SLICE OF LIFE FORMULA IN JONAH HILL’S MID90S (2018) FILM

Mid90s (2018), a film directed by Jonah Hill, masterfully employs a slice-of-life formula to depict the coming-of-age of Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in 1990s Los Angeles, abstracting the often-unspoken complexities of adolescence through a series of loosely connected, observational vignettes rather than a traditional linear narrative. The film eschews explicit plot points and grand dramatic arcs, instead immersing the viewer in the mundane yet formative experiences of Stevie\u27s summer: the tentative steps into a new social group of older, rebellious skateboarders, the awkward fumbling with identity and belonging, the casual cruelty and genuine camaraderie within the group, and the subtle shifts in his relationship with his troubled home life. Through extended, unhurried scenes of skateboarding, loitering, and late-night conversations, the film captures the raw, unfiltered essence of youth, where moments of boredom, exhilaration, vulnerability, and fleeting independence coalesce to form the fragmented but deeply impactful mosaic of a boy finding his place in a chaotic world, allowing the audience to intuit the emotional and psychological shifts occurring beneath the surface of everyday interactions

BECOMING THE MAY QUEEN: THE IMAGINARY, THE SYMBOLIC, AND THE REAL IN ARI ASTER’S MIDSOMMAR FILM

This article explores Ari Aster’s Midsommar (2019) through a Lacanian psychoanalytic lens, focusing on the protagonist Dani’s psychological transformation as she navigates trauma, desire, and identity within the framework of Lacan’s tripartite register: the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real. The film, positioned within the realm of popular horror cinema, offers a fertile text for examining how contemporary narratives ritualize and aestheticize psychological breakdowns. Dani’s disintegration following personal loss is restructured through her encounter with the Harga community, which functions as a symbolic order offering both the illusion of belonging and a mechanism of sublimation. Her final acceptance as the May Queen signifies not merely empowerment, but a complex negotiation between desire, repression, and the Other. Through this reading, Midsommar emerges as a modern cultural artifact that stages psychic trauma within the structures of popular visual culture, revealing the entanglements between horror, identity, and symbolic violence

Eco-Relational Khalifah: A Posthumanist Performative Critique on The Modern Qur’an Commentaries

This paper critically examines the construction of modern subjectivity within Islamic discourse, particularly through modern Qur’anic commentaries, and its implications for understanding the concept of “khalīfah.” Modern interpretations often reinforce anthropocentric essentialism, Cartesian dualism, and individual metaphysics, which situate humans as dominators over nonhuman creation, separate the spiritual from the material, and isolate individuals from other subjects. Through an analysis of hermeneutical engagement of prominent modern Muslim exegetes on the Qur’anic concept of khalīfah, this study identifies patterns of anthropocentric essentialism, dualistic thinking, and individual metaphysics in modern understanding of khalīfah. The research then explores how these frameworks limit ecological and relational understandings of khalīfah. In response, this paper proposes a posthumanist and performative reimagining of khalīfah based on relational metaphysics by drawing on contemporary philosophical perspectives. This reinterpretation shifts from human-centered dominion toward a recognition of the dynamic intra-action between human and nonhuman agents, offering a more holistic and ethically responsible interpretation aligned with the Qur’anic vision of interconnected creatio

The Dynamics of Local Government Crisis Communication in the Post-Truth Era: A Case Study of The Land and Building Tax Increase Controversy in Cirebon City

This study analyzes the dynamics of public policy communication in the post-truth era, using the case study of the Land and Building Tax (PBB) increase controversy in Cirebon City in 2024. This study aims to identify government communication strategies, explore the role of media and disinformation, and uncover new findings related to the adaptation of government communication amidst the crisis. A qualitative-descriptive approach was used, using critical discourse analysis techniques for policy documents, online media coverage, and official government statements. Key findings indicate that the government\u27s communication strategy was initially reactive and tended to use a one-way model (Public Information and Two-Way Asymmetrical), which was ineffective in dampening public sentiment. However, public pressure forced the government to reactively shift to a two-way symmetrical communication model, which was realized through the revocation of the Mayoral Regulation (Perwali). This shift occurred not as a proactive choice, but rather as a defensive response to the crisis triggered by the post-truth environment. This report recommends that the government adopt a more proactive and adaptive communication model from the outset to prevent crisis escalation and build sustainable public trust

Consumer Protection Efforts and Innovation for Sustainable Income in Halal MSMEs from the Perspective of Sharia Economic Law: A Case Study of Teh Bunga Sedap Malam

This research examines halal product consumer protection within the framework of Sharia Economic Law while empirically analyzing the role of creativity and innovation in supporting sustainable income among halal-based micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), with a specific focus on Teh Bunga Sedap Malam at Pasar Rembang, Pasuruan. This study adopts a quantitative explanatory research design to identify the causal relationship between creativity, innovation, and income generation. A total of 55 respondents were selected using purposive sampling based on eligibility criteria, and structured questionnaires using a Likert scale were distributed to obtain primary data. The collected data were processed through validity and reliability testing, classical assumption testing, and multiple linear regression analysis to determine the partial and simultaneous influence of creativity and innovation on MSME income. The findings reveal that both creativity and innovation have a positive and significant effect on income, indicating that the ability of MSME actors to develop ideas and transform them into innovative business practices plays a crucial role in enhancing business performance and ensuring financial sustainability. From a Sharia economic perspective, strengthening creativity and innovation must also be aligned with halal assurance, fairness, transparency, and ethical business practices to ensure consumer protection and compliance with Islamic economic values. The study contributes theoretically by integrating empirical income-based analysis with normative Sharia consumer protection principles and practically by providing strategic recommendations for strengthening MSME capacity, regulatory support, and halal awareness. Future research is recommended to expand the sample scope and explore additional determinants influencing MSME sustainability in the halal economic ecosystem

