Arabic Language Learning in a Multicultural Context at Pesantren

    Get PDF
Arabic language education in Indonesia faces the challenge of being perceived as mono-cultural and narrowly religious, often excluding broader multicultural contexts. This study explores Arabic language learning in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) across culturally diverse regions in Indonesia to identify how multicultural values are integrated into the curriculum. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research was conducted in six provinces: West Java, Central Java, East Java, Lombok, Bali, and Sulawesi. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and surveys involving 50 Arabic teachers and 300 students in pesantren institutions. The findings reveal that Arabic learning in pesantren reflects four key dimensions of multicultural integration: cultural, social, intellectual, and spiritual. These dimensions shape learners’ engagement with Arabic not only as a religious language but also as a medium for intercultural dialogue and identity negotiation. Additionally, regional cultural influences significantly affect teaching strategies and learners’ motivations. The research highlights the potential of pesantren to serve as transformative spaces for multicultural Islamic education, bridging religious values with local cultural diversity. This study underscores the importance of recontextualizing Arabic instruction within Indonesia’s multicultural society, promoting inclusivity while maintaining pesantren’s core religious missions in the evolving landscape of education in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0

Da\u27wah and Commodification of Religion in West Java Broadcasting Institutions

    Get PDF
This research aims to analyze the ideology underlying the operation of religion-based broadcasting institutions and how the process of commodification of da\u27wah occurs in West Java. Using a qualitative approach and case studies, this study examines three Broadcasting Institutions in Bandung, Cirebon, and Tasikmalaya, which were selected based on their active involvement in da\u27wah broadcasting and wide audience reach. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews, field observations, and analysis of the content of the da\u27wah program for six months. The results of the study show that da\u27wah has undergone a transformation from a spiritual function to a media product that is packaged according to market interests and dominant ideologies. Commodification occurs in three aspects: broadcast content, audiences as commodities and sources of funds, and media labor that acts as a capitalistic production apparatus. This research confirms that Broadcasting Institutions in West Java not only prioritize educational functions in da\u27wah, but also make religion an economic and ideological instrument to maintain its existence in the midst of competition in the broadcasting industry. These findings contribute to the study of the political economy of the media and become an important reference for policymakers in balancing commercial interests and da\u27wah functions in the media

The Affinity of Local Political Branding Toward The Distinction of Constituent Taste in NTT

    Get PDF
This study examines the relationship between candidates’ branding politic and the political preferences (selera) of voter groups during the 2024 Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) gubernatorial election. The research is grounded in the strong influence of local political culture in shaping political orientation, both among elites and the general public. The main objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the distingsi of political selera among the public based on their ideal leadership qualifications, and (2) to analyze the alignment between candidates’ branding politik and those political selera. This research employs a critical approach with a single-case study design. The findings reveal three categories of voter selera politik: Legitimate Taste (upper class), Middle-Brow Taste (middle class), and Popular Taste (lower class). The three gubernatorial candidate pairs presented distinct branding: Lema–Natalia portrayed a millennial-opposition figure; Lena–Asadoma emphasized political networks and accommodative communication; Kamlasi–Garu highlighted local Timorese identity. All candidates capitalized on symbolic capital to reach middle- and lower-class voters. The study concludes that political preference in NTT is not entirely shaped by rationality, but rather by culturally and symbolically embedded selera. This research underscores that the hegemony of local political culture remains highly dominant in the dynamics of political contestation and strategy in NT

