    Effect of Pineapple Juice (Ananas comosus) on Surface Roughness of Preheated and Non-Preheated Nanohybrid Composite Resins

      Introduction: Nanohybrid composite resins is a type of composite consisting 2 different filler sizes, where one filler ranges in nanoparticles 0.01-0.05µm. Pineapple juice (Ananas comosus) is a widely consumed drink by Indonesian with pH range 3.5-4.6. Surface roughness may be affected by extrinsic factors such as low pH from pineapple juice. Rough surface can cause bacterial adhesion and plaque accumulation on restorative material which cause secondary caries, gingivitis and staining. Preheating is a preparation method of composite which improve composite physical and mechanical properties. Objective: To analyze the difference in surface roughness of preheated and non-preheated nanohybrid composite resins after immersion in pineapple juice. Methods: This research was a laboratory experimental with post-test and control group design. Thirty-three cylindrical sample of nanohybrid composite resin Filtek Z250 XT A2 shade (3M ESPE) (10 mm x 2 mm) were divided into 3 groups: Preheated, Non-preheated and control. Preheated and non-preheated group were immersed in 10 mL pineapple juice for 2 hours for 12 days, control group were immersed in 10 mL distilled water for 24 hours for 12 days. Surface roughness was measured after immersion using surface roughness tester Taylor Hobson, Subtonic S-100 Series-S128) and analyzed using one way ANOVA followed by Post Hoc Tukey. Results: Statistical analyze with one way ANOVA test indicates significant differences between surface roughness in 3 groups with p = 0.034, average surface roughness of pre-heated group was calculated in 0.73 µm, non-preheated group in 0.81 µm and control group in 0.55µm. Tukey’s Post hoc with p = 0.03 shows significant difference in surface of non-preheated composite resin with control group. Conclusion: Pineapple juice increases surface roughness of nanohybrid composite resins after 2 hours immersion for 12 days in comparison with control group

    The accuracy of extraoral periapical radiography on determining the working length in endodontic treatment: narrative review

    Objectives: This review article is aimed to determine the accuracy of extraoral periapical radiography as a determinant of the working length in endodontic treatment and the advantages and disadvantages of this technique. Review: Endodontic treatment is a dental treatment for damages reaching the pulp which aims to maintain the tooth. One way to succeed in endodontic treatment is to determine an accurate working length. The working length can be determined by intraoral periapical radiography examination but some people are sensitive to intraoral film placement. The placement of film on periapical radiography extraorally is needed. Conclusion: The study showed that the extraoral periapical radiography had more than 75% accuracy in determining the working length depending on angulation used. This review concludes that extraoral periapical radiography can be used in patients who can not tolerate to intraoral film placement with an accuracy that is not significantly different from that of the intraoral periapical radiography but is not meant to be replaced intraoral periapical radiography

    The Effect of Horn Beetle Nanochitosan (Xylotrupes gideon) Addition on The Hardness of Glass-ionomer Cement