The The Decline of Democracy and Indications of Authoritarianism: A Study of the Dynamics of Contemporary Indonesian Politics: A Study of the Dynamics of Contemporary Indonesian Politics

    No full text
This study examines the phenomenon of democracy in Indonesia after the 1998 reforms, which was marked by a weakening of the substantive quality of democracy and the strengthening of covert authoritarianism. Using a qualitative approach and desk study methods, this study analyzes the dynamics of contemporary Indonesian politics through Robert A. Dahl\u27s theory of polyarchy, Larry Diamond\u27s concept of democratic consolidation, and Andreas Schedler and Nancy Bermeo\u27s framework of electoral authoritarianism. The findings indicate that although democratic procedures, such as elections, remain formally valid, the practices of power tend to be exclusive, repressive, and manipulative. Civic space has been narrowed, criticism of power has been criminalized, and independent oversight institutions have lost their function. This phenomenon indicates a shift toward a hybrid regime, or a formal democracy but authoritarian in substance. To prevent anti-democratic consolidation of power, institutional reform, the enforcement of a just rule of law, and the empowerment of civil society as a countervailing force are necessary. This research is expected to contribute to the academic literature on latent threats to democracy and provide a normative basis for strengthening substantive democracy in Indonesia.

Muhammadiyah as a Model of Transformative Islam in Indonesia

This study aims to examine Muhammadiyah as a contemporary social movement rooted in religion in Indonesia and to explore how its role and influence shape educational institutions. Employing a bibliographic review combined with interviews and supported by historical analysis, this research is grounded in a sociological framework. Through this approach, the presence of Muhammadiyah can be examined scientifically using the perspective of new social movement theory, particularly through resource mobilization theory and identity-based theory. The findings indicate that both theoretical approaches are applicable, with identity-oriented theory taking precedence, followed by resource mobilization analysis. Muhammadiyah is portrayed as an organization that introduces a transformative model within Indonesia’s religiously inspired social movements. Within the framework of identity-oriented theory, Muhammadiyah represents both a collective identity and an ideological foundation. Meanwhile, resource mobilization theory highlights how Islam and Muhammadiyah function as platforms for mobilizing organizational resources, with the primary support originating from its members. Practically, this mobilization is reflected in philanthropic initiatives and the empowerment of Muhammadiyah’s charitable institutions. Previous scholarly works are reaffirmed in this study, demonstrating that Muhammadiyah, as a major Islamic movement, has made a significant contribution to shaping Indonesian society into a more educated and socially conscious community. For this reason, Muhammadiyah can be regarded as a transformative Islamic movement. Ultimately, this article contributes to the discourse on modernist Islamic thought, particularly within the framework of tajdid or Islamic renewal

This study aims to analyze the factors influencing healthcare workers’ compliance with safe injection procedures, focusing on knowledge, attitude, facility availability, and supervision. A quantitative, cross-sectional research method was employed, involving healthcare workers from selected healthcare facilities. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed through inferential statistical tests to identify relationships between variables. The findings revealed that knowledge, attitude, facility availability, and supervision significantly affect healthcare workers’ compliance. The discussion highlights that a combination of internal factors (knowledge and attitude) and external factors (facilities and supervision) forms the foundation of compliance behavior. In conclusion, improving safe injection practices requires comprehensive interventions that encompass competency enhancement, adequate facility provision, and strengthened supervision systems. The study’s contribution lies in providing empirical evidence to inform patient safety policy formulation at both facility and national levels

To Believe or Not to Believe in Absolute Monotheism (Tawhid) is a Personal Choice with Consequences: Binary Messages in Quran’s Verses on Iman and Shahada

The main objective of this article is to interpret a recurring binary message of divine rewards and retributions in two sets of verses about Iman and Shahada. We employ a stratified sampling procedure for retrieving 139 verses on Iman and 44 verses on Shahada from the Quran SmartSearch database available on the islamicity.org website. The research methodology encompasses: (a) content analysis—primarily frequency counts—of original Arabic terms related to Iman and Shahada, and (b) context analysis of selected themes in samples drawn from passages of three or more verses. This study finds that Iman and Shahada are linked through the doctrine of Absolute Monotheism (Tawhid), but they differ in the frequency and nature of binary messages. Compared to significantly higher frequencies of Iman verses, fewer Shahada verses display greater varieties of semantics, derived from their triliteral root (TRS). Shahada verses emphasise testimony to tawhid over binary themes of reward and punishment, whereas Iman verses use simpler language and display greater emphasis on binary messages. Although there is extensive literature on Iman and Shahada, this article offers a new perspective on understanding the nuanced relationship between them. This research contributes a reproducible framework for Quranic thematic studies by combining quantitative frequency analysis with qualitative context interpretation. Substantively, it highlights Shahada\u27s semantic richness for tawhid-centered activities and Iman\u27s straightforward binary messaging, providing hermeneutic insights for fiqh, interfaith dialogue, and gender-/disability-inclusive community empowerment
