    An Analysis of Procedural and Conceptual Knowledge in Genetic Engineering Topic among STEM Students: Basis for Instructional Material Development

    The objective of this study is to examine the levels of procedural and conceptual knowledge in genetic engineering topics among STEM students to provide baseline in developing effective instructional materials. Topics such as introduction to Genetic engineering, Gene Cloning, and DNA extraction were utilized to determine levels of students’types of knowledge, procedural and Conceptual. A descriptive quantitative research approach using 12-item test is used to analyze and assess both procedural and conceptual knowledge using a 5-point Likert scale was used to measure students’ understanding.  A total of 12 STEM students from Concepcion National High School took part in the study during the 2023-2024 academic year. The findings of the study revealed that students demonstrated higher levels of proficiency in procedural knowledge compared to conceptual knowledge across the three topics: genetic engineering, gene cloning, and DNA extraction. There appears to be a range of understanding levels when it comes to procedural knowledge, as indicated by the higher variability. On the other hand, the lower variability in DNA extraction suggests a more consistent level of comprehension. The study's small sample size limited the use of inferential statistical methods, highlighting the importance of finding more effective teaching methods to improve students' comprehension of genetic engineering concepts. Qualitative data uncovered notable obstacles, including a dearth of interactive experiences and materials, underscoring the importance of active involvement and sufficient resources. Suggestions involve improving laboratory sessions, ensuring the availability of required materials, and implementing interactive teaching techniques to enhance students' understanding of genetic engineering. This study highlights the significance of well-rounded educational interventions to enhance both theoretical and practical knowledge in genetic engineering

    Dynamics of the Neo-MABIMS Criteria in Determining the Beginning of the Hijri Month in Indonesia (1443–1446 H)

    This study explores the ongoing variations in determining the beginning of the Hijri month in Indonesia, despite the official adoption of the Neo-MABIMS criteria by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research outlines and deductively analyzes data related to formulating and implementing these criteria. The findings reveal two key points: first, discrepancies persist in determining the beginning of the Hijri month. Since implementing the Neo-MABIMS criteria up to Jumada al-Awwal 1446 H, two months, Jumada al-Akhirah 1445 H, and Muharram 1446 H, have produced different outcomes. Second, even when identical criteria are applied, differences in methodological approaches may lead to either divergent or convergent results. This study recommends future research involving expert interviews to strengthen analytical depth and include updated observational data on Hijri month determination to enhance the comprehensiveness and accuracy of the findings

    Verification of Hilāl Image Using AI-Based Web Tool in Aceh Jaya

    The determination of Hijri month beginnings is frequently disputed, particularly due to the subjective nature of the ru’yah (visual sighting) method, which is affected by observer bias and atmospheric variability. This study addresses a contested hilāl sighting in Aceh Jaya for Zulhijjah 1, 1446, where a photograph led to uncertainty in official determination. To mitigate misinterpretation, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based public website utilizing Google’s Teachable Machine was developed and tested. Descriptive analysis was conducted on two disputed photographic samples from the event. The AI model, trained for crescent (hilāl) image classification, consistently identified both samples as non-hilāl with a confidence exceeding 97%. The findings indicate the images were likely artifacts or noise rather than genuine crescent sightings. The research demonstrates that AI platforms provide reliable, objective support in hilāl verification, enhancing the standardization and credibility of Hijri calendar determinations for religious and scientific authorities

    The Reformation of Islamic Thought by Muhammad Abduh and Al-Afghani: Its Implications for Contemporary Da’wah Management

    In the nineteenth century, the Muslim ummah faced an intellectual decline exacerbated by colonial domination, creating an urgent need for renewal. This study examines the thoughts of Muhammad Abduh and Jamaluddin al-Afghani through a qualitative library-based approach. The research was conducted in several stages, including data collection from documents related to the thinkers’ ideas, data reduction, analysis, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that both figures emphasized rational thought, educational reform, and social awareness. Al-Afghani promoted political mobilization and Muslim solidarity, while Abduh focused on rational theological discourse and institutional educational reform. Their ideas provide a crucial foundation for contemporary da’wah management, and combining al-Afghani’s activist vision with Abduh’s rational reformism can create an organized, adaptive, and effective da’wah strategy that responds to both social and spiritual challenges in modern society

    Pesantren Technology-Friendly: Enhancing Learning Effectiveness in The Modern Era

    This research explores the integration of technology in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and its influence on learning effectiveness in the modern era through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) combined with content analysis, examining data from accredited academic journals. The findings indicate that technology enhances pesantren learning through innovations such as e-learning platforms, digitization of kitab kuning (classical Islamic texts), modern administrative tools, and expanded da’wah outreach while facilitating collaborations with external institutions to strengthen infrastructure. However, challenges such as limited technological resources, low digital literacy, and concerns about the negative impacts of technology on students’ character persist. To address these issues, pesantren adopt strategies including digital literacy training, collaboration with external partners, the establishment of internal regulations, and a moderated approach to technology use, ensuring technological advancements align with Islamic values. This study contributes by providing a framework for balancing tradition and modernity, offering practical insights for policymakers and educators to optimize technology use in pesantren, empowering students to thrive in a globalized and interconnected world while preserving their cultural and religious essence

