The Assessment of Auditory Processing in Adults with Developmental Stuttering Based on Dichotic Listening Test.

Objective: The mechanism of developmental stuttering (stuttering) has been discussed in relation to the neurological auditory speech-language system. The dichotic listening test (DLT) has been employed to assess brain laterality and dominant ear. Recently, DLT has also been utilized to evaluate auditory processing and divided attention. This study aimed to examine the auditory processing ability of adults with developmental stuttering (ADS) based on the DLT. Methods: All participants were right-handed and had no hearing disorders. The ADS group comprised of eight men with very mild-to-mild stuttering and four men with moderate-to-severe stuttering. The control group consisted of 11 participants (seven men and four women). Participants were asked to simultaneously listen to three different digits with their separate left and right ear and write them down. Statistical tests were performed using analysis of variance in a two-factor mixed design, with stuttering severity and percentage of correct responses in the left and right ears as factors. Results: In the control group participants and among those with very mild-to-mild stuttering, the right ear was dominant. However, there were no significant differences in the percentage of correct responses between the left and right ears. Conversely, in the moderate-to-severe group, there was asymmetry in the percentage of correct responses between the left and right ears, with a significant decrease in correct answers in the left ear. Notably, two adults in the moderate-to-severe group exhibited pronounced right ear dominance. Conclusions: The two ADS participants with significant right ear dominance had previously reported hearing errors despite being able to hear sounds. These individuals experienced difficulty dividing auditory attention and are suspected to have auditory processing disorder. Auditory processing issues may overlap as stuttering severity increases.departmental bulletin pape

departmental bulletin pape

A Brief Summary of the Architectural Styles of the Ancient Andes: Focusing on Huarpa and Wari Cultures in the Ayacucho Valley during the Pre-Inca Period

departmental bulletin pape
