Psychosocial Outcomes of Orthopedic Injuries: An Analysis of the Relationship Between the Athlete and the Athletic Trainer

    Get PDF
An analysis on the impact of the level of social support from athletic trainers on the outcomes of orthopedic injuries in athletes. The foundational model for this research is Wiese-Bjornstal’s Integrated Model (1998). This model examines the effect of athletes’ emotional responses on their recovery. Social support from the athletic trainer can help mediate negative emotional responses and encourage positive emotional responses, which is why social support is crucial to recovery. Athletes with higher levels of perceived social support from their athletic trainers had more success with rehabilitation. This report consists of a review of the existing literature on psychosocial outcomes of orthopedic injuries and social support, as well as an inductive analysis of three interviews with student-athletes at Division III Bridgewater College. In examining the existing data and the present study, three major implications for practical application can be drawn. These implications include the athletic trainers’ need for communication skills, athletes’ perceptions of athletic trainers’ experience, and social support from the athletic trainer as a necessity

Identification and Quantification of Atrazine in the North River Using SPE and HPLC

    Get PDF
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is utilized for the separation, purification, and quantification of viscous and complex analyte mixtures. It is important in that it can analyze and detect low analyte concentrations, which can be useful in many industries, such as food and pharmaceutical industries, as well analyzing environmental samples. The purpose of this project was to identify and quantitate atrazine, an herbicide, in a water sample from the North River (Bridgewater, VA) using solid-phase extraction (SPE) and HPLC

PNE – Lots of Talk, Superficial Results

    Get PDF
Objective: A narrative review (NR) of meta-analyses (MA) and systematic reviews (SR) that assess the effectiveness or efficacy of pain neuroscience education (PNE) on various outcome measures in individuals with chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. Methods: This was a mixed methodology review involving systematic searches across 4 databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, CENTRAL (Cochrane), and Google Scholar). Inclusion criteria stipulated MAs and SRs that assessed the effectiveness or efficacy of PNE on CP population. Quantitative eligibility criteria included randomized controlled trials (RCTs), adults (18+ years of age), English or Spanish speaking individuals, and reporting of chronic pain (persistent or recurrent pain lasting ≥ 3 months). Qualitative eligibility criteria included individuals reporting chronic pain and experienced a PNE intervention. Two reviewers screened 9,760 articles via COVIDENCE. 11 reviews met inclusion criteria and underwent full text review, specifically examining methodology and outcomes. Conclusions: This narrative review, including 11 reviews, emphasizes the need for further research pertaining to the efficacy and effectiveness of PNE utilization in healthcare. Each of these reviews are laced with varying levels of heterogeneity or low-quality evidence. Additionally, it remains unknown which information is pertinent to be included with PNE to achieve desired outcomes and belief reconceptualization. This is the result of a lack of thorough research and evaluation of PNE due to its recent establishment within healthcare. An updated systematic review should be performed that includes recently published literature with broad inclusion criteria to obtain a full-picture perspective of PNE

Genetic Testing for Non-Major Biology Students

    Get PDF
The goal of this Honors Project is to teach non-major biology students (BIOL-100) the concept of genetic testing and the importance of interpreting genetic results. I created a lab manual, a PowerPoint presentation, and quiz assessments to help students easily understand the material while also performing lab techniques that are crucial to scientific research. This is a two-week lab where students will test their own DNA and interpret the results using PCR and gel electrophoresis. In the lab at school, students cannot obtain real genetic results because the lab focuses on a portion of the genome that is not used to create proteins in the body; therefore, it is completely safe for college laboratories under GINA. While performing the lab, I presented a presentation that shows what real genetic results can look like and why it is important for students to understand genetics at a foundational level. The main goal of this project is to stress that the field of genetics is growing exponentially with new technology and the likelihood of individuals receiving genetic testing in their lifetime is extremely high
