Bridging text and reality: The principles of Tadabbur from An-Nabulsi\u27s perspective in modern tafsir studies

    No full text
This study deeply examines the principles of Tadabbur (contemplation) of Surat Al-Baqarah in Muhammad Ratib An-Nabulsi\u27s exegesis, "Tadabbur Āyātillāh fī al-Nafsi wa al-Kawni wa al-Ḥayāti," and its relevance to contemporary Qur\u27anic interpretative studies. Tadabbur is essential for holistic Qur\u27anic comprehension, yet systematic literature on its principles remains limited, especially approaches integrating spiritual, cosmological, and practical life aspects. An-Nabulsi offers a unique methodology bridging sacred texts with modern realities. Employing a qualitative-analytical approach, this study explores An-Nabulsi\u27s Tadabbur principles, highlighting how his exegesis provides a transformative framework for applicable Qur\u27anic understanding. Findings indicate that An-Nabulsi\u27s principles are highly relevant, offering a new lens for addressing modern human challenges, while enriching the scholarly treasury of tafsir, rendering the Qur\u27an a dynamic life guide. This research contributes to the development of comprehensive Qur\u27anic Tadabbur methodologies

The concept of environmental damage in the Qur\u27an: An analysis of the thematic method of Abdussatar Fathullah Sa\u27id and its relevance to Hifzhul Bi\u27ah

    No full text
Environmental degradation results from humans disobeying God\u27s command to maintain harmony with nature. All elements of the universe reflect God\u27s word and form an ecosystem. When humans disrupt this balance through selfish actions, nature reacts in ways harmful to human life, underlining that everything is subject to Allah\u27s will. This study analyzes the concept of environmental damage in the Qur\u27an using Abdussatar Fathullah Said\u27s maudu’i method and explores its connection with Yusuf Qardawi\u27s idea of hifzhul bi\u27ah (environmental preservation). Using qualitative library research, it finds that the Qur\u27an\u27s teachings on preventing environmental harm align with hifzhul bi\u27ah: 1) Humans, as earth\u27s caliphs, must preserve and protect nature (QS Al-Baqarah 2:30); 2) The Qur\u27an commands maintaining and forbids destroying the environment, as in QS Al-A\u27raf 7:56 and other verses (QS Al-Baqarah 2:11-12, 60, 205; Al-A\u27raf 7:56, 74, 85; Hud 11:85; As-Syu\u27ara 26:150-152)

Qur’anic Pedagogy for Interreligious Tolerance in Islamic Religious Education

    No full text
Religious prejudice among students poses a serious challenge to Islamic education in pluralistic societies. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Qur’an-based Religious Diversity (QbRD) method in reducing religious prejudice among Muslim university students. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research combined the qualitative development of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) materials with a quasi-experimental quantitative approach. The QbRD learning model was implemented in four stages: (1) student-led discussions on the concepts of faith and disbelief; (2) lecturer-led reflection on the Islamic mission of moral excellence; (3) student analysis of Qur’anic verses concerning Muslims and non-Muslims; and (4) student synthesis of theological perspectives based on the Qur’an. The study involved 12 IRE classes, with 200 students in the intervention group and 200 in the non-intervention group. Statistical analysis showed a significant improvement in the intervention group’s positive religious attitudes (t = 16.925, p < 0.01), while the control group showed minimal change. These findings indicate that QbRD fosters inclusive theological understanding and interfaith tolerance among students. The study suggests that Qur’an-based and dialogical pedagogies can play a transformative role in Islamic education, particularly in universities and pesantren, to promote peace and religious moderation

The Transformation of Tablighi Jamaat\u27s Da\u27wah: Digital Adaptation and Political Engagement in Indonesia

