Tariq Ramadan's Concept of Tolerance and the Muslim Identity Crisis: An Islamic Psychological Perspective

    Get PDF
This article examines the concept of tolerance in Tariq Ramadan's thought as a solution to the identity crisis faced by contemporary Muslims, making Ramadan's tolerance the primary unit of analysis. This research aims to examine how the construction of tolerance offered by Ramadan—which is rooted in Islamic spirituality, dialogue ethics, and psychological awareness—can serve as a framework for restoring the Muslim identity amidst the dynamics of globalization, plurality, and modern cultural pressures. Utilizing library research methods with a qualitative, descriptive, and analytical approach, as well as content analysis, this study examines primary works by Ramadan, along with relevant secondary literature on tolerance, Muslim identity, and Islamic psychology. The study's findings reveal that Ramadan rejects the model of passive tolerance based on power relations and proposes an alternative model of active tolerance, grounded in tawhid, the recognition of God's will in diversity, and the integration of qalb, reason, and social ethics. An analysis of Islamic psychology reveals that tolerance within the framework of Ramadan has a spiritual dimension that can help overcome the crises of meaning, alienation, and identity polarization. The contribution of this research lies in presenting a conceptual model of tolerance with Islamic psychological nuances that can serve as the basis for strengthening Muslim identity, as well as the development of educational, counseling, and intergroup dialogue practices in multicultural societies

Social Construction of Body Positivity Movement on Instagram among Teenage Girls in Surabaya, Indonesia

    Get PDF
Body image on digital platforms, particularly Instagram, has become a significant arena for negotiating and redefining ideals of beauty, self-esteem, and identity, reflecting broader social shifts. This research examines the social construction of the body positivity movement on Instagram among teenage girls in Surabaya through Peter L. Berger’s theoretical framework, which posits that social reality is formed through externalization, objectivation, and internalization, where individuals and society co-create meanings through interaction. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, this study involved 12 female informants aged 13-21 who actively use Instagram. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and visual content analysis, and were then analyzed thematically to identify patterns in body image narratives, self-acceptance, and digital resistance. Findings reveal that these young women are not passive recipients of beauty norms; instead, they actively reconstruct bodily meanings through their everyday media practices. The body positivity movement emerges as a counter-narrative that transforms collective identity and redefines women’s bodies from objects to dignified subjects. This research contributes to media and body sociology, emphasizing critical digital literacy and inclusive education in fostering youth empowerment and gender-sensitive interventions

    Get PDF
This study investigates the Ottoman Empire’s substantial contribution to Acehnese development during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, emphasizing how strategic alliances, military expertise, and technological transfers enabled Aceh to resist Portuguese expansion and establish itself as a leading maritime power in Southeast Asia. Utilizing correspondence and historical records from both Acehnese and Ottoman sources, the research identifies key areas of collaboration, including the establishment of military academies, weapons production, and warship construction. In addition to military cooperation, the study underscores the Ottoman Empire’s influence on Aceh’s intellectual and governmental spheres through the involvement of Ottoman-trained scholars in the Aceh Sultanate, the adoption of administrative practices, and the enhancement of Aceh’s political legitimacy as an Islamic sultanate. Employing a historical–analytical methodology, the study draws on primary sources such as De Hikajat Atjeh, Adat Aceh, Hikayat Meukuta Alam, Ottoman imperial archives, and European travel narratives. The findings demonstrate that the Ottoman Empire played a significant role in transforming Aceh into a prominent military and intellectual center. This partnership consolidated Aceh’s maritime supremacy, reinforced its governmental structures, and protected its sovereignty. The Ottoman–Aceh alliance exemplifies broader patterns of cross-cultural exchange within the Islamic world and highlights the geopolitical significance of such strategic relationships

The Role of Social-Community Networks in Realizing Inclusive Education in Sekolah Alam

