The Descartes’s rationalism called into question
Due to the resumption of the theory of the creation of the eternal truths, some interpreters bring to the contemporary international debate a interesting bias interpretative of Descartes’ thought. According to them, when Descartes presents the indifference of the will as an attribute of God, he introduces a concept totally dangerous, from which derives the incompatibility between the Cartesian system and divine indifference, deflagrating, finally, a radical irrationalism
Merleau-Ponty: between ontology and metaphysics
In this article, we resume Michel Haar’s evaluation according to which Merleau-Ponty’s ontological project would redound to metaphysics. In order to make such an evaluation more rigorous, we propose another criterion, inspired by Kant, according to which Merleau-Ponty’s work could also be classified as metaphysical. After that, we elucidate Merleau-Ponty’s philosophical strategies on the basis of which we judge that neither according to Haar’s criterion nor according to the Kantian’s criterion constitutes Merleau-Ponty a metaphysical discourse
Merleau-Ponty: from the constitution to the institution
This essay examines the merleaupontian notion of institution as the discovery of a path to overcome the tradition of philosophies of consciousness, specially the apories left by the hursselian traditional phenomenology, what allows the transition from a philosophy of constitution to a philosophy of genesis
The philosopher’s presence
This paper pays tribute to the Bento Prado’s work, stressing the originality and the critical aspect of his philosophical posture. In this sense, it analyses the strength of the concept of “Presence” – central axis of the author’s doctoral thesis, published with the title Presence and transcendental field – which is able to design in an unheard-of manner a point of convergence between the philosophies of Bergson, Sartre and Merleau-Ponty
“La grande politique” or Merleau-Ponty reader of Machiavelli
This article intends to consider the work of Niccolo Machiavelli from the approach made by Maurice Merleau-Ponty in his text “Note on Machiavelli”. In order to do that, we shall present some general aspects of Merleau-Ponty’s political philosophy, trying to track the presence of Machiavelli in the work of the French philosopher. We shall also consider the elements which guided Merleau-Ponty’s reading of philosophical texts. Regarding Machiavelli’s philosophy, we shall try to highlight the aspects that made the Florentine the first modern political thinker, according to Merleau-Ponty. In conclusion, we shall also consider, following Claude Lefort’s expression, the aspects that make politics in Machiavelli’s thought to be understood as “la grande politique”
Merleau-Ponty frequently uses metaphors in his texts. At first sight, such resource would have a functional role, that is, it would allow him to say the same in another way, through images. However, in the absence of the ideal of representation, and therefore of objective reference, the figure must be understood not as an accessory illustration, but as a use of language that modifies its referential status. By metaphorically conceiving the language of philosophy, Merleau-Ponty incorporates a procedure from literary narrative, thus revealing in which way philosophy and language relate in his work, in what concerns both its textual arrangement, and the philosophical problem of language
Merleau-Ponty and the “Great rationalism”: what does it mean - to read a classic?
This essay intends to show how the so-called “theory of reading” presented by MerleauPonty, which is based upon the meditation of other philosophers’ “unthought”, receives its proper foundation only in the context of his ontology or, more precisely, in the realm of his project’s consequences concerning the understanding of ideality. It is only in those terms that “history of philosophy” makes sense in Mearleau-Ponty´s work, after having assumed previous philosophical decisions such as the one that determines that in order to inscribe meaning in the domain of the sensitive it is necessary to underline the passive dimensions of experience that are responsible for the thematic acts of consciousness
The concept of life and the genesis of the human order
This paper investigates the transition from nature to culture through the concept of life, taking as basis the Bergson, Canguilhem and Merleau-Ponty’s formulations. In order to do that, it is necessary to investigate the genesis of modes of subjectivation – the vital action, the organism’s normativity and the expressive character of life – stated by each one of the authors, so that we can reflect on up to which point one can explain the human order (that is, the history and the culture) through its linking to the nature
The conception of human nature in Benedictus Spinoza
É a ideia-afecção. Spinoza in his Ethics conceives human nature as composed by means of two of God’s infinite attributes, thought and extension, or the idea and it’s object, the body. Human mind as an idea and the object of this idea, the body, assume a non-causal relation between the finite mode of thought and extension. The body, while a relation composed of motion and stillness is kept through the changes that affects its parts, is continually subjected to encounters by chance (occursus), or to the impact of multiple bodies around it. Mind reflects these encounters and through them acknowledges external bodies. It’s the afection-idea. It’s the imaginative knowledge, or the knowledge conditioned by the situation of our own body, by our temper, our previous experience and our individual prior concepts
Spinoza: a think about the actuality and the criticism of the utopian politics
This article tries to locate some points in which the Spinoza’s criticism of the philosophy of utopian politics can be found, philosophy which is very often based on a transcendent notion of power. We do that giving relief to some notions, like that of experience and that of individual, besides focusing the importance of the notion of conatus in the establishment of an ontology of the actuality of the human nature, in which, from the cognitive point of view, imaginative and rational knowledge affirm the actuality of this human nature and allow the proposition of political regimes based on such actualit