    No full text
This research examines the evolving da\u27wah dynamics among Tablighi Jamaat adherents in Indonesia. Founded by Muhammad Ilyas Al-Kandahlawi in India in 1926, this transnational movement has significantly impacted Indonesia\u27s Islamic landscape through systematic propagation practices including khuruj (preaching journeys), jaulah (local rounds), and chillah (40-day periods). The movement\u27s da\u27wah methodologies are rooted in Jamaat tradition, transmitted through written texts, particularly Fadhailul A\u27mal, and oral bayan (lectures) by amirs (leaders). This investigation addresses a scholarly gap by uncovering transformative shifts in Tablighi Jamaat\u27s da\u27wah practices—previously underexplored areas that reveal how traditional Islamic missionary methods adapt to contemporary Indonesian contexts while maintaining doctrinal authenticity. Using qualitative analysis, this study demonstrates that da\u27wah exhibits inherent dynamism, evolving alongside cultural and civilizational advancements. This dynamism is evident in Tablighi Jamaat\u27s traditions, where the movement maintains strict adherence to core principles while implementing modifications in practical application methods. The findings reveal notable conceptual adaptability in how current followers execute da\u27wah activities, representing a balance between preserving traditional methodology and responding to contemporary challenges. This adaptability demonstrates the movement\u27s capacity to navigate modern contexts without compromising fundamental beliefs. The study contributes new insights into the intersection of traditional Islamic practices and contemporary Indonesian society, showing how religious movements maintain authenticity while embracing necessary adaptations. However, the research acknowledges methodological limitations and restricted thematic scope, indicating areas requiring further exploration in future research endeavors to fully understand these complex transformation processes

Navigating Heritage: Challenges and Strategies for Oral Tradition Preservation in Jalawastu Community, Central Java, Indonesia

    No full text
Globalisation and modernisation are often perceived as threats to preserving cultural traditions. This study explores how the Jalawastu community in Brebes, Central Java, Indonesia, maintains its cultural identity through practising and transmitting oral traditions. Despite exposure to external influences—including interpersonal interactions and digital communication technologies—the Jalawastu people demonstrate a dynamic between adaptation and cultural continuity. Their exposure to the outside world, facilitated by interpersonal interactions and communication technologies, has had significant implications for the continuity and transformation of their oral traditions. Using a qualitative research design, data were gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation. The analysis draws on oral tradition and social change theories, particularly Ogburn’s (1922) and Soekanto’s (2012) works. The findings reveal a complex interplay between cultural preservation and transformation. Oral traditions are being preserved through their integration into cultural tourism, while shifts occur due to increased interaction with outsiders, especially through employment and intermarriage. These changes have prompted younger generations to leave the village, often due to their inability to conform to traditional norms. The study offers valuable insights for cultural policy, community development, and heritage education programs, particularly in rural and indigenous settings facing similar challenges

Crafting Interfaith Harmony through Ritual and Identity Integration: A Localised Muslim-Hindu Model from Saren, Bali, Indonesia

    No full text
Indonesia\u27s complex religious landscape presents potential and persistent challenges in cultivating interfaith harmony, particularly in local contexts where theological divergence and structural segregation exacerbate communal divisions. This study examines the intentional construction of interreligious harmony in Saren Village, Bali, by analysing culturally embedded strategies employed by Muslim and Hindu communities. The research adopts a phenomenological approach, incorporating in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. It is theoretically grounded in Émile Durkheim\u27s (1912) theory of social integration and Diana Eck\u27s (2001) concept of religious pluralism. Durkheim highlights the role of shared rituals in generating collective solidarity and a cohesive moral order. At the same time, Eck emphasises active and equal participation across religious traditions as essential for a pluralist society. The findings demonstrate that traditional practices—such as Subak (a cooperative irrigation system), Bale Banjar (a local consensus forum), and Burdah (a Muslim devotional performance incorporated into Hindu ceremonial life)—serve as functional mechanisms for fostering interreligious cooperation, ritual synergy, and hybrid identity formation. Despite enduring challenges such as spatial segregation, cultural dominance, and digital polarisation, the Saren community sustains interfaith harmony through youth engagement, inclusive ritual adaptations, and grassroots digital literacy initiatives. Unlike many Balinese localities that reinforce Hindu cultural hegemony, Saren exemplifies a reciprocal model in which Muslim contributions, particularly the Burdah, are ritually embedded within dominant Hindu frameworks. This two-way assimilation of ritual practice marks a notable departure from conventional patterns of religious accommodation. Beyond applying Durkheim and Eck, this study contributes a contextual model of interfaith harmony grounded in reciprocal ritual integration. It underscores the value of local religious practices as generative sources for interreligious coexistence in plural societies
