About the European History Which IsInvestigated through Sumptuary Laws

    Get PDF
History reveals that there are numerous examples in the world of laws for the repression of extravagance and luxury. They existed in ancient Greece and Rome. In Europe they were promulgated until the 18th century. We had them also in the Japanese Edo period. They are called sumptuary laws. If we analyse these laws we can get a detailed picture of the daily life of the common people of those times. Thus it will be possible to write a history of medieval and modern societies through the sumptuary laws. But first we must study thoroughly the contents, purposes and motives of these laws. Therefore in my introduction to this thesis I will outline the sumptuary laws first. However, bearing in mind the continuous changes these laws have undergone and the variations in the sumptuary laws of the different societies it is the intention to ignore the minor differences of the various laws down the ages and make an effort to get them in perspective.departmental bulletin pape

An Analysis of Data on Suspended Particulate Matter Concentrations on the Basis of Injunction against Exhaustion

Recently several lawsuits have been brought in against the exhaustion of suspended particulate matter (SPM). In January 2000, Kobe district court prohibited that daily averages of hourly SPM concentrations must not exceed the limit of 0.15 mg/㎥. In this paper, the daily averages were investigated on the basis of this limit at 253 monitoring stations for automobile exhaust gas in Japan from April 1997 to March 1998. As a result , daily averages exceeded the limit at 124 monitoring stations by the roadsides. In particular, at 11 monitoring stations daily averages exceeded the limit extremely.departmental bulletin pape

<Note> On a Problem of Dating in the Age of the Daien Calendar (AD 764-861)

    Get PDF
It is stated about the calendar of the Nara and Heian Period in this paper. At that time, a complicated calculation was needed to create a calendar, and details were secrets. Therefore, it was the work of the professional officials to create a calendar year by year. However, there is a problem of Shinsaku (進朔) in that calculation process. Shinsaku, as for the meaning, "advance Saku on the next day", is one of the artificial changes toward the result of the calculation. The word Saku (朔) means the solar-lunar conjunction. Sometimes there can be a day that Saku comes out late at night. If Shinsaku rule is applied, the day is decided to be handled as the last day of the former month. If it isn't applicable, the day is noted as the first day of the month. Whether Shinsaku rule is applied or not influences the dating. So it is the problem which can't be ignored when we learn history. But the actual condition of Shisaku rule isn't known well. I want to introduce some views about it.departmental bulletin pape
