Eugenol, a phenol-derived aromatic allylbenzene compound, exhibits a wide spectrum of biological activities (antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, analgesic, and antiseptic) and is an active ingredient in various hygiene products. It contains three reactive groups (hydroxy, allyl, and methoxy) and undergoes several reactions, including alkylation. The modification of the hydroxyl group of eugenol through alkylation has been performed using different alkylating agents. Alkylation has been carried out in various solvents (benzene, acetonitrile, methanol, and water) and at diverse temperatures. Hence, the investigation of this alkylation reaction on eugenol remains challenging. Correspondingly, the present study investigated the alkylation of eugenol by ethyl chloroacetate in polar aprotic solvents (N,N-dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, acetonitrile, and tetrahydrofuran) at temperatures ranging from 0°C to room temperature. The product, ethyl 2-(4-allyl-2-methoxyphenoxy)acetate (3), was obtained in yields of 91%, 51%, and 47% using DMF, DMSO, and CH3CN, respectively. The product's structure was confirmed by NMR, IR spectroscopy, and HRESIMS analysis

Bridging the gap: evaluating Indonesia’s national income and societal welfare through an Islamic economic perspective

    Get PDF
National income is a critical indicator of a country’s economic health, reflecting its capacity to generate income and distribute wealth. This study focuses on Indonesia, the largest economy in ASEAN, whose Gross National Income (GNI) ranks first in the region, yet its GDP per capita remains comparatively low. The study aims to assess how well Indonesia’s national income translates into societal welfare, emphasizing income inequality. Using national data from credible sources such as the World Bank and Indonesian Statistics Bureau, the research employs a macroeconomic framework and Keynesian consumption model to evaluate the distribution of wealth. The findings reveal a substantial gap between Indonesia’s high national income and its uneven income distribution, evidenced by a rising Gini Index. The research explores Islamic economic principles, particularly the concept of maqāṣid sharīah, to propose a fairer income distribution model that could enhance societal welfare. The study’s implications suggest that incorporating Islamic fiscal tools such as zakat could bridge economic disparities, fostering equitable and sustainable development in Indonesia.

    Get PDF
This study examines the impact of work-life balance, superior pressure, and cyberloafing on employee productivity, with a particular focus on the moderating role of the Islamic work ethic. The increasing emphasis on human resources and their effective management in today’s competitive business environment highlights the need to explore these factors in detail. Using a quantitative approach, primary data were collected from 334 employees of PT. Garment in Indonesia. The analysis employed a T-test and moderated regression analysis to assess the influence of these variables on productivity. Results indicate that work-life balance positively affects productivity, while superior pressure negatively impacts it. Interestingly, cyberloafing showed a positive effect, suggesting it may serve as a mental break, enhancing focus and creativity. Islamic work ethic positively correlates with productivity but does not moderate the relationships between work-life balance, superior pressure, and cyberloafing. These findings contribute to the understanding of human resources dynamics within Islamic cultural frameworks and provide insights into improving workplace productivity

    Get PDF
Purpose - The purpose of this study was to examine how Shari'ah-compliant finance can be a solution in financing BRI projects and mitigating debt risk.Method - The study uses a systematic literature review.  Result - The finding shows that Shari'ah-compliant finance can provide a solution to the debt trap associated with the conventional model proposed by the Chinese government. By using BOT, the structure can facilitate financing, especially in developing countries with no technical skills as well as experience in operating massive projects. This structure offers financing of the project as well as helps in skills transfer to the local during the operating stage. Another structure is Istisna’s lease Finance, this structure focuses on financing the specific project identified by the country. This structure offers the country the ability to develop the project, lease the project, and pay back a specific amount in instalments. Despite the conventional finance where the payment contains interest, in this contract the payment is specified and cannot be changed due to interest.Implication - The study uses shari'ah-compliant financing mechanisms for belt and road initiative to mitigating debt trap risks.Originality - BRI projects are crucial for the development of the countries. The Chinese government established BRI to try to connect Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa through massive infrastructure such as roads, railways, ports, and airports. However, there is a challenge in financing these projects.  Sharia-compliant Financing Mechanisms to mitigating debt trap risks

Asymmetric impact of stokvel and banking sector efficiency in South Africa: Evidence from non-linear ARDL approach

    Get PDF
This study examines the impact of stokvel savings and banking sector efficiency in South Africa using the non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) bound testing approach technique with economic time series data ranging from 2009Q4 to 2020Q2. The NARDL results shows that positive and negative shocks on banking sector efficiency exhibited a positive influence on stokvel savings. An improvement in banking sector efficiency would result in an increase in stokvel savings of approximately 0.33%, while a decline in banking sector efficiency would lead to increase in stokvel savings albeit at a marginally reduced level of approximately 32%. The results are statistically significant at 1% and 5% for a positive shock and a negative shock respectively.  Insignificant results obtained when using gross domestic product growth as dependent variable. This implies that the N-ARDL is not an appropriate model for estimating GDPG. Statistically significant results were found at 5% when using money supply

Competing Global and Local Halal Standards: Indonesia's Strategy in Increasing Halal Food Exports After Ratifying SMIIC

    No full text
This study examines the obstacles and strategies for Indonesia in harmonizing the global halal standards of SMIIC (The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries) to enhance halal food exports to OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) member countries. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observations, interviews with halal stakeholders, and documentation. The findings reveal several barriers to harmonization, including the voluntary nature of SMIIC standards, the fact that approximately 35% of OIC countries have not joined SMIIC, and differences in Islamic schools of thought among member countries. Additional challenges include internal constraints, such as the classification of many OIC countries as Least Developed Countries (LDCs), the dominance of halal food suppliers from non-Muslim countries, and market protection policies. To address these challenges, Indonesia has adopted a localization strategy by establishing Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRAs) with foreign halal certification bodies. By the end of 2024, Indonesia aims to achieve 92 MRAs, which act as a "middle ground" between global and local halal standards and have proven effective in increasing halal food exports to OIC member countries. The implications of this study highlight MRAs as a viable policy model for balancing local and global interests while strengthening Indonesia's economic ties with Muslim nations. This strategy demonstrates that standard localization within a global framework offers a pragmatic solution to the challenges of halal harmonization, thereby reinforcing Indonesia's role in the international halal market
