research draws upon academic literature, national legal frameworks, and institutional practices of zakat management in Indonesia. The findings demonstrate that the digitalization of zakat via e-wallets, mobile banking, and online platforms significantly enhances the efficiency, transparency, and outreach of zakat collection and distribution. This transformation enables muzakki to fulfill their religious obligations in a timely, secure, and accessible manner. Furthermore, it facilitates faster disbursement of zakat funds into empowerment-driven social and economic programs aimed at poverty alleviation and sustainable community development. Despite these benefits, challenges persist. Key obstacles include limited digital literacy among both muzakki and mustahik, inadequate technological infrastructure in rural and remote areas, and the absence of specific regulatory guidelines governing digital zakat transactions. From a normative standpoint, it is essential that digital zakat practices adhere to the principles of maqashid shariah, justice (‘adl), trustworthiness (amanah), and accountability (mas’uliyyah), to ensure compliance with Islamic legal and ethical standards. In conclusion, digital zakat, when governed by sharia-compliant frameworks, serves as a powerful instrument of Islamic social finance. It can significantly contribute to inclusive economic growth, enhance access to education, and reduce inequality. Strengthening regulations, improving digital capacity, and fostering institutional collaboration are vital to unlocking its full potential
