This article will examine the life of Şahin Kuruçaylı in three stages: his life in Greece before fleeing, the challenges he faced during the migration process, and his experiences after arriving in Turkey, including the process of becoming a Turkish citizen. Kuruçaylı, originally from a village in Gümülcine (Komotini), attempted to escape to Turkey twice and succeeded on his second attempt in 1969. The diplomatic relations between Greece and Turkey in the 1960s will be explored, with a focus on whether these relations influenced minorities to emigrate. Despite being sent back after his first attempt, Kuruçaylı remained determined. The main reasons behind his persistence will be clarified, including the socio-political structure of Greece, internal unrest, the rule of the Colonels’ Junta, and the uprising in Turkey against Greeks living there. The article will explain how these events impacted Greek-Turkish relations and their effects on minority communities. Finally, it will examine in detail his adaptation process after migrating to Turkey.by Abdurrahim Öze

However, solar conversion to chemical energy is heavily dependent on rare-earth metal-based photosensitizers and catalysts. Thus, it is necessary to build photocatalytic dyads that consist of first-row transition metals. However, Fe(II) polypyridyls, unlike their Ru(II) and Ir(III) analogues, show weak octahedral field splitting, which changes the photophysics to be unfavorable for catalysis. In this thesis, we focused on coupling metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) states with metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) states to improvethe water oxidation catalytic activityof Prussian blue analogue(PBA) based photocatalysts. We first synthesised two of the most commonly studied Fe(II) polypyridyls, Fe(bpy)2(CN)2 and K2Fe(bpy)(CN)4. Then we coupled these chromophores with [Co(bpy)(H2O)n]2+ and [Zn(bpy)(H2O)n]2+ groups to prepare FeCo and FeZn compounds. FeZn compounds are used as a reference to investigate Fe cyanopolypyridyls in a network system since Zn ions are not expected to exhibit MMCT. With FeCo systems, it isaimed to investigate the role of the MMCT on the decay dynamics of the MLCT process. Characterization studies show that the local environment of Fe sites is affected by the coordination of Co and Zn ions to the cyanide bridge, resulting in a stabilization of the t2g and eg levels. We performed a series of photocatalytic experiments revealing that the highest catalytic activity is achieved for systems that possess MMCT processes directly coupled with the MLCT process through cyanide bridging group. Ultrafast transient absorption experiments indicate that the photophysics of the MLCT process is significantly different in Fe and FeCo compounds since 5MC is stabilized in energy compared to the 3MC state, and MMCT serves as an alternate relaxation pathway for the excited MLCT state. Finally, we combined our experimental findings to establish Jablonski diagrams for Fe, FeZn, and FeCo compounds and further proposed a mechanism for the photocatalytic water oxidation process. This thesis indicates that the cyanide bridge could provide an ideal platform to couple different charge transfer processes due to its rigid and short nature. The results also suggest that combining charge transfer processes could be a viable pathway to favor the decay dynamics of MLCT states for photocatalytic applications.by Hüseyin Orhun Tunçe

To address this, we developed a mathematical optimization model for brain tumor resection problem that aims to preserve network efficiency as much as possible by resecting a predefined volume of tumor. Network efficiency is quantified using the Global Efficiency (GE) metric. The model includes spatial contiguity constraints to ensure that the resected area forms a clinically realistic connected region. To improve computational efficiency and scalability, we proposed enhanced formulations and introduced an aggregation heuristic that groups nodes that are physically closer to each other, significantly reducing solution time while maintaining high-quality results. For the experimental analysis, we used real brain network data representing healthy white and gray matter regions and generated synthetic tumor instances and modeled their disruptive impact on the brain network. We first validated the performance of the aggregation heuristic by comparing it against the original model. Results show that the heuristic drastically reduces computational time while achieving comparable GE values. We then investigated the impact of tumor size and found that larger tumors disrupt the network more severely even before resection, and lead to lower GE values post-resection at the same threshold levels. Then, we examined the impact of tumor location and observed that centrally located tumors lead to greater decreases in GE compared to peripheral tumors when the same tumor volume is removed. Finally, using a real tumor instance, we compared the ”best” resection guided by our model with the ”worst” resection, and demonstrated that our approach leads to significantly better preservation of brain network efficiency.by Sena Aslı Bozkur

