CHARLES SIMIC’S USES OF HIS-STORY
Get PDFThis article consists of three sections. The first aims at presenting brief theoretical considerations on the issues of public history and autobiography. The second focuses on a synopsis of the North-American poet Charles Simic’s memoir entitled “In the Beginning...” which is part of his book Wonderful Words, Silent Truth (1994). The third explores the interplay between his private history and the collective history of this century, observing closely some key aspects, such as the use of a child’s perspective, the use of the comic to report the tragic, and the device of fragment in narrative. In doing so, I will be illustrating the fragility of boundaries between history and fiction, considering biography a fictional construction, since it is a made-up story, which does not necessarily lack truth.This article consists of three sections. CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION IN THE EFL WRITING CLASS
Get PDFCombining insights from cognitive linguistics, discourse analysis, intercultural rhetoric, and intercultural communication theory, this paper discusses issues in EFL writing classes that arise from cultural specificities. Namely, it discusses topic development, readers’ expectations, and rhetorical organization across cultures, as well as their importance to the production of a “communicative” text in English. The paper also offers a rationale for the teaching of culture in the writing class and advances possible activities that aim at the production of discourse that is close to the “communicative text” in English.Combining insights from cognitive linguistics, discourse analysis, intercultural rhetoric, and intercultural communication theory, this paper discusses issues in EFL writing classes that arise from cultural specificities. VERMEER IN THE AGE OF THE DIGITAL REPRODUCTION AND VIRTUAL COMMUNICATION
Get PDFThe twentieth century was responsible for the revival of the visual arts, lending techniques to literature, in particular, after the advent of cinema. This visual revival is illustrated by the intersemiotic translations of Girl with a Pearl Earring: a recent low-budget movie was responsible for the revival of ordinary public interest in an art masterpiece from the seventeenth century. However, it was the book about the portrait that catalyzed this process of rejuvenation by verbalizing the portrait and inspiring the cinematographic adaptation, thereby creating the intersemiotic web. In this media-saturated environment we now live in, not only do books inspire movie adaptations, but movies inspire literary works; adaptations of screenplays are published; movies are adapted into musicals, television shows and even videogames. For James Naremore, every form of retelling should be added to the “study of adaptation in the age of the mechanical reproduction and electronic communication” (NAREMORE, 2000: 12-15), long previewed in Walter Benjamin’s milestone article (1936). Nowadays, the celebrated expression could be changed to the age of the digital reproduction and virtual communication, since new technologies and the use of new media have been changing the relations between, and within, the arts. The objective of this essay is to explore Vermeer’s influence on contemporary art and media production, with focus on the collection of portraits from the book entitled Domestic Landscapes (2007) by the Dutch photographer Bert Teunissen, confirming the study of recycling within a general theory of repetition proposed by James Naremore, under the light of intermediality
LITERATURE, NATURE, CITIZENSHIP, AND GLOBAL FLOWS: OF TRANSNATIONAL AND TRANSCULTURAL CROSSROADS
Get PDFThis essay problematizes the relationship between literature, nature and citizenship in our digital culture. By focusing on the tension between cultural homogenization and cultural heterogenization in connection with the tension between belonging to a national place and being mobile in transnational space, it deals with the following questions and issues: What is the meaning of identity and citizenship in the digital age of cybernations and netizens? How does literary representation render the cultural construction of the human-machine/ human-nature interface? How does literature translate and negotiate the disruptive in-between zone of inter- and intracultural disjunctures and conjunctures—the place where diverse histories, customs, values, beliefs and cognitive systems are contested and interwoven—as inhabited place, that is, as affective geography (Soja)? What are the theoretical tools to map and measure this inhabited contact zone? In the process of giving tentative and partial answers, this essay elaborates a link between the political unconscious (Jameson), the cultural unconscious (Bourdieu) and the ecological unconscious (Walter) of the human-machine/ human-nature interface that surfaces in contemporary multi-ethnic writing; a transwriting (Walter) that, in the face of natural catastrophes, instantiates a decolonizing attitude towards nature by delineating new forms of cohabitation involving the entire biota
ESCOLA PÚBLICA: LUGAR DE NARRATIVAS EM INGLÊS
Get PDFO presente trabalho traz um recorte de um estudo em que se procura qualificar a prática de ensino de inglês no Ensino Fundamental, em uma escola pública estadual de Porto Alegre. Foi introduzida a narrativa oral de histórias infantis nessas salas de aula, visando a conjugar uso e aprendizagem da língua. O aporte teórico vincula-se aos estudos de VYGOTSKY (1989), Bruner (2001), BETTELHEIM (1978), HALL (2001), HEATH (2001), ZILES (2009) entre outros. Este trabalho investigar o papel das narrativas no aprendizado e no desenvolvimento da comunicação em língua estrangeira. Observamos e analisamos essa prática com base na pesquisa-ação, a partir das anotações em diário de campo, feitas logo após tais eventos. Foi considerado o ponto de vista dos estudantes, pois esses alunos demonstram compreender a narrativa conceitualmente, além de sentirem-se extremamente entusiasmados
O MONÓLOGO DRAMÁTICO DE ROBERT BROWNING: UMA NOVA FORMA LITERÁRIA DE REVELAÇÃO/OCULTAÇÃO DA MENTE MASCULINA
Get PDFSeguindo o caminho aberto por Shakespeare na criação de personagens psicologicamente motivados pela extrema necessidade de controlar, manipular e até mesmo eliminar a outra parte, o poeta vitoriano Robert Browning (1812-1889), revelou ao mundo os traços da mente masculina que fazia uso de palavras e gestos cuidadosamente premeditados, afirmando sua supremacia em situações domésticas através de uma violência física e psicológica excessivas contra a mulher. O presente artigo destina-se a fazer algumas considerações sobre a forma poética utilizada por Browning para este fim, a inovadora técnica do monólogo dramático, através da análise de alguns trechos dos poemas “Bishop Blougram’s Apology”, “How It Strikes a Contemporary” (ambos inseridos na obra Men and Women de 1855), “Porphyria’s Lover (inserido na obra Dramatic Lyrics de 1842), The Ring and the Book (1868-1869) e, finalmente, “A Forgiveness” (1876). Trata-se de uma forma de revelação ou de ocultação do perfil de alguns dos seus personagens masculinos atormentados e em permanente conflito interno, colocados em situações discursivas complexas que examinam não somente questões de poder e de gênero, mas sobretudo de verdade e moralidade
