DO PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS LIKE MATHEMATICS?
Importance of mathematics as a school subject is evident in a fact that it is a constituent part of core curriculum for basic education in all education systems in the world. First few years of education are of crucial importance to the formation of attitudes towards mathematics. Attitudes are important because they navigate our actions and by doing so, influence our reality and our future as well. Research on attitudes towards mathematics has considerably increased over the past few years, since the importance of mathematics is getting continuously more accentuated. In the context of schools and education, it is emphasized how positive attitude towards mathematics influences students’ relationship with school-work, studying, confidence and behaviour. The aim of the study was to determine primary school students’ attitudes towards mathematics. One hundred and seventy-one students from 3rd to 8th grade from III Primary School Varaždin, Croatia participated in the research. The data were analyzed with t-test and one-way ANOVA for independent samples. The research has shown that there is no statistically significant gender difference in attitudes towards mathematics; however, age difference was confirmed. It was also found that younger students in primary education had a more positive attitude towards mathematics than older students. Practical implications of acquired results could be in providing additional support to 5th and 6th grade students when the change from positive to negative attitude happens.

PECULIARITIES OF HEALTHCARE SPECIALISTS’ COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Healthcare specialists are expected to possess competences essential for a successful fulfilment of their duties. Although specialists’ practical competences enabling them to deal with a wide range of health conditions are the key ones, communicative competence, implying an ability to use a target language “accurately, appropriately, and flexibly” (Yule, 2010, p.194), has also had an immense impact on the accomplishment of professional duties (World Health Organisation, 2005). It follows that apart from giving opportunities to acquire knowledge about medicine and practical skills, medical education institutions are expected to teach 21st century students to communicate effectively using various linguistic tools applicable in their professional context (Zethsen and Askehave, 2006). The present article aims to elucidate the peculiarities of communicative competence that practising or future healthcare providers should possess in order to demonstrate how it enables them to accomplish their responsibilities by communicating with patients and, thus, provide them with qualitative care or treatment in a foreign language, specifically English as a foreign language. With the aim to reach the goal, a scientific literature review was conducted. The theoretical implications were supported by the examples of medical encounters; in the given encounters, the use of the selected language aspects and participants’ non-verbal cues were interpreted.
THE EMPIRICAL RESEARCH OF THE ATTITUDE TO THE CONCEPT PATRIOTISM AND OF THE DEGREE OF ITS COMPREHENSION AMONG LATVIAN TEENAGERS UNDER CONDITIONS OF GLOBALIZATION
Succession of generations, especially under conditions of globalisation, polyculture and integration processes in circumstances of socially economic transformation of the society and state leads to the collapse of the system of traditional values and alteration of the content and meaning of numerous phenomena and concepts. The given processes in the modern society are eroding such socially moral and value landmarks as respect and love to the Motherland, self-sacrifice and patriotism, wish and ability to work for the sake of the country, aspiration to be useful for it. The Aim of the research is to determine the attitude and degree of understanding of the concept “patriotism” among Latvian teenagers. The theoretical analysis makes it possible to conclude that the main idea of the concept patriotism consists of considering it as one of the highest values of the individual and is the basis of life orientations, defining the strategy of the individual’s development, harmonisation of the society and the state. In the empirical way, the particular and the general understanding of the concept ‘patriotism’ by Latvian teenagers was defined, how patriotism is manifested, the level of pride for one’s country, ways of upbringing of patriotic values, personal qualities of a patriot / an antipatriot and the activity directed towards motivation of active actions for sake of one’s country.