      Introduction: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a tooth-colored restorative material that is often used by clinical practitioners because it can release fluoride, is easy to apply to teeth and has minimal preparation techniques. The erosion and moisture-sensitive nature of GIC becomes a problem for a long-lasting aesthetic restoration. Therefore, modifications were made to improve its mechanical properties by adding nanochitosan (NCH) from horn beetle (Xylotrupes gideon). Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of adding horn beetle nanochitosan to GIC liquid on the surface hardness and compared with conventional GIC. Methods: Forty cylindrical samples of GIC (GC Fuji® IX Extra, Tokyo-Japan, Lot 1912201) with a diameter of 4 mm and a thickness of 6 mm were divided into 4 groups, namely the GIC control group, GIC modified with 0.5wt%, 1wt%, 2 wt% nanochitosan. Each sample was immersed in artificial saliva for 24 hours and 7 days. Surface hardness before and after immersion was tested using a Vickers Microhardness tester (Shimadzu, Japan). The data were analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis test to determine the effect of horn beetle nanochitosan addition and the Wilcoxon Signed-Ranked test to determine the effect of immersion time on GIC surface hardness. Results: The Kruskal Wallis statistical test showed significant difference (p<0.05) between the control group and the 24 hours treatment group with the addition of 2wt% nanochitosan, which was the highest surface hardness value (133.1 ± 49.0 HV), followed by 1wt% (127.4 ± 25.5 HV) and 0.5wt% (117.7 ± 22.5 HV). The Wilcoxon Signed-Ranked test statistic also showed a significant difference (p<0.05) between the 24-hour and 7-day immersion time with the surface hardness value at 24 hours immersion greater than 7 days. Conclusion: The addition of 0.5wt%, 1wt% and 2wt% horn beetle nanochitosan can increase the GIC surface hardness value.   ABSTRAK Pendahuluan: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) merupakan bahan restorasi sewarna gigi yang sering digunakan oleh praktisi klinis karena dapat melepaskan fluor, mudah diaplikasikan pada gigi, dan memiliki teknik preparasi yang minimal. Erosi dan sifat sensitif kelembaban dari GIC menjadi masalah untuk restorasi estetika yang tahan lama. Oleh karena itu, dilakukan modifikasi untuk meningkatkan sifat mekaniknya dengan menambahkan nanokitosan (NCH) dari kumbang tanduk (Xylotrupes gideon). Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh penambahan nanokitosan kumbang tanduk ke dalam cairan GIC terhadap kekerasan permukaan dan dibandingkan dengan Semen Ionomer Kaca (SIK) konvensional. Metode: Empat puluh sampel silinder GIC (GC Fuji® IX Extra, Tokyo-Japan, Lot 1912201) dengan diameter 4 mm dan ketebalan 6 mm dibagi menjadi 4 kelompok, yaitu kelompok kontrol GIC, GIC dimodifikasi dengan nanokitosan 0,5wt%, 1 wt%, 2wt%. Setiap sampel direndam dalam saliva buatan selama 24 jam dan 7 hari. Kekerasan permukaan sebelum dan sesudah perendaman diuji menggunakan Vickers Microhardness tester. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji Kruskal Wallis untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan nanokitosan kumbang tanduk dan uji Wilcoxon Signed-Ranked untuk mengetahui pengaruh waktu perendaman terhadap kekerasan permukaan GIC. Hasil: Uji statistik Kruskal Wallis menunjukkan perbedaan bermakna (p<0,05) antara kelompok kontrol dan kelompok perlakuan perendaman 24 jam dengan penambahan nanokitosan 2wt% yang merupakan nilai kekerasan permukaan tertinggi (133,1 ± 49,0 HV), diikuti sebesar 1wt% (127,4 ± 25,5 HV) dan 0,5% (117,7 ± 22,5 HV). Statistik uji Wilcoxon Signed-Ranked juga menunjukkan perbedaan yang nyata (p<0,05) antara lama perendaman 24 jam dan 7 hari dengan nilai kekerasan permukaan pada perendaman 24 jam lebih besar dari 7 hari. Kesimpulan: Penambahan nanokitosan kumbang tanduk 0,5wt%, 1% , dan 2wt% dapat meningkatkan nilai kekerasan permukaan GIC

    Comparative analysis of impacted maxillary canine and dentigerous cyst diagnosis using panoramic and CBCT imaging

    Objectives: This report is aimed to compare diagnostic accuracy of impacted maxillary canine and dentigerous cyst in determining its dimension and position using panoramic and CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) imaging. Case Report: A 30-year-old woman was referred to Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology with the suspect of upper right impacted canine. She had chief complaint of swelling pain in the palate for ± 3 months. Panoramic showed 13 impacted superiorly to the maxillary sinus and surrounding with a radiolucent lesion attached on cementoenamel junction. However, panoramic has limitations in assessing the labio-palatal position of impacted canine and lesion extension. CBCT revealed the tooth located closer to palate and no sign of direct contact with sinus. The radiolucent lesion has destructed anteroposterior aspect of cortical plate which explain the reason of swelling and pain. Conclusion: Precise dimension and position are important to avoid mistakes since impacted maxillary canine accompanied with dentigerous cyst required invasive management. In our case, panoramic and CBCT contributed to guide the diagnosis and help the referrer determining the exact site of surgery

    Distribution of dense bone island in the jaw based on the classification of radiopaque areas and their location on panoramic radiographs

    Objectives: This study is aimed to find out the distribution of DBI in the jaw based on the classification of radiopaque areas and their location using panoramic radiographs at RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga Surabaya. Materials and Methods: This research was a descriptive observational study with total sampling method. The study used secondary data from panoramic radiographs at the RSKGMP Airlangga University Surabaya during 2018–2021, which had a DBI appearance, and analyzed them based on the classification of radiopaque areas and locations. The results of the analysis are then presented in the form of tables and pie charts. Results: Classification of DBI based on radiopaque areas was found in type 5 separate (47.81%), type 4 apical (29.82%), type 3 apical and interradicular (17.54%), type 1 interradicular (3.07%), and the least in type 2 interradicular and separate (1.75%). The most common locations of the lesions were in the premolar region (42.54%), the molar region (27.63%), the canine region (12.28%), the canine-premolar region (8.33%), the premolar-molar region (6.58%), and the least common location in the incisor and incisor-canine regions (1,32%). Conclusion: Classification of DBI based on the most common radiopaque area was found to be type 5 separate, with the most lesion locations in the premolar region. While the least classification was found in type 2 interradicular and separate, the incisive and incisive-canine regions had the fewest lesion locations. &nbsp

    The Effect of Polishing Techniques on Color Change of Nanofill Composite Resin Immersed in Green Tea (Camellia sinensis)

