Proust in the light of Freud – Merleau-Ponty’s reading

I attempt to approach in a short way how Merleau-Ponty, differing from the French tradition, reads Proust in the light of Freud, what allows him to insist on a fundamental problem of his phenomenology: the temporality. To deal with this, I will perform an inquiry of the possible intersection of the case of the phantom limb with the notion of sedimentation described by the philosopher. With this proceeding, we will understand Merleau-Ponty’s appeal to Proust’s written, specially to his concept of “time”. We will realize, however, that this appeal is largely in interface with notions of Freud’s clinic

Heidegger and Leibniz- the openness of the concept of monad

Esta discussão intenta demonstrar as possibilidades de compreensão do conceito de mônada partindo das reflexões de Heidegger sobre A determinação do Ser do Ente segundo LeibnizThis paper handles the heideggerian reflection on the concept of monad in Leibniz and its determinations. The comments that Heidegger does about the being from the leibnizian thought promotes a fundamental openness of the monad, bringing with it, among other consequences, the perspectivism and the idea of the beings as pulsion. The monad’s ontological limitation and its capacity to move from itself result in a notion of representation and delimitate the beings’s contours. The aim of this discussion is to demonstrate the possibilities of comprehension of the conception of monad taking as starting point Heidegger’s reflections in ‘From the last Marburg lecture course’

    The vision as openness

This text intends to do a short comment about the beginning of Merleau-Ponty’ s essay L’Oeil et l’Esprit. Making a cutting in the largest movement of ontological reconfiguration suggested by the essay, we try to indicate here how the body’s analysis done by the philosopher already points to another type of being, leading to the recognition of an internal relation between subject and object. We try to show that the body already presents the reversible structure that will be noticed in all perceived, mark of Merleau-Ponty’s ontology based in the relation between the visible and the invisible

On the definition of democracy in the Theological-Political Treatise

This paper examines briefly the meaning of the definition of democracy in Chapter 16 of the Theological-Political Treatise. At first, I make a little history of the studies made in the last century concerning the way in which Spinoza wrote his political discourse. Then, I will treat the question around the geometric logic that structures Spinoza’s political discourse and defines the essence of democracy. According to the sixteenth chapter, we can say that the essence of democracy is both ontological and historically prior to the essences of other systems and that this priority, for the examination of Jewish history, is also chronological. This may mean that after the Theological-Political Treatise the whole politics in Spinoza is based on the definition of the essence of democrac

    The cartesian theory of criation

This article aims to explain the theory of creation found in Descartes’ Meditations, of which consistently follows the theory of the creation of the eternal truths developed in his Correspondence, between the years 1630 and 1649. Doing so, we attempt to refute interpretations according to which the theory of the creation of the eternal truths would be incompatible with the Cartesian system. To this aim, we will present the thomistic concept of creation and the gradual Cartesian refutation of it, from where emerges a modern theory of creation, basis of the theory of the creation of eternal truth

Bacon and Spinoza: science what for?

This paper shows that the role and value of science in Bacon and Espinosa differ according to the role and value that either attaches to metaphysics as branch of knowledge. In Bacon the value of science is big while the same value of metaphysics is none. In Spinoza, the figures are reversed. But while the theory of knowledge in Bacon obeys theological assumptions, and therefore, ultimately, the belief, in Spinoza the value of metaphysics and science is born of his metaphysical concepts, the result of a work of knowledge that follows not the faith but the own intellect

Imagination and superstition in the Theological-Political Treatise (Chap. I to XV)

Segundo Espinosa, quanto mais mistério tiver a religião, mais medo será possível incutir na mente dos homens, abrindo assim uma porta para a manipulação e dominação não só no campo teológicometafísico, mas também no políticoIn this article, we intend to demonstrate that from chapter I to XV in the TTP imagination and superstition are interrelated to the feeling of fear for Espinosa as the fear and superstition reveal the possibility of a confusing and inadequate expression of imagination in the mind which shall be noted that not always work in a negative way. As a matter of fact, in general, superstition and the excessive belief in the power of imagination are caused by the fear of future misfortune. Religion, built on such foundation, in other words, from the idea of a contingent God whose image is contaminated by superstition, becomes a kind of shelter from fear, undermining thus men’s potency of action. However, differently from what someone may think, not only is the effect the darkening of reason in favor of a life ruled by this kind of religion, but there are also political implications towards this relation among fear, imagination and superstition. According to Espinosa, the more the mystery there is in a religion, the more fear it will be possible to inculcate into men’s mind, opening, thus a door to manipulation and domination in the metaphysical-theological field as well as in politics

Spinoza and the tradition of melancholy

    Get PDF
Since the statement of the Problem XXX, imputed to Aristotle, several philosophers, artists and writers see the melancholy as a positive affection connected to the ‘man of genius’and to intellectual creation in general. According to the point of view of Spinoza’s theory of the affections the problem of melancholy leads to a second one: how it is possible an intelectual, artistic or literary activity arise from a deep sadness? Every activity is a production, a joy, an increase of the potency to act and think: how could it emerge from melancholy? Our hypothesis is that these problem could be explained by the ‘euforic joy’, the other face of melancholy, that springs as a reaction of the desire against sadness itself. Because it is joy, it removes the deep sadness. However, for beeing euphoric, it keeps the melancholic confined to his own disease. Therefore, the reaction does not cure the sick person of his illness, but mantains him confined to a endless cycle of euphoria and melancholic state

    On Huet’s, Foucher’s and Hume’s academic sceptism

Richard Popkin in his “The History of Scepticism from Erasmus to Spinoza”, chapter VII, presents the tendency of modern philosophers to reject the pyrrhonic scepticism, since it is dangerous to science, and the extreme dogmatism, due to its dubiousness. According to Popkin, the solution for these philosophers was to recommend a mitigated or constructive scepticism, which became respectable only with David Hume. Popkin conceives this kind of scepticism “[...] a theory that could accept the full force of the sceptical attack on the possibility of human knowledge, in the sense of necessary truths about the nature of reality, and yet allow for the possibility of knowledge in a lesser sense, as convincing or probable thuths about appearences” (Popkin, 14, p. 211). This paper shows that besides Hume the philosophers Pierre-Daniel Huet and Simon Foucher can be counted among the members of this philosophic school, that we call academic scepticism

Immanency and love in Spinoza’s philosophy

The following text presents a non-common interpretation of Spinoza’s philosophy, as it recovers not only the modern elements in which this philosophy lays, but the peculiar appropriation that Spinoza does of the concepts linked to the Neoplatonic-Christian tradition, such as life, amor Dei intellectualis, charity or the figure of Christ itself that appears in Spinoza’s correspondence. In this sense, the explicitation of the content and the relation between the concepts of immanency and love, appears as a helping point to remark that Spinoza’s doctrine is articulated on making a renovation of some of the most archaic Judaeo-Christian religious approaches — the conception of loving the fellow human being as the divinization of the man in God and, at the same time, as the realization of God in the man, fundamentally —, that satisfy the guidelines of a Modernity that finds in the affirmation of the autonomy of the subject, one of the bases that guarantees its emergence
