Moral Equality – Aesthetic Supremacy: The East in the Cocharelli Manuscript
ABSTRACT: The paper discusses the ambiguous attitudes toward Mongol and Muslim culture in the Cocharelli manuscript. It argues that the imagery was supposed to teach the Cocharelli children that vices knew no cultural boundaries. Rather than suggesting any moral superiority of Western culture, the miniatures raised awareness of human susceptibility to evil and its destructive consequences in general. While the manuscript’s iconography thus aims at manifesting equality among cultures, its aesthetics reveals a reverence for the visual as well as material opulence of the East. RIASSUNTO: Sulla base della bibliografia esistente e degli epistolari antichi, editi o in corso di stampa, l’articolo tenta di precisare quante e quali edizioni di Ausiàs March Gian Vincenzo Pinelli – umanista e bibliofilo del XVI secolo, napoletano ma vissuto per lo più a Padova – riuscì a procurarsi. Si proverà inoltre a seguirne le sorti attraverso il processo di dispersione che interessò la ricchissima biblioteca padovana a partire dagli ultimi mesi della sua vita.PAROLE-CHIAVE: Ricezione italiana di Ausiàs March nel Cinquecento - Gian Vincenzo Pinelli - Jacopo Corbinelli - Claude Dupuy - Biblioteca Pinelli ABSTRACT: On the basis of the existing bibliography and ancient collections of letters, published or in print, the article attempts to specify how many and which editions of Ausiàs March Gian Vincenzo Pinelli – a sixteenth-century Neapolitan humanist and bibliophile who mostly lived in Padua – managed to obtain. La fortune du «Livre des sept sages de Rome» à travers sa tradition textuelle: quelques remarques autour de la tradition du «Dolopathos» et de la «Historia septem sapientum»
Résumé : Le Livre des sept sages de Rome (Lss) est l'une des œuvres les plus lues et diffusées au Moyen Âge. Pourtant, les contextes de réception de ce recueil n'ont été explorés qu'en partie et de façon non systématique. L'objet de notre contribution consiste à ébaucher une méthodologie autour de la diffusion du texte, en se concentrant notamment sur le Dolopathos et sur la tradition latine du Lss : l’objectif est de mener une enquête plus large, capable d'éclaircir les mécanismes de propagation des variantes du texte au-delà des limites géographiques, chronologiques et linguistiques.Mots-clés: Sept sages - Dolopathos - Manuscrits - Recueils - Réception Abstract: The Book of the Seven Sages (Lss) was one of the most widespread texts of the Middle Ages. Nevertheless its reception and fruition have been only partially studied and deserve a more systematic approach. The goal of this contribution is to outline a history of the reception of the Seven Sages by focussing the attention on the Dolopathos and on the latin Lss textual tradition.
