Ethical Fragmentation and Public Moral Reasoning: Teachers, Religious Pluralism, and Kantian Evaluation in Indonesia

    Get PDF
This study analyzes the ethical architecture of the teaching profession in Indonesia by examining how teacher ethics is governed and evaluated within a context of institutional and religious pluralism. It seeks to explain why teacher ethics has largely functioned as an instrument of professional governance rather than as a framework of public moral reasoning that supports teachers’ moral agency. This study adopts a qualitative normative–philosophical approach, analyzing Indonesian education policy documents—particularly the Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology No. 67 of 2024—and codes of ethics issued by major teacher professional organizations (PGRI, IGI, PERGUNU, and Muhammadiyah). The analysis employs conceptual and argumentative methods, using Kantian ethics as an evaluative framework, while media-reported cases are referenced illustratively to contextualize normative tensions. The study identifies three central findings. First, teacher ethics in Indonesia is primarily framed in the language of compliance, discipline, and procedure, positioning ethics as a mechanism of professional governance. Second, the pluralism of organizational codes of ethics produces ethical fragmentation, whereby similar professional actions may be evaluated differently depending on institutional affiliation and adjudicative authority. Third, this configuration constrains teachers’ moral agency by prioritizing administrative conformity over rational moral justification that is public and universal in character. The findings suggest that addressing ethical fragmentation in the teaching profession requires more than regulatory harmonization or procedural standardization. Instead, there is a need for a shared framework of public moral reasoning that enables plural religious and institutional ethics to be evaluated through consistent and publicly justifiable criteria. Such a framework has implications for education policy, professional ethical governance, and the cultivation of teachers as autonomous moral agents in plural societies. This study contributes to religious studies and professional ethics scholarship by reframing ethical fragmentation not as a technical governance problem but as a problem of public moral justification within plural moral traditions. By employing Kantian ethics as an evaluative lens rather than a prescriptive doctrine, the study offers an original conceptual contribution to debates on religious pluralism, professional ethics, and moral agency in highly regulated educational contexts such as Indonesia

The development of information and communication technology (ICT) has brought about major changes in various aspects of life, including early childhood education (PAUD). Although ICT has the potential to support children\u27s cognitive, social-emotional, and motor development, many PAUD institutions still face obstacles in utilizing it. The problems that arise include limited facilities, a lack of teacher competence in integrating ICT, and a lack of guidance on the healthy and safe use of technology for children. This situation has created a gap between the need for digital literacy in the modern era and the ability of ECE institutions to meet it. This study aims to identify effective strategies for utilizing ICT in supporting the digital literacy of early childhood, analyze the challenges of implementation in PAUD institutions, and provide practical recommendations for teachers, parents, and stakeholders. The research method used is a systematic literature review, which examines relevant literature in the form of journals, books, and articles related to ICT and digital literacy in early childhood. The results of the study show that integrating ICT into early childhood education can improve children\u27s cognitive, social-emotional, and motor skills. The use of interactive educational applications can support the development of digital literacy, although challenges such as limited facilities and a lack of teacher training still exist. This study concludes that effective ICT use strategies can help prepare children for future digital challenges. Integration of Malay Cultural Values in Islamic Education: An Analysis of Local Values-Based Contextual Approach

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyze the integration of Malay cultural values in Islamic education through a contextual approach based on local culture (Contextual Teaching and Learning/CTL). Malay culture possesses its own noble values, such as politeness, respect for social hierarchy, mutual cooperation, and the principle of adat bersendi syarak, syarak bersendi Kitabullah. All of which are aligned with the teachings of Islam. Although many studies have discussed Islamic education and local culture, research that specifically examines the integration of Malay cultural values within the CTL learning framework remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to fill this research gap through the conceptual and theoretical analysis. This is a library research using a qualitative descriptive approach by analyzing various relevant scholarly sources on Malay culture, Islamic education, and CTL theory. The findings indicates that Malay cultural values can be conceptually structured as a foundation for integration within the curriculum and instructional strategies of Islamic education. This integration had the potential to strengthen the development of students’ religious and social character while also contributing to the preservation of Malay cultural identity in the educational context. This study was theoretical in nature. It is expected to enrich the body of knowledge in Islamic education and serve as a foundation for future empirical research

