The Concert System in Interwar Europe
During the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the Concert of Europe was developed as a system to prevent another continent-wide war. The Concert was used in diplomatic interactions until July 1914. The Concert was the foundation for the negotiations that attempted, but failed, to avert the First World War. The Concerts failure signified its collapse as a diplomatic system. But the Concert only disappeared in name. In practice, it was used throughout the negotiations of the interwar era, which ultimately resulted in the Second World War. This paper examines seven conferences from the interwar years where the Concert was used. These include (1) the Paris Peace Conference and the creation of the League of Nations, (2) the 1921 Washington Naval Conference, (3) the Locarno Pact, (4) the 1933 Disarmament Conference, (5) the Stresa Pact, (6) the Five Power Conference, and (7) the Munich Conference with a focus on appeasement. In each of these interwar meetings, key tenets of the Concert were present even though the system had supposedly been discarded after the First World War
Using Satellites to Map the Urban Heat Island to Inform Harrisonburg and Bridgewater Public Policy
The Urban Heat Island effect (UHI) is a phenomenon where urban centers are hotter than their surrounding rural counterparts. Ever since it was first discovered there have been a variety of methods of mapping this effect from using terrestrial sensors to satellites. This study attempts to evaluate different mapping methods, specifically two different satellite methods (ECOSTRESS and MODIS). As well as a community driven mapping method that involved terrestrial sensors attached to cars. This study then discusses remedies to the UHI and documents efforts to remedy it through a partnership between researchers, the community, and the city of Harrisonburg as well as future efforts that are slated to be completed
Using Cyclic-Step Chronopotentiometry to Explore Electron Mobility in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
In this project, we are making dye-sensitized solar cells using titanium dioxide and the dye from raspberries. We are exploring how electrons diffuse through these systems. To do this, we perform cyclic chronopotentiometry where we cycle between periods of applying a voltage to achieve a certain current and periods where the current is stopped. We focus on the time-dependent decay of the voltage when the current is stopped and fit these decays with a bi-exponential model. We compare the results of devices with and without lithium perchlorate in the electrolyte solution since lithium lowers the energies of the acceptor states in the titanium dioxide film. We also are looking at the difference between 1 and 2 minute cycles to investigate potential hysteresis effects
