A Democratic Media by Zainichi Korean in the Occupation Period -'Choryun News' as a Transboundary Media and a Report of the Atomic Bombs-

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the sprouting and challenges of democratic media in Japan during the era around 1945, when the country was defeated in the Second World War, occupied by the Allied Powers, and its colonies were liberated. General Headquarters (GHQ) had aimed for Japan’s democratization and demilitarization: early democratization programs greatly influenced how the transformation was promoted in Japan’s film industry. During this era, ethnic Koreans residing in Japan (Zainichi Koreans), liberated from colonial rule, began to form their own cultural organizations in various parts of the country. The approaches taken by Nippon Eiga Shinsha and by Zainichi Koreans of Minshu Eigasha during the early stages of democracy are examined. The present paper considers the content of specific video works such as news and documentary films by these film companies.departmental bulletin pape

There are over 10,000 valuable photographic print works created by famous photographers in the SHADAI gallery of Tokyo Polytechnic University. Some works are open to the public, however, many works can not be open because the space of the exhibition hall is limited. Therefore, digital exhibition are expected to provide a new means of displaying the works. It is required in digital exhibition that the digital images should have accurate color reproduction. We report a generation method of the digital photographic print image that considers both the observation lighting environment and the monitor characteristic.departmental bulletin pape

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study were to find the expression of“Method for Thinking”toward Period for Integrated Study and to examine the teacher’s role to express“Method for Thinking”in the classroom discourse. A classroom observation was conducted in the function area focusing on the mathematical inquiry learning of a third-grade (15-year-old age level) class (20 students) at a certain secondary school in Tokyo. A qualitative discourse analysis based on students’ utterances, including students’ rawing pictures on graphs, was done. In light of the findings, this study suggests that teacher’s roles to express“Method for Thinking”were formalizing the classroom discourse to lead the student to understand the mathematical thinking and to let the student participate in such a classroom discourse.departmental bulletin pape

Italian director Paolo Virzi’s latest film The Leisure Seeker is based on the book by American writer Michael Zadoorian. The original novel tells a story of the American old couple’s travel to Disneyland in L.A. through route 66, which is described as “mother road” in Steinbeck famous novel The Grapes of Wrath. Virzi changed their goal instead of L.A to Hemingway Museum in Miami, thus husband with dementia and wife with the terminal cancer drive their camping car along route 1. On the road, they repeat to loose and to find each other again. Like Viaggio in Italia by Roberto Rossellini, and Dubliners by James Joyce, the insane husband has acute jealousy to wife’s ex-boy-friend. Although his madness reveals that he was unfaithful to his wife, his confession demonstrates his true love for her. It is an epiphany moment that the reason Virzi abandoned the route 66, which shows us the American spirits of immigrants.departmental bulletin pape

Vinegar syndrome is a term used to describe the chemical phenomenon that occurs during the deterioration of cellulose acetate (CA) base motion-picture film, the symptoms of which are a vinegar odor, film shrinkage, embrittlement, buckling of the gelatin emulsion, and the formation of a white precipitate on the film surface. Cellulose triacetate (TAC), which contains no free hydroxyl groups (DS = 3.0) is a typical CA derivative and is used as the base material for photographic films, motionpicture films, and microfilms since the 1920s as a replacement for the unstable and highly flammable cellulose nitrate base film. Although standard storage conditions for TAC base films have been established over recent decades, chemical analysis of the degradation products have not been clarified, and no specific diagnostic technique has been developed. We focused on the complete chemical analysis of the films. We attempted to identify the additives and the structure of films based on results from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The average of degree of substitution (DS) can be decided using only 3 mg of film using NMR method under high temperature in dimethyl sulfoxide solution.departmental bulletin pape

Art Production by Use of Leap Motion ― Focused on Grabbing and Releasing Objects by Hands in the Virtual Space ―

    Get PDF
A hand gesture input device, called Leap Motion, has been utilized in virtual reality artworks since 2012 to capture hand and finger motions, with comparatively reliable precision. The device detects all the coordinates of the finger joints, as well as the positions of both palms and wrists in real time. Although many implementations have been proposed, some difficulties remain for grabbing or releasing 3D objects with the virtual fingers. Each of the fingers as well as the palms has its own collider, to detect collisions with objects, but sometimes it simply bumps against objects, pushing away them, unable to hold objects stably in the palms. I attach an inner collider and an outer trigger to an object to interact with finger-tip triggers for smoothly grabbing and releasing the object.departmental bulletin pape

A discourse analytical study of other initiated repair in Small Talk in ELF:Between Indian participants and Japanese participants

    Get PDF
This discourse analytical study focuses on ELF (English as a lingua franca) interactions in intercultural setting to see how the participants from different background actually act in ELF interactions. The data used is the videotaped conversation data of six groups between Japanese and Indians where ELF is used in social conversation. All of the data are the first meeting conversations. The Japanese participants work in Japanese companies in India. They were transferred from their headquarters in Japan. Indian business people work in Japanese companies or have experiences working with Japanese business people. All of the data were recorded in Bangalore, India. The total length of the data is about three hours. As for their L1 (fist language), the Japanese participants’ L1 is Japanese. Indian participants’ L1 varies, such as Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi and Malayalam. Although Indian participants’ language and socio-cultural background varies, they seem to be accustomed to ELF situations among themselves. They know that they have vocabulary differences and grammar difference according to the person in their ordinary interactions in English. However, for Japanese participants, they are often confused because they face English which sometimes does not conform to the norms of Inner Circle English which were taught at school before coming to India. The research questions are: 1) what is difficult for each participant? and 2) how they overcome the difficulty? The discourse analysis of the first-time meeting shows repair questions are used effectively. It is found that Indian people converged on Japanese whose turns were very short. Both Japanese and Indian people always check what the other participants are saying. Doing so, both Japanese people and Indian people put priority in maintaining social relationships as well as communicative effectiveness than the correct forms of English. The data analysis also indicates length of overseas experience of Japanese participants. The study also compares the participants whose overseas experience are long (more than 10 years) and whose experience are short (less than 3 years). Participants whose experience is long shows more advanced intercultural skills for dealing with discourse pattern differences.departmental bulletin pape
