Empirical Insights into Capacity Building and Quality Assurance in Ethiopian Higher Education

    Get PDF
This study investigates the policy dynamics and institutional mechanisms guiding capacity building in Ethiopia’s higher education within the framework of internationalisation and quality assurance. Drawing on a qualitative document review approach, the research analysed government policies, institutional strategies, and accreditation reports to assess how national directives align with global trends in higher education reform. The findings indicate that Ethiopian education policy increasingly incorporates internationalisation goals, such as academic mobility, collaborative research, curriculum benchmarking, and global quality standards. Strategic plans also highlight the importance of institutional autonomy and contextual relevance in Islamic education delivery. Despite this, the study reveals persistent challenges, including inadequate financial support, coordination gaps between agencies, and limited institutional readiness—especially among faith-based universities. Empirical evidence, including national audit reports and academic performance records, points to modest growth in faculty qualifications and research output in recent years, although progress varies across institutions. Thematic analysis suggests that while policy aspirations are clear, the operationalisation of these ambitions remains uneven and highly dependent on external funding and technical assistance. Moreover, the regulatory environment lacks specificity in addressing the dual demands of religious identity and global competitiveness. This paper contributes to ongoing debates on harmonising Islamic education with international academic standards in the Global South. It offers policy-level recommendations to strengthen institutional governance, resource mobilisation, and inter-agency collaboration. Ultimately, the study encourages rethinking capacity building not only as institutional enhancement but also as a culturally grounded and globally oriented transformation process in higher education systems

Judicial Invalidation of Ithbāt Nikāḥ Underage in the View of Religious Court Judges in Madura

    Get PDF
Underage ithbāt nikāḥ creates a legal loophole in Indonesia's Islamic marriage system. Child marriages that should require a dispensation are often legalized through ithbāt nikāḥ without such approval. This practice is prevalent in the Religious Courts of Madura, where most judges tend to grant petitions despite recognizing its contradiction with efforts to prevent child marriage. This study adopts a juridical-sociological approach through case analysis and in-depth interviews with judges. The findings show that rejection of underage ithbāt nikāḥ is rare, as judges prioritize protecting children's civil rights, such as birth certificates and legal family status. However, this generates a dilemma: granting applications risks legitimizing child marriage, while rejecting them may be seen as denying legal certainty for the community. As a middle path, some judges suggest alternatives, including recognition of children born out of wedlock, determination of child origin, and civil registration without marriage certificates. The study highlights the urgent need for clear legal guidelines to prevent misuse of ithbāt nikāḥ while ensuring child protection

Comparative Analysis of Roman-Persian Political and Economic Periods with Contemporary in Islamic Perspectives

    Get PDF
This study investigates the comparative dynamics of economic politics during the Roman-Persian period and the contemporary era through the lens of Islamic economic principles. It explores key dimensions such as resource management, wealth distribution, and the societal impact of policy, particularly in relation to social inequality, resource exploitation, and moral degradation. Employing a qualitative methodology based on an extensive literature review of secondary sources, this research reveals that while the Roman-Persian political economy succeeded in maintaining imperial stability, it also perpetuated significant social disparities through excessive taxation and territorial exploitation. In contrast, the modern economic paradigm, driven by technological innovation and global integration, remains susceptible to systemic crises and widening inequities. The findings suggest that core Islamic tenets—namely zakat, the prohibition of usury (riba), and equitable wealth distribution—offer a normative framework for constructing a more just and resilient economic order, both historically and in contemporary contexts

The epidermal structure and phytochemical composition of six palm species (Arecaceae) were studied to understand their anatomical characteristics and bioactive compound content. Leaf samples from phoenix palm (Phoenix roebelenii), red palm (Cyrtostachys renda), foxtail palm (Wodyetia bifurcata), fan palm (Livistona chinensis), christmas palm (Adonidia merrillii), and yellow palm (Chrysalldocarpus lutescens) were analyzed through microscopic observation and phytochemical screening. The results revealed variations in epidermal cell shape, cell wall structure, and stomatal distribution. Most species exhibited smooth-walled epidermal cells, except for red palm (C. renda), which had wavy cell walls. Stomata were predominantly tetracytic, with red palm (C. renda) and christmas palm (A. merrillii) displaying an amphistomatic distribution, while the other species were hypostomatic. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids and saponins in all samples. Triterpenoids were detected only in phoenix palm (P. roebelenii), fan palm (L. chinensis), and yellow palm (C. lutescens). Alkaloids were found in phoenix palm (P. roebelenii) and red palm (C. renda), while steroids were present in red palm (C. renda), foxtail palm (W. bifurcata), and christmas palm (A. merrillii). Additionally, tannins were detected in all plant samples except for fan palm (L. chinensis). These findings suggest that palm leaves possess significant bioactive compounds that could be explored for pharmaceutical and industrial applications

Combining plant extracts at lower doses may enhance antioxidant effects through synergy. This study investigated the antioxidant capacity of combined Mangifera indica and Euphorbia hirta leaf extracts using metal ion-reducing power assays. The extracts were prepared via maceration with 70% ethanol. Phytochemical profiling was conducted through preliminary screening tests. Antioxidant capacity was assessed spectrophotometrically using the phosphomolybdenum and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The phosphomolybdenum assay involved incubation of the extracts with reagent at 95°C for 90 minutes, while the FRAP assay was conducted at 37°C for 15 minutes. Extract combinations were prepared in the ratios of 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids, steroids, and terpenoids in both extracts. In the phosphomolybdenum assay, the Mo(VI) reducing power of M. indica extract (29.154±0.664 mg AAE/g extract) was higher than that of E. hirta (27.948±0.667 mg AAE/g extract). Similarly, in the FRAP assay, the ferric reducing power of M. indica extract (55.304±1.284 mg AAE/g extract) exceeded that of E. hirta (48.009±1.873 mg AAE/g extract). The highest reducing powers were observed in Comb. 3, yielding 30.745±0.715 mg AAE/g extract (phosphomolybdenum) and 57.190±1.431 mg AAE/g extract (FRAP). Among the three combinations tested, only the 3:1 ratio demonstrated a synergistic antioxidant effect in both assays

    Get PDF
This research aims to  explores the impact of religious-centric product strategy, operational sustainability, and product quality on business performance in the Muslim fashion industry in Central Java. Using a quantitative approach with SEM PLS analysis, data was collected from 285 Muslim fashion outlets. The study aimed to test four hypotheses and two mediation tests to understand the relationships among the constructs. The results indicate that religious-centric product strategy positively influences operational sustainability and product quality, which in turn significantly affects business performance. Furthermore, operational sustainability and product quality were found to have significant mediation effects on the relationship between religious-centric product strategy and business performance. However, one hypothesis—regarding the direct relationship between religious-centric product strategy and business performance—was found to be non-significant. This suggests that while religious-centric strategies are crucial for enhancing operational sustainability and product quality, their direct effect on business performance is less pronounced. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of integrating religious values into business strategies for improving sustainability and quality, which, in turn, drive business performance in the Muslim fashion sector. This study contributes to the understanding of how religious-based strategies can influence business outcomes and provides practical implications for businesses aiming to enhance their competitiveness in the market. Keywords: Business Performance, Religious Centric Product Strategies, Organizational Sustainability, Maqashid Syaria
