Background: Exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, particularly in tropical regions like Indonesia, can cause skin damage characterized by increased epidermal thickness due to keratinocyte hyperproliferation, contributing to photoaging. Natural photoprotective agents rich in antioxidants such as Dayak onion (Eleutherine palmifolia) extract are expected to mitigate these effects. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of applying Dayak onion extract cream at varying concentrations on epidermal thickness of UVB-induced male Wistar rat skin. Methods: This study was a true experimental study with a post-test only control group design. A total of 36 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: a control group (given placebo cream) and three treatment groups given Dayak onion extract cream at concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20%. UVB exposure was carried out every two days for 30 days, along with application of the cream before and after UVB radiation. Epidermal thickness was analyzed through histopathological examination using Hematoxylin-Eosin staining and observed under 400x magnification. Results: Statistical analysis showed significant differences (p < 0,05) in epidermal thickness between the control group and the treatment groups. The mean epidermal thickness in the treatment groups was lower than that of the control group, with the greatest reduction observed in the 20% concentration group, followed by the 15% and 10% groups. There was no significant difference between the 15% and 20% concentrations. Conclusion: Application of Dayak onion extract cream is effective in reducing epidermal thickness, with a concentration of 20% providing optimal protective effects. These findings support the potential of Dayak onion as a natural photoprotective agent. Keywords: Dayak onion, Eleutherine palmifolia, epidermal thickness, photoaging, antioxidan

    Get PDF
Sustainable development is a global challenge which requires an innovative approach merging environmental science, economics, policy-making, and artificial intelligence. The data-driven approach using intelligent methodologies is valuable for evaluating and mitigating environmental impacts. This study exploits data from different sources and machine learning methods to analyze key sustainability indicators, focusing on CO2 emissions, ecological footprint, and load capacity factor. The analysis emphasizes advanced feature selection techniques and predictive modelling to identify the most significant economic, industrial, agricultural, and environmental factors that affect sustainability. Comparative analysis shows differences between the importance of indicators established through expert-driven decisions across various scientific fields and AI-driven assessments. The research attempts to solve the problem following a multi-step process: (1) clustering of countries based on environmental indicators to identify patterns and classify according to similar performance; (2) evaluation of the socio-economic and environmental factors’ impact on CO2 emissions using machine learning; (3) predicting future trends in emissions and sustainability metrics through high-level artificial intelligence techniques such as Hidden Markov models. This study will potentially serve policymakers, enabling data-driven decision-making to promote sustainable development efforts. The results demonstrate the value of interdisciplinary approaches to deal with sustainability challenges and to stimulate a balanced path toward economic growth and environmental protection

Climate Change, driven by greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), demands concrete responses from all sectors, including the higher education party. This research aimed to calculate the carbon footprint (CF) generated by the core activities of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, UAEMEX) from 2021 to 2024, and to propose strategies for its neutralization. A hybrid methodology was adopted, based on international standards such as ISO 14064-1:2019, PAS 2050, PAS 2060 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, adapted to the characteristics of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This approach classified emissions into three scopes: direct emissions from fossil fuels (Scope 1), indirect emissions from electricity consumption (Scope 2) and other indirect emissions associated with waste management, paper consumption and infrastructure (Scope 3). The results indicate a 99% increase in the institutional carbon footprint between 2021 and 2022, linked to the resumption of face-to-face activities caused by COVID-19, subsequently by stabilization in the generation of HC in the subsequent years. Effective mitigation actions were identified, avoiding nearly 10 million kg CO₂e, with emphasis on sustainable university transport, process digitalization and carbon absorption through green areas. The study proposes a comprehensive neutralization plan and a replicable methodology, positioning UAEMEX as a national benchmark in university sustainability and contributing to global climate commitments through institutional management