    Get PDF
Inclusive education requires the active involvement of all social elements in creating a learning environment that adapts to the needs of all students, including children with special needs (ABK). Sekolah Alam, as an alternative education model based on nature and contextual learning, provides a strategic space for building strong social-community networks. This study aims to analyze the role of social-community networks involving parents, the community, and school administrators in supporting inclusive education practices within the Sekolah Alam environment. The research employed a qualitative method with a multi-case study design, conducted in two locations: Sekolah Alam Indonesia and Sekolah Alam Lampung. Data were collected through observation, unstructured interviews, and focus group discussions (FGDs) with school and community stakeholders. The results of this study show a shared understanding among parents, the community, and schools regarding the importance of collaboration in supporting inclusive education in Sekolah Alam. Parental participation is evident in providing facilities, engaging in academic activities, aligning educational visions, and offering financial support. The collaboration patterns in each school reflect contextual approaches based on regional characteristics: Sekolah Alam Indonesia focuses on fostering independence among children with special needs and strengthening moral values, while Sekolah Alam Lampung emphasizes developing children’s talents through an ecology-based approach. These findings enrich academic discourse on the synergy between alternative and inclusive education, while also providing empirical foundations for policymakers to strengthen the role of community networks in promoting an equitable and adaptive education system that meets the diverse needs of all learners

    Get PDF
Purpose – This study formulates a strategic framework for religious counselors in producing creative and effective da’wah content on social media. It responds to the urgent need for transitioning from conventional sermon-based communication to multiplatform strategies that align with digital audience behavior and algorithmic engagement. Method – An exploratory, qualitative design was employed, utilizing van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The dataset comprises 50 short videos purposively collected from TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels (January–June 2025), selected based on their thematic relevance and audience engagement (more than 10,000 views or 100 likes). Each video was examined at macro (theme), mezzo (narrative), and micro (language) levels to identify meaning construction and ideological framing. Result – The findings reveal that audience engagement in digital da'wah is primarily driven by brevity, emotional proximity, and contextual themes rather than clerical authority. Religious messages that employ informal storytelling, humor, and local language tend to achieve a stronger connection with the audience. These dynamics reflect a transformation of religious authority from institutional to participatory and algorithmic forms. Implication – The study provides a practical model for religious counselors to enhance digital literacy, narrative creativity, and ethical awareness in content production. It encourages the institutionalization of digital training within religious outreach programs under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Originality/Value – This research fills a conceptual gap in the existing literature by integrating critical discourse analysis with creative media production. It contributes to the emerging scholarship on digital religion through a model that bridges theological communication, media literacy, and participatory culture.

The Role of Law in the Implementation of Islamic Social Reporting: A Case Study of Islamic Banking in Asia

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyze the influence of government regulation on the implementation of Islamic Social Reporting (ISR) in Islamic banking across five countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. ISR is a form of sustainability reporting based on Sharia principles, covering six main dimensions: responsibility to fund providers, employees, society, the environment, products, and compliance with regulations. This study employs a qualitative approach using content analysis of annual and sustainability reports of Islamic banks from 2014 to 2023. The findings show that regulations such as POJK No. 51/2017 in Indonesia, the Islamic Financial Services Act (IFSA) 2013 and ESG Guidelines in Malaysia, sustainability policies from the Central Bank of Kuwait, the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) guidelines in the United Arab Emirates, and reporting standards from the Central Bank of Bahrain have contributed to improvements in ISR practices, both in terms of formal compliance and the substance of the content. However, most reporting remains administrative in nature and does not fully reflect the values of maqāṣid al-sharī’a. Therefore, this study recommends strengthening regulations that not only mandate reporting but also emphasize quality, depth, and the integration of Islamic values into sustainability practices in Islamic banking to achieve meaningful social and environmental

Valorization of Pb 340 rubberwood into liquid smoke as an alternative latex coagulant for Ribbed Smoked Sheet

    Get PDF
Formic acid, commonly used as a coagulant, has been criticized for its adverse environmental impact, leading to the search for sustainable alternatives. Additionally, the rubber processing industry generates a significant amount of unproductive rubber wood during replanting. A promising path to environmental sustainability is to utilize this potential for liquid smoke production. This study examines the use of liquid smoke from rubber wood Clon PB 340 as a latex coagulant and its effect on RSS quality. The findings indicate that RSS adhered to the P0 standard criteria for all tested liquid smoke concentrations. The 5% liquid smoke introduction to RSS, stored for 7 days, achieved the SRI 5 standard. Additionally, liquid smoke additions effectively managed dirt content, meeting or surpassing control criteria at concentrations of 5%, 20%, and 25%. Although the volatile matter content occasionally met SRI 5 standards at specific concentrations (10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%), the ash content across all treatments, including the control, did not meet the SRI 5 quality benchmarks. Using liquid smoke from non-productive rubber wood Clon PB 340 as a natural coagulant holds promise for eco-friendly latex processing. This study may advance the rubber industry's adoption of liquid smoke, promoting higher-quality, environmentally sustainable products
