WELLS
INTERMEDIALITY IN ELIZABETH BISHOP´S POETRY
Starting from the preciseness and expressiveness of the descriptions in Elizabeth Bishop´s poetry, the essay relies on the concepts of intermediality, iconotext and ekphrasis for the analysis of three of the poet´s best known poems, “Arrival at Santos”, “Brazil, January 1, 1502” and “The Burglar of Babylon”. The three are read as evidence of the poet´s changing attitudes towards Brazil as well as illustrations of the role played by intermediality – the relation between Literature and the other arts and media – as tools for social and historical criticism
A INADEQUAÇÃO DO CONCEITO DE BILDUNGSROMAN EM MRS. DALLOWAY
IMPOSSIBILITIES AND POSSIBILITIES: THE CHALLENGES OF DRAMATIC PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
Surely, performance is a mode of behaviour that characterizes any activity. Yet, placing performance within the broad perspectives of Intercultural Theatre and Sociosemiotics, the proposed paper focuses on theatre and on live performance in order to attempt a reflection on theoretical and procedural provisos and potentials of dramatic performance analysis. With an additional focus on and foregrounding the conceptual “contestedness” of performance, as well as chronicling definitions of performance and dramatic performance analysis, and challenging the received distinction between the notions of performance analysis and historical reconstruction, I argue that these two processes engage in reconstruction, since any live performance is evanescent, and that, strictly speaking, analytical procedures and constraints equally apply and are equally mediated by the analyst
STEVIE SMITH’S ANGELS
Angels appear regularly in Stevie Smith’s poems and drawings. The latter show disturbing, cruel or cynical figures, whereas the former exhibit a wider range of considerations. Nevertheless, the predominant sensation is that angels are rather disquieting than helpful beings. Thus an uneasy tension is created between God and (His) angels who, according to traditional lore, are His messengers, therefore subordinated to Him. In Stevie Smith’s poems angels do not in general fit regularly in the orthodox pattern. The purpose of this paper is to analyze these contradictory insights and to examine the accompanying drawings. A classification of different “types” of angels is presented, which does not necessarily match the categories known through traditional angelology. Since discussions of Stevie Smith’s stance as regards religious feeling and dogma are accessible in an extensive bibliography I intend rather to contribute a specific treatment of angels within the general framework of Stevie Smith’s concern with religion.Angels appear regularly in Stevie Smith’s poems and drawings. RELIGIÃO E POLÍTICAS DE IDENTIDADE: A FIGURA DO CONJURADOR EM THE CONJURE WOMAN, DE CHARLES W. CHESTNUTT
This essay purposes to examine the representation of conjurers and conjuring in the fictional world of The Conjure Woman, a collection of short stories published in 1899 by the African-American writer Charles W. Chesnutt. Through the analysis of four representative narratives – “Mars Jeems’s Nightmare”, “Po’ Sandy”, “Sis’ Becky’s Pickanini” and “The goophered grapevine” –, it argues that the spiritual interventions on the part of the conjurers constituted, above all, instances of political and cultural resistance, for they aimed at preventing the reification and historical erasure of the black subject, in face of the Euro-American colonizing enterprise. The narratives also attempt to counteract reductionist representations of the black subject by painting a more holistic and complex picture of the black experience in the United States. Insights from the field of cultural and literary criticism, as well as religious studies, form the theoretical basis of the essay. The overall purpose is to show Chesnutt’s efforts in confronting the literary and cultural trends of his time, which insisted on depicting blacks either as subservient, happy with their fate, or as individuals lacking culture, intelligence, religion and history