Cataloged from PDF version of article.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 78-90).In a world that demands sustainable transformation, achieving environmental goals depends not just on how organizations set strategies but on how employees put those goals into practice. This thesis explores how behavioral interventions, particularly nudges, can bridge this gap by supporting environmental decision-making within organizational contexts. Drawing from behavioral science and corporate social responsibility literature, the study focuses on two key features of nudges: transparency and frequency. Through a 2x2 between-subjects vignette experiment involving 228 business undergraduates, the research investigates how these design attributes influence support for sustainable choices in the workplace. In addition to behavioral outcomes, it investigates the psychological mechanisms of perceived threat to freedom and anger as potential mediators. The findings reveal that while nudges significantly increased environmental decision-making, neither transparency nor frequency produced significant effects when individual differences were controlled. Instead, pro-environmental attitudes were the strongest predictor of sustainable choices, suggesting that personal values matter more than how nudges are framed or repeated. This highlights the importance of tailoring behavioral interventions to audience characteristics rather than relying solely on structural adjustments to the nudge itself. By highlighting the emotional and contextual dynamics of behavioral design, this study contributes to both theoretical and practical understanding of how organizations can foster sustainable behavior ethically and effectively.by Mervegül Özdemi

Cataloged from PDF version of article.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 108-117).This study examines autobiographical graphic novels, an emerging narrative form in Turkish literature, through the works of female artists. It explores how women have embraced this narrative form, expanded its boundaries, and conveyed their life stories through this hybrid medium from a feminist perspective. These narratives often center not only on the women themselves but also on their mothers, daughters, or grandmothers, as they depict bodies, memories, and personal histories. In doing so, they move beyond the conventions of classical autobiography, opening up a new expressive space in which gender-based experiences gain visibility. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that includes visual arts, literature, and communication studies, the thesis is framed by literary sociology, feminist criticism, graphic narrative theory, and narratology. Using qualitative textual and visual analysis, the study evaluates selected works by Özge Samancı, Gökçe Yavaş Önal, Aslı Alpar, and Burcu Türker in terms of their narrative techniques, themes, and visual language. The analysis reveals recurring themes such as the body, memory, family, mother-daughter relationships, intergenerational experience, social pressure, and female solidarity. These themes show how personal stories gain political meaning through drawing. Including artists in foreign contexts suggests a transnational narrative beyond Turkish literature. By focusing on an underexplored area in Türkiye, this thesis offers a fresh contribution to literary studies. It argues that women use graphic life narratives to express experience and develop critical discourse against patriarchal storytelling, positioning this hybrid medium as artistic and political expression.by Elif Gülendam Değirmenc

Cataloged from PDF version of article.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 85-93).This thesis analyzes how states’ conception of the regional leadership role is translated into foreign policy behavior in the Middle East. By taking its theoretical framework from role theory, the thesis hypothesizes that states’ national role conceptions can help shape their foreign policy behavior, as they can provide guidelines for long-term patterns of conduct in foreign affairs. Based on this initial hypothesis, the thesis further argues that aspiring states will likely engage in regional conflicts, as they can create opportunities to enact the role of regional leadership. In pursuit of this foreign policy role, states are also expected to implement particular foreign policy decisions that can help reflect the state’s influence at the regional level. In order to analyze the relationship between regional leadership roles and their performance by states, the case study method is used in this thesis. The two case studies conducted in this project are on Saudi and Egyptian foreign policy behaviors in the Syrian civil war during the 2011-2016 period, and secondary data on the national role conceptions of these states during this period are driven by the data collected by Akbaba and Özdamar (2019). The results of this thesis help contribute to the literature on foreign policy analysis and role theory focused on the Middle East, while also having policy-wise implications for foreign policy decision makers.by Zehra Gökçe Şeno
