The Influence of Socioeconomic Factors and Religiosity on Religious Tolerance Among Students at Indonesian Islamic Higher Education Institutions

    Get PDF
Religious tolerance is fundamental to establishing religious moderation and harmonious life, a critical issue that has garnered considerable attention from researchers and academics in Indonesia. Understanding tolerance requires considering various factors that shape and influence it beyond simple faith dimensions. This study investigates the influence of specific socioeconomic factors and personal religiosity on the religious tolerance levels among Muslim students attending Indonesia’s State Islamic Higher Educational Institutions (PTKIN). Employing a quantitative approach, the research utilizes multiple regression analysis to examine the relative contributions of the independent variables (socioeconomic factors and religiosity) toward religious tolerance. The findings indicate that three out of four socioeconomic aspects, gender, organizational affiliation, and parental income, significantly affect students’ religious tolerance. Conversely, the amount of allowance received was not found to be a significant predictor of tolerance. Crucially, the students’ self-reported personal religiosity did not significantly influence their religious tolerance scores. This suggests that tolerance among PTKIN students is not explained by their individual depth of religious observance or piety level. The study implies that promoting effective religious tolerance within Islamic educational contexts should prioritize strategies that enhance social and economic exposure, particularly through engaging organizational and diverse university-level social activities, rather than focusing solely on increasing religious instruction

Beyond Rhetoric and Resistance: Institutional Pathways of Multiculturalism in Islamic Higher Education

    Get PDF
In an era of increasing cultural and religious diversity, higher education institutions worldwide are under pressure to foster inclusive environments that prepare students for pluralistic societies. This study examines how Islamic higher education in Indonesia navigates multiculturalism by analyzing three institutional cases through the lens of leadership agency, socio-religious context, and institutional culture. Drawing on document analysis, interviews, and classroom observations, the findings reveal three distinct pathways of institutional response. Case A represents a symbolic type in which inclusivity is expressed rhetorically but remains limited to events and public statements. Case B illustrates a substantive type in which multiculturalism is embedded in curricula, mentoring, and campus activities despite minimal rhetorical emphasis. Case C demonstrates a resistant type in which theological orthodoxy and structural homogeneity limit diversity initiatives and reinforce exclusionary practices. Together, these trajectories highlight that meaningful multicultural engagement depends not only on vision statements but also on the alignment of leadership commitment, curricular design, and institutional culture. The study implies that for Islamic education to move beyond rhetoric or resistance, it must embed multicultural values at both structural and cultural levels, thereby preparing students to engage constructively with diversity while remaining grounded in their religious identity

The Foreign Policy of Cultural Heritage: A Constructivist Analysis of Cambodia’s Artefact Repatriation Efforts

    Get PDF
Cambodia’s recent wave of cultural-heritage returns has elevated artefact repatriation from a technical heritage issue to a visible arena of international politics. This article examines why repatriation has become a sustained foreign policy priority for Cambodia and how it has been pursued in practice. The study aims to (1) map the main mechanisms of Cambodia’s repatriation strategy, (2) explain how repatriation is framed as part of post-conflict national identity, and (3) assess its broader significance for cultural sovereignty and development narratives. Methodologically, the article applies a holistic constructivist framework and uses qualitative document-based research combined with process tracing. It draws on scholarly literature, official releases, legal-diplomatic materials, and reputable investigative reporting to reconstruct the interactional pathways through which norms and identity shape policy choices. The findings show that Cambodia’s repatriation agenda is driven less by immediate material gain than by immaterial structures (historical justice, legitimacy, and identity) anchored in a “culture of restoration” centered on Angkor. Cambodia has operationalized this agenda through a hybrid toolkit: mobilizing UNESCO’s 1970 Convention, leveraging bilateral agreements, engaging in legal diplomacy, and cooperating with enforcement and museum actors. These dynamics illustrate norm diffusion and localization, where global frameworks are adapted to reinforce domestic meanings of recovery. The article concludes that Cambodia’s repatriation campaign functions as heritage diplomacy and soft power, offering practical lessons for Global South states and policy implications for museums, provenance governance, and ethical restitution frameworks

    Get PDF
This study explores the persistence of Budi Daya Faith as a form of New Religious Movement (NRM) in Lembang Subdistrict, West Bandung Regency, Indonesia. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation over two years, the research examines how followers of Budi Daya maintain a coherent spiritual system across five dimensions of religiosity: belief in Hyang Tunggal as the Supreme Divine, symbolic ritual practices, oral transmission of sacred knowledge, personal spiritual experience, and ethical consequences in daily life. Despite facing marginalization and state regulatory limitations, the community survives by adapting its doctrine, preserving cultural expressions, and cultivating harmony with nature and society. This study concludes that Budi Daya Faith is not merely an ancestral tradition but a legitimate form of religious identity. It offers valuable insights into religious pluralism, the dynamics of indigenous belief systems, and the urgency of recognizing spiritual expressions outside of state-defined religions