This research investigates the effectiveness of a Project-Based Learning (PBL) model in enhancing Arabic creative writing skills among eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Mukhtariyah Tasikmalaya. Employing a classroom action research design conducted in two cycles, the research integrated systematic planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Students’ creative writing performance was assessed using an analytic writing rubric covering idea development, linguistic accuracy, creativity, and text organization. The findings reveal a notable improvement in students’ writing competence, as indicated by an increase in the mean score from 59.28 in the first cycle to 70 in the second cycle, accompanied by a rise in learning mastery from 52.38% to 71.43%. Beyond quantitative gains, the PBL model fostered higher learner engagement, collaboration, and creative expression in Arabic writing tasks. This research contributes to Arabic language pedagogy by providing empirical evidence on the pedagogical value of PBL at the lower secondary level and highlights its potential as an instructional alternative for developing creative writing skills. Practically, the findings underscore the importance of teacher-designed project activities in facilitating meaningful and student-centered Arabic writing instruction

Digital Catechesis as Cyber-Theological Practice: Model Integration, Semiotic Capacity, and Hybrid Faith Formation in Post-Pandemic Indonesia

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated unprecedented digital transformation across religious institutions, with approximately 80% of congregations worldwide adopting digital ministry by mid-2020. However, existing research predominantly examines isolated catechetical models, neglects semiotic dimensions, inadequately analyzes pedagogical mechanisms across platforms, and overlooks context-specific implementation in infrastructure-diverse settings, particularly in the Global South where 60% of Catholics reside. This study examined how the Diocese of Ruteng, Indonesia\u27s largest Catholic diocese, implemented digital catechesis during 2020–2022, focusing on model integration, language strategies, pedagogical approaches, and contextual adaptation across heterogeneous infrastructural contexts. A qualitative phenomenological design involved 39 participants (diocesan leaders, priests, catechists, and young Catholics) selected through purposive maximum variation sampling across urban, sub-district, and rural parishes. Data collection combined structured interviews, platform observations of 150+ posts, and document analysis. Thematic analysis generated three major themes with methodological triangulation ensuring rigor. Findings revealed simultaneous deployment of three complementary catechetical models creating comprehensive ecosystems. Persistent misalignment existed between content production (55–75% conceptual language) and youth preferences (symbolic language generating substantially higher interaction), attributed to semiotic capacity gaps rather than awareness deficits. Pedagogical effectiveness proved fundamentally constrained by facilitator capacity rather than platform affordances, with asynchronous platforms remaining underutilized despite dialogic potential. Rural parishes developed innovative "digitally-sourced analog catechesis" downloading content for offline face-to-face sessions demonstrating that digital transformation in resource-constrained contexts requires reconceptualizing digital-analog boundaries. Successful digital catechesis demands integrated model strategies, semiotic capacity building, facilitator training for asynchronous pedagogy, access equity attention, and institutional support for hybrid approaches. Effectiveness depends on context-responsive adaptation rather than uniform solutions. Contribution: This research introduces "digitally-sourced analog catechesis" as a fourth model in digital catechesis typology and establishes "semiotic capacity" as a critical variable in content effectiveness, challenging technological determinism while providing evidence-based frameworks for religious education in infrastructure-diverse contexts, with implications for faith formation practices globally

Parenting patterns for early childhood are very important because they affect the child\u27s spiritual development. Good parenting patterns will have a positive impact on the child\u27s growth. This study aims to see and analyze Islamic parenting patterns with the introduction of worship to children aged 4-5 years at Al-Munawarah Kindergarten. By using phenomenological research through a qualitative approach, it is hoped that this study will be able to describe the subjective experiences of individuals or groups in the context of Islamic parenting patterns. The results of this study are that (1) The model of parental role models as an illustration of early childhood in performing worship that children will prefer to imitate their parents or people around them. Because parents and teachers are models for them and children like to imitate and emulate them. In teaching role models, it is divided into two, namely consistency in worship and teach worship to young children directly. (2) Pattern fostering worship as religious tolerance for early childhood that parents at Al Munawarah Kindergarten who demonstrate tolerant and respectful attitudes. Parents give each other respect to their friends or neighbors so that early childhood children see firsthand the teachings given by their parents. Parents also give advice that focusing on worship is important and maintaining friendships of different religions is also important. In this case, religious differences can help their children develop the same attitude. Education carried out by parents at home, such as talking about diversity, can strengthen the values of tolerance. So, Islamic parenting is implemented through the example of parents/teachers in worship and fostering tolerance by showing respect in daily interactions, including towards followers of other religions