    Islamic Gratitude Psychoeducational Group Model to Increase Student Resilience

    One aspect of university quality assurance is providing guidance and counseling services for students. Students are vulnerable to various problems while undergoing education in higher education. Resilience is one of the characters that is important for students to be able to survive and recover from various difficult situations and problems experienced. To increase resilience, appropriate treatment is needed along with a model as a reference. This study aims to develop a psychoeducational group service model based on Islamic Gratitude to improve student resilience. The research method uses Borg and Gall developmental research until the expert and practitioner validation stage and produces a prototype. The results of the research are the Islamic Gratitude Psychoeducational Group Model to Increase Student Resilience which integrates the stages of gratitude intervention developed by Bohlmajer and the values of gratitude in Islam which include syukr bil qalb, syukr bil lisan, and syukr bil hal, and contains the values of Iman, Islam, and Ihsan. Expert validation of the model shows that the model is feasible and can be used. Further research can conduct small group tests/experimental tests to measure the effectiveness of the developed mode

    Volunteer management and institutional performance: Developing amil competencies for enhanced effectiveness in Islamic social finance organizations

    Purpose - The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of Amil volunteers in the collection and distribution of ZIS funds, and to reveal the differences in position between Amil volunteers and Amil Method – This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. Primary data were obtained through focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews involving 15 Amil volunteers at LAZISNU Semarang City, while secondary data were obtained from several sources, both from journal articles, official websites of zakat; infaq; and shadaqah management institutions, ministry of religion websites, and online news that have relevance to the research theme. Result  –  The results showed that the potential of Amil volunteers in collecting and distributing ZIS funds is minimal. There are more Amil volunteers than Amil, but they lack adequate skills. In addition, there is a gap between Amil and Amil volunteers. The gap can be observed in the recognition, the knowledge of ZIS materials, or the capacity to manage ZIS Implication – The results of this study are expected to contribute to increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of ZIS human resource management, especially for ZIS volunteers Originality/Value – This research is the first study explaining ZIS volunteers, so it has high originality. Originality is seen in the primary focus of the study, human resources in Islamic organizations, which are not widely highlighted in research studies. *** Tujuan - Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkaji kemampuan relawan Amil dalam pengumpulan dan pendistribusian dana ZIS, serta mengidentifikasi perbedaan peran antara relawan Amil dan Amil Metode – Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Data primer diperoleh melalui diskusi kelompok terfokus (FGD) dan wawancara mendalam dengan 15 relawan Amil di LAZISNU Kota Semarang, sementara data sekunder diperoleh dari berbagai sumber, termasuk artikel jurnal, situs web resmi lembaga pengelolaan zakat, infaq, dan shadaqah, situs web Kementerian Agama, serta berita online yang relevan dengan tema penelitian. Hasil – Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa potensi relawan Amil dalam mengumpulkan dan mendistribusikan dana ZIS sangat minim. Jumlah relawan Amil lebih banyak daripada Amil, namun mereka kurang memiliki keterampilan yang memadai. Selain itu, terdapat kesenjangan antara Amil dan relawan Amil. Kesenjangan tersebut dapat diamati dalam hal pengakuan, pengetahuan tentang materi ZIS, atau kemampuan mengelola ZIS Implikasi – Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat berkontribusi pada peningkatan efektivitas dan efisiensi manajemen sumber daya manusia ZIS, terutama untuk relawan ZIS. Orisinalitas/Nilai – Penelitian ini merupakan studi pertama yang menjelaskan relawan ZIS, sehingga memiliki keaslian yang tinggi. Keaslian terlihat pada fokus utama penelitian, yaitu sumber daya manusia dalam organisasi Islam, yang belum banyak ditekankan dalam penelitian-penelitian sebelumnya.

    Constructing self-esteem: Authoritative da’wah material in Syi’ir Ngudi Susilo by Bisri Mustofa