Re-thinking Ibn ‘Arabī\u27s Status as Mujtahid

    Get PDF
Ibn \u27Arabī, who is also referred to as Doctor Maximus (al-Shaykh al-Akbar) within the Sufi world, has been recognized for centuries as one of the awliyā\u27 of God. Nevertheless, this status did not preclude numerous scholars from designating him as a mujtahid. The issue lies in the conception of a walī as an individual endowed with spiritual knowledge that enables them to comprehend matters without the necessity of learning or research. This prompts further inquiry into the question of whether Ibn \u27Arabī, the walī, can be designated a mujtahid. This article employs a qualitative approach and a review of the extant literature to examine the claims of scholars who are based on Ibn \u27Arabī\u27s own thoughts. The culmination of the research indicated that, on the one hand, Ibn \u27Arabī asserted that a walī cannot be designated as a mujtahid, as his autonomous determination is derived from the method of kashf. Therefore, it can be posited that the individual in question is not, in fact, Ibn \u27Arabī. Nevertheless, historical evidence suggests that Ibn \u27Arabī engaged in rigorous study of Islamic law and jurisprudence. This suggests the possibility that he may have utilized ijtihād in his independent decision-making, thereby classifying him as a mujtahid. However, prior to conducting a thorough investigation into the underlying factors that influenced Ibn \u27Arabī\u27s independent decisions, it would be premature to categorize him as a mujtahi

    Get PDF
The development of environmental values and pro-environmental behavior must begin from an early age, particularly within primary education. Schools, therefore, have a strategic role in shaping sustainable habits through educational interventions. This study aims to assess the need for educational programs that integrate green activities and to evaluate teachers’ and principals’ understanding of green consumer behavior. Using an Ex Post Facto research design and purposive sampling, data were collected from 32 fifth-grade teachers and 32 public primary school principals in Bandung, Indonesia. A validated Guttman-scale questionnaire was used, and data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative methods. The results showed that all respondents recognized the importance of implementing green activities and instilling green consumer behavior. The gap between conceptual understanding and classroom practice—particularly among teachers—indicates a need for more targeted capacity-building. This study highlights the importance of developing integrated, project-based, and contextually relevant learning models to promote environmental literacy and responsible consumption, contributing to the broader goals of environmental education and character development

Prices Never Lie: Political Parties Contribution to High Cost of Election in Indonesia

    Get PDF
Indonesia has been transformed in developing more inclusive and participatory electoral mechanisms. However, the high cost of organizing elections has been a necessity. This article aims to explain the increase in electoral costs in periodic elections. The discussion focuses on the influence of political parties in increasing the political costs of elections, given that parties require costs for planning, campaigning and internal operations. This research uses a qualitative-explanatory approach, through data collection of official documents and media reports. The data that has been coded is then analyzed interactively, with the Nvivo 12 application. The results show that there is an increasing trend in the election budget, from the 2004 election to the last election in 2024. The increased costs follow the design of organizing elections and the response of political parties to the increase in campaign operational costs. The increase in electoral political costs is not followed by the structuring of the political financing system, proper supervision of party revenue sources, and rigorous transparency and accountability mechanisms. This article contributes to explaining the complexities and dynamics of electoral financing, focusing on the contribution of political parties in institutionalizing high-cost elections in Indonesi

    No full text
This study explores the impact of Bengkulu local language interference on the speaking skills of students learning Arabic at MAN Islam Cendekia Bengkulu. While language interference in second language acquisition is well-documented, there is limited research on the influence of regional languages, such as Bengkulu, in the Southeast Asian educational context. Using a qualitative approach, this study involved interviews and classroom observations of 30 students to identify patterns of Interference in Arabic pronunciation, sentence structure, and vocabulary. The findings revealed significant phonetic similarities between Bengkulu and Arabic, with local language phonetics contributing to noticeable speech errors, particularly in consonant articulation and sentence construction. These errors were linked to specific characteristics of the Bengkulu language, which affect the student\u27s ability to produce Arabic sounds and structures accurately. The study emphasizes the need for targeted strategies to address language interference in Arabic language teaching. It recommends adjustments in curriculum design and teaching methods to help mitigate the impact of local language interference, ultimately improving students\u27 Arabic proficiency. The implications of this research extend to teacher training and materials development, urging educators to incorporate contrastive linguistic analysis and oral drills that directly target problematic phonetic and syntactic areas. Future studies are encouraged to examine interference effects across other local Indonesian languages and explore longitudinal changes in student performance following targeted instructional interventions. This study explores the impact of Bengkulu local language interference on the speaking skills of students learning Arabic at MAN Islam Cendekia Bengkulu.
