Pascal and the question of knowledge’s limits

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this article is to discuss the theory of knowledge by the French philosopher Blaise Pascal (1623-1662). Starting from the opuscule entitled “The Geometrical Spirit and the Art of Persuading”, we will try to show Pascal’s epistemological concerns on the idea of science’s foundation. We will emphasize a concept that seems to be emphasized in great part of his work as a experimental physicist and philosopher: it is the realization of the knowledge’s limits. According to us, the comprehension of such limits is essential for the understanding of how new theorems are produced in geometry and how the hypothesis are justified in the empirical context

The right to life in Hobbes’s Elements of law natural and politic

This article aims to examine the limits of man’s freedom of action, that is, of his natural right taking into account the final goal of this right in Hobbes’s Elements of law, natural and politic. This final goal would be man’s self-preservation. However, in order for this right to be effectively respected, Hobbes claims that it is necessary the rise of a sovereign power. Thus, a simple pact among men is not enough to live in peace. In other words, the existence of a political order ruled by an absolute sovereign power is necessary for the preservation of life to be lawfully effective. Hobbes understands that the civil state is the only one capable of imposing effective conditions for this goal to be achieved

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to examine the hobbesian thesis that every effect has a necessary cause, showing how he demonstrates it in different but complementary ways: firstly, by means of identification between entire, sufficient and necessary cause and the redefinition of concepts of power and act; secondly, through the subordination of the principle of bivalence to the necessary determination of events; and lastly, by affirming that only through a necessary cause, a cause that can operate only mechanically via contact, is possible to give the reason why the events have these spatial and temporal features instead of others. Therefore the mechanical and necessary cause becomes in Hobbes the unique legitimate type of explanation of phenomena and the general form of intelligibility

    Imagination: between fear and freedom

    Get PDF
Fear and hope appear in the history of Philosophy as problems located in temporal dimension of existence. Espinosa follows this tradition, as well as the use Philosophy as a medicina animi, but sets apart for himself some differences. Giving prominence to the role of image in fear and hope constitution, he delimits the way by which these affects are necessarily produced by the limitation of imagination to body duration. However, when freed of the impediments to its potency, the mind is able to ordinate and concatenate body affections, considering itself without relation to the body, under a new perspective. Fear problem treatment, therefore, is not in present time, but in eternity

The meaning of sui iuris in Spinoza’s philosophy

    Get PDF
In modern political philosophy, it is common usage to designate as sui iuris a sort of personal freedom not subjected to external influences amidst a still emerging language of natural rights. Sui iuris is then a sovereign space of individual autonomy under the expression of a right. Spinoza also refers to sui iuris quite often, but mostly in his Political Treatise, through the pair sui iuris – alterius iuris, which is usually translated as a pair of autonomy-heteronomy. This paper will try to demonstrate that the sui iuris in Spinoza goes through a radical transformation: not only is it not totally incompatible with alterius iuris (both are a sort of gradual progression of liberty), but it also has an epistemological dimension close to a context of personal salvation. Sui iuris is more a liberation than a libert

Individual substance and relation between body and soul in Leibniz

The issue of the union between soul and body presents itself in the Leibnizian philosophy in an unique way through the modern philosophy tradition. Instead of explaining how this relationship happens, Leibniz inquires why does it happen. Through the understanding of the individual substance or Monad as being at the same time logical subject and ontological expressive center, it will be possible to understand why the fashion of how soul and body communicate with each other becomes a question of little or none importance. Through the intertwining of the concept of pre-established harmony with that of expression the German philosopher definitely eliminates the possibility of a causal relationship between both and introduces instead an analogical relationship that puts both series of predicates in connection

The young Schelling’s criticism of Tübingen´s Theology in the context of the Pantheism Controversy

    Get PDF
The article attempts to show the main moments of Schelling’s criticism of the ortodoxal Theology of Tübingen. In his correspondence with Hegel, as well as in his texts as a young man, Schelling tries to show to his friend why this criticism of the theology is connected to the fact that he has become an Spinozist, what inserts the debate in the so called Pantheism Controversy, started with the Jacobi´s book about Spinoza. Although Schelling agrees with Fichte in his lecture of Jacobi´s book, he outgoes him by equating God and the very absolute self

Images and analogies of the body and the mind in Spinoza’s politics

This article proposes to study some interpretative possibilities raised by analogy of the image of the human body and the structure of the political body. Beginning by discussing the dynamics of production of bodies in nature, the text provides an analysis of the contradiction between two thesis presented in the work of Spinoza - one in his ontology, and another in politics -, which are formulated in terms of the analogy of human body with the political body . Then this analogy spreads in a comparison between the human mind and what might be called a “mind” of the political body, by discussing the two levels of politics - the city (civitas) and the State (imperio). Finally it is proposed an interpretation of the production process of ideas in political life in the light of Althusserian theory of ideolog