    Purpose – The purpose of this study is to analyze how Syi'ir Ngudi Susilo by Bisri Mustofa constructs and conveys the concept of self-esteem as an authoritative da’wah material Method – This study used a qualitative method with a semiotic analysis approach. The data collection techniques included reading and note-taking. The data analysis methods used the Agih Method and the Match Method. Result – The results showed that the construction of self-esteem in the Syi’ir Ngudi Susilo is achieved by identifying elements related to self-esteem in the Syi’ir. These elements include self-knowledge, self and others, self-acceptance, self-reliance, self-expression, self-confidence, and self-awareness. These elements align with the concept of self-esteem development, which includes the practices of living consciously, self-acceptance, self-responsibility, self-assertiveness, living purposefully, and personal integrity. Ngudi Susilo communicates authoritative da'wah material effectively in an aesthetic, emotional, and easy-to-understand manner. Implication – The study has several significant implications in the fields of Islamic preaching (da’wah), education, psychology, and cultural studies. These implications highlight the broader impact of syi'ir in shaping religious understanding, promoting self-esteem, and preserving traditional Islamic literary forms Originality/Value – This study is the first study that breaks new ground by using Saussure’s semiotic framework to examine how syi'ir constructs self-esteem and serves as an authoritative da'wah material. The syi'ir is not only just a religious or artistic form but also a therapeutic tool for personal and social development. *** Tujuan – Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis bagaimana Syi'ir Ngudi Susilo karya Bisri Mustofa membangun dan menyampaikan konsep harga diri sebagai bahan dakwah yang otoritatif.  Metode – Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan analisis semiotik. Teknik pengumpulan data meliputi pembacaan dan pencatatan. Metode analisis data yang digunakan adalah Metode Agih dan Metode Match. Hasil – Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembentukan harga diri dalam Syi’ir Ngudi Susilo dicapai dengan mengidentifikasi unsur-unsur yang berkaitan dengan harga diri dalam Syi’ir. Unsur-unsur tersebut meliputi pengetahuan diri, hubungan diri dengan orang lain, penerimaan diri, kemandirian, ekspresi diri, kepercayaan diri, dan kesadaran diri. Elemen-elemen ini sejalan dengan konsep pengembangan harga diri, yang mencakup praktik hidup secara sadar, penerimaan diri, tanggung jawab diri, keberanian diri, hidup dengan tujuan, dan integritas pribadi. Ngudi Susilo menyampaikan materi dakwah secara efektif dengan cara yang estetis, emosional, dan mudah dipahami. Implikasi – Studi ini memiliki beberapa implikasi signifikan di bidang dakwah Islam, pendidikan, psikologi, dan studi budaya. Implikasi ini menyoroti dampak yang lebih luas dari syi'ir dalam membentuk pemahaman agama, mempromosikan harga diri, dan melestarikan bentuk sastra Islam tradisional. Orisinalitas/Nilai – Studi ini merupakan studi pertama yang membuka jalan baru dengan menggunakan kerangka semiotik Saussure untuk menganalisis bagaimana syi'ir membangun harga diri dan berfungsi sebagai materi da'wah yang otoritatif. Syi'ir tidak hanya sekadar bentuk keagamaan atau seni, tetapi juga alat terapeutik untuk pengembangan pribadi dan sosial.

    Economic Vulnerability and Operational Efficiency in Indonesia’s Islamic Banking: A Vector Error-Correction Approach

    Amid Indonesia’s fast-growing Sharia-compliant finance sector and heightened global volatility, a clear assessment of how systemic shocks affect bank performance is increasingly urgent. This research analyzes economic vulnerability and its implications for the efficiency of Islamic banking in Indonesia. Using monthly time-series data from 2007 to 2024, it employs a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). The findings reveal that both disbursed financing (FIN) and non-performing financing (NPF) significantly influence operational efficiency—measured by the BOPO ratio—in both the short and long run. Specifically, higher levels of FIN and NPF diminish efficiency by raising operational costs or reducing income. By contrast, the crisis indicator (CRS) gains significance only in the long run, implying that Islamic banks require time to adjust to macroeconomic shocks. Impulse-Response Function analysis shows mixed efficiency reactions to macroeconomic shocks, while Forecast Error Variance Decomposition highlights BOPO’s own shocks as the largest source of its variance and underscores NPF as the most powerful exogenous driver. These insights equip Islamic-bank managers and policymakers to craft strategies that mitigate economic vulnerability and enhance operational performance

    Abstract: The global environmental crisis intensifying in our era highlights the need for new conceptual approaches to address this existential issue. This study examines the relationship between environmental ethics and Sufism, based on systemic values inherent in Holmes Roston III and the Sufistic concept of self-purification. This qualitative research employs document analysis, focusing on al-Qushayrī's Subtle Allusions and Holmes Rolston III's Environmental Ethics, analyzed through a comparative framework and supported by secondary data. The study investigates the Sufistic concepts of ascetism, fear of God, and contentment alongside the systemic values of environmental ethics. It proposes the integrative concepts of prevent-repair, care-guard, and conviction-kindness as key outcomes. These findings underscore the importance of environmental ethics, personal spirituality, and intrinsic awareness, providing both theoretical and practical insights. Contribution: Theoretically, this study advances the integration of Sufism and environmental ethics through combining Sufistic values (internal) with systemic values (external). It provides a framework for cultivating a balanced attitude and a conscious relationship with God, humans, and nature, grounded in Qur’anic principles and ecological awareness