The sandalwood trade of the past is an interesting historical study topic to discuss, which is also one of the reasons why this theme is important to raise. Research on the transportation and sandalwood trade network in West Timor in the 19th century aims to reconstruct the historical process that occurred with the sandalwood trade in West Timor, which opened trade routes and networks with other regions in Asia and Europe. The main problem is how the transportation and trade network of West Timor sandalwood in the 19th century when West Timor was under the influence of the Dutch government? This is then explained in several research questions such as who were the main actors involved and what was the transportation model or system in the sandalwood trade in West Timor in the 19th century. To obtain answers to these main questions, a critical history method is used with the use of primary and secondary sources such as archives, journals, reports, photographs, and relevant reference reviews as well as archival analysis and literature studies to complete the data. The stages in this method include heuristics and data verification or source criticism, followed by interpretation and historiography or historical writing. This research found that Dutch government controls, such as shipping taxes, actually led to a decline in the sandalwood trade. Furthermore, local trade, initially conducted by indigenous traders from the Bugis, Makassarese, Javanese, and Chinese, began to be dominated by Chinese traders, while the outbound trade network was dominated by European traders. Similarly, sandalwood transportation and shipment were heavily influenced by West Timor\u27s geography

Dari Pionir ke Korporasi: Evolusi Deli Maatschappij dan Perekonomian Lokal di Sumatera Timur (1864–1924)

The trend of cigar smoking in Europe around the 19th century had a significant impact on the Deli Sultanate in East Sumatra. This trend necessitated a substantial supply of tobacco in Europe to ensure continued enjoyment. One of the countries that played a crucial role in tobacco cultivation was the Dutch East Indies government. The Dutch chose to cultivate tobacco in East Sumatra because it was considered to have the natural resources and soil suitable for this cultivation. This study aims to determine the existence of the Deli Sultanate and the history of plantations in East Sumatra before 1864. It also aims to examine the development of tobacco plantations during the Deli Sultanate in East Sumatra between 1864 and 1924, as examined in terms of supply and demand from the European market. This study employed a historical research method consisting of four stages: heuristics, or the collection of primary and secondary sources; criticism, or the selection of sources, consisting of internal and external criticism; interpretation, or the interpretation of sources; and finally, historiography, the process of writing history. Based on the research that has been done, the Deli Malay Sultanate originated from the Aru Kingdom in the 13th century AD, which has played an important role in the history of the development of Medan City, especially since the opening of tobacco plantations in 1863. The reign of Sultan Mahmud Al-Rasyid marked the beginning of the progress of civilization in East Sumatra, with his approval of cooperation with the Dutch, namely Jacobus Nienhuys in the opening of tobacco plantations. High-quality Deli tea brought a significant economic impact, including a surge in demand from the European market in 1865. This development also influenced the social and economic structure of the Deli Sultanate as well as the European market. Modern infrastructure such as the railway and the Belawan port were built as a result of the expansion of tobacco plantations, while foreign companies also invested in the Deli region. The period 1864-1924 was marked by the leadership of Sultan Mahmud Al-Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah and Sultan Makmun Al-Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah where significant progress occurred in various existing fields

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyze the effect of the health level of Islamic Banks as measured by the RGEC method (Risk Profile, Good Corporate Governance, Earnings, and Capital) on the possibility of financial distress. The background of this research is based on global economic uncertainty during the 2019-2023 period and the increasing Non Performing Financing (NPF) and BOPO ratios at Islamic Banks, which indicate potential vulnerability to financial distress. This research uses a descriptive quantitative approach with purposive sampling technique of Islamic Commercial Banks listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange for the period 2021-2024. The data analysis technique includes ranking the RGEC ratio, classical assumption test, and multiple linear regression analysis with the help of SPSS 22 software. The results showed that simultaneously, all RGEC components had a significant effect on financial distress with an F value of 11,596 and a significance of 0.000 and an adjusted R² of 0.672. Partially, the Risk Profile variable measured through NPF (p = 0.012) and FDR (p = 0.002), as well as the Capital variable (CAR) with a significance of 0.000 have a positive and significant effect. Meanwhile, the Good Corporate Governance and Earnings variables (ROA, ROE, and NOM) did not show a significant effect. Thus, it can be concluded that although simultaneously RGEC affects financial distress, partially only Risk Profile and Capital have a significant influence. This finding underscores the importance of strengthening financing risk management and capital in maintaining the financial stability of Islamic banks amid economic dynamics. The implication of this research is as one of the information tools in general for related parties and especially for Islamic bank companies listed on the IDX to maximize risk management, capital strength, managerial strategies, and policy improvements