      Introduction: Nanofill composite resin with its filler particle 0.005-0.1 µm can have better polishing result so that as a restoration it is more resistant towards staining that is susceptible to occur by the exposure to food and beverage. Polishing is done to improve the color stability of composite resin. Polishing techniques can be divided into one-step technique and multi-step technique. One of the staining agents, green tea tannin can cause discoloration in composite restoration. Objective: This research determine the effect of polishing techniques on the color change of nanofill composite resin after green tea immersion. Methods: The sample used was nanofill composite resin with the diameter of 10 mm and thickness of 2 mm. Samples were divided into 2 groups, 10 samples with one-step polishing technique and 10 samples with multi-step polishing technique. Samples were soaked in distilled water for 24 hours at 37oC and initial color measurements were taken. The treatment was given by immersing the samples in  green tea solution for 5x24 hours at 37°C incubator. Measurements of the samples final color after the treatment were done after the fifth day. Results: One-step and multi-step polishing techniques affect the overall color value of the nanofill composite resin after treatment. The multi-step technique group had lower overall color value than the one-step technique (p=0.00). There were significant differences in the L, C, and H values after treatment with one-step and multi-step groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The multi-step polishing technique produced better roughness reduction with the result that less color change

      Candida sp. are eukaryotic opportunistic pathogens that reside on the mucosa oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, vagina and sometimes skin. An infection caused by Candida is termed candidiasis or candidosis. Oral candidiasis is a common opportunistic infection of the oral cavity caused by overgrowth of Candida species, the most common being Candida albicans. Risk factor for oral candidiasis are local factors, systemic factors and the physiological states. The most commonly used classes of antifungal drug treatment to Candida infections are the azole, polyenes and echinocandins. However, the management of Candida infections faces many problems, such as toxicity, resistance of Candida to antifungal drugs, relapse to Candida infection and the high cost of antifungal drugs. Many investigators are exploiting alternative therapeutic strategies to overcome problems treating candidiasis. Stevia leaves extracts has been known to have antifungal activity to treat candidiasis. The aim of this review article is to explain antifungal potency of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni leaves extracts toward Candida albicans.     Dental and Oral Health Status of Elementary School Children in Central Lampung

      Introduction: Dental caries and gingivitis are the most prevalent oral health problems in Indonesian elementary school children. Predictors that are significantly associated with dental caries and gingivitis in children are the parents’ socioeconomic status and children’s oral health behavior. Terbanggi Besar district is the largest area and population in Lampung Province. The lack of updated dental and oral health data needs to be refined to address oral health disparities and achieve improvements. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the dental and oral health status of grade V and VI elementary school children in Terbanggi Besar district, Central Lampung. Method: This cross-sectional study elected 410 students from 5 public elementary schools using convenience sampling. Sociodemographic and oral health behavior data were retrieved from a self-administered questionnaire. In addition, a clinical examination consisted of the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index, the Gingival Index (GI), and the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHIS). The Mann-Whitney statistical test was used to analyze the differences in dental caries severity and gingival status between selected variables. Results: Dental caries was present in 75.6% of children, while gingivitis was present in 52% of children. The mean DMFT score was significantly higher in children with poor oral hygiene (2.80 + 2.67, p = 0.001). The mean GI score was significantly higher in children aged 12 years old or above (0.37 + 0.48, p = 0.025) and in those that had unemployed fathers (0.25 + 0.29, p = 0.030) and poor oral hygiene (0.31 + 0.40, p = 0.000). Conclusion: Improving dental and oral health promotion with regard to elementary school children is highly recommended. The dental and oral health status of grade V and VI elementary school children in Terbanggi Besar district in Central Lampung was found to be moderate, with a high prevalence of dental caries

    Oral Health Effects of Antipsychotic Agents on Residents in a Psychiatric Facility in Medan, Indonesia

      Introduction: Antipsychotic agents consumed by patients with mental illnesses can have adverse effects on the oral health. These effects include altering the composition and flow of saliva, thus reducing its protective capabilities, which, in turn, increases the risk of caries. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effects of antipsychotic drug use on salivary pH, salivary flow rate, and caries incidence on psychiatric inpatients in Pemenang Jiwa Foundation, Medan, Indonesia. Methods: This was an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design. The sample population comprised male and female residents in Pemenang Jiwa Foundation. The population was selected through purposive sampling, which yielded 51 participants. Usage of antipsyhotics were categorized based on the duration (3-6 months, 6 months to 3 years, >3 years) and the number of daily drug consumption (1, 2, 3, >3). Oral manifestations evaluated were salivary flow rate, pH, and DMFT. Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests were used to analyze the association between the consumption of antipsychotic agents and salivary pH, salivary flow rate, and caries incidence. Results: There were 28 females and 23 males with a mean age of 41 years old were included in the study. More than half of the respondents (51%) had consumed antipsychotic medications daily for between 6 months and 3 years. Fewer than half of the respondents (45.1%) consumed more than three types of antipsychotic medications. There was a significant association between the quantity of antipsychotic agents consumed daily and salivary pH (p=0.007), salivary flow rate (p=0.0001), and caries incidence (p=0.006). Only the duration of antipsychotic drug use and not the number of antipsychotic drugs consumed daily was associated with salivary pH (p=0.014). Conclusion: The quantity and duration of use of antipsychotic agents affects salivary pH, salivary flow rate, and caries incidence
