The Networks of Faith and Politics: Exploring Santri Electoral Behavior in Central Java Elections 2024

    No full text
The presence of Islamic boarding school students (santri) in Indonesia’s political history holds substantial significance, not merely due to their growing demographic weight but also because of their strategic influence and pivotal roles in the last three national elections. Santri function not only as active voters but also as critical components of electoral coalitions and, in some cases, as candidates themselves. This study employs a quantitative research design utilizing a multistage random sampling technique, with a margin of error of 3.1%, a 95% confidence level, and an assumed population variance of 50:50, resulting in a sample size of 1,076 respondents. Data were collected through structured face-to-face interviews conducted during the 2024 general elections in Central Java. Participants comprised individuals who had attended and resided in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). Findings indicate that family members and religious leaders exert a strong influence on santri's political engagement. A majority of santri report still relying on family networks and religious authorities as primary reference points when selecting their preferred candidates. Furthermore, the majority of santri are affiliated with the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) organization, which remains a dominant institutional force within Indonesia’s Muslim community. However, the alignment between santri and formal political parties, especially Islamic political parties,  remains relatively fluid, with only a minority holding formal party membership or sustained political affiliations. This suggests that while religious identity shapes political values, party loyalty among santri is neither uniform nor necessarily strong

    Get PDF
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by uncontrolled blood sugar levels and is diagnosed using fasting blood glucose (FBG) measurements. Risk factors for T2DM include central obesity, measured by the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and poor sleep quality. This study aimed to determine the relationship between WHR and sleep quality with FBG levels in T2DM patients, by employing an observational study with a cross-sectional design A total of 51 respondents aged 45–75 years were selected using purposive sampling. Waist and hip circumference were measured with a metline; sleep quality was assessed using a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, and FBG levels were obtained from secondary data in the form of medical records at the Karangmalang Community Health Center. Spearman was used for the bivariate test, while the multiple linear regression was used for the multivariate test. The test results showed a significant relationship between WHR and FBG levels (p=0.001, r=0.460), and between sleep quality with FBG levels (p<0.001, r=0.553). Multivariate results obtained p=0.026 for sleep quality and p=0.093 for WHR, suggesting sleep quality is more strongly associated with FBG levels. Sleep quality was the dominant factor associated with FBG levels in T2DM patients. The results of this study can be used as a guideline for individuals with T2DM to maintain normal blood glucose levels and good sleep quality for better blood glucose control

The Effectiveness of Spirulina in Restoring Body Weight in Anemia-Induced Female Wistar Rats

    Get PDF
One of the most prevalent health problems in Indonesia is anemia, particularly among adolescent girls, where concerns about excessive weight gain may reduce adherence to iron supplementation. Spirulina is a potential alternative supplement rich in iron and nutrients that support hematopoiesis and may address these concerns. This study aimed to analyze the effect of spirulina supplementation on body weight in anemic adolescent female Wistar rats. This experimental study used 25 female Wistar rats divided into five groups: normal control (NC) received a standard BR diet, positive control (PC) received a low-iron diet to induce anemia, and three treatment groups received spirulina at doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg body weight (T1–T3) for 21 days. Body weight was measured before anemia induction, after anemia induction, and following supplementation. The results showed a significant overall difference in body weight gain among the groups (p < 0.001), which was mainly driven by differences between the normal control and positive control groups. However, post hoc analysis indicated no significant differences in body weight gain between the positive control group and treatment groups 1, 2, and 3 (p > 0.05). Body weight in the treatment groups increased by 22.8–27 g, indicating recovery toward baseline values. Although these differences were not statistically significant, spirulina supplementation may contribute to anemia recovery, as reflected by improvements in body weight. In conclusion, spirulina shows potential as a nutritional supplementation strategy that does not induce excessive weight gain while supporting iron-related nutritional needs
