    Get PDF
In Thailand, it is crucial to acquire English language skills for effective communication and business purposes, given the rise to international tourism. It is essential for the vendors in the local markets who sell rice products to be able to communicate in English in order to provide explanations about Thai rice yields to foreign customers. However, these vendors often do not receive sufficient attention when it comes to expanding their English language abilities for interacting with foreign customers. Therefore, the study explores the English language needs of Thai local vendors who sell Thai rice products in order to design lessons based on their learning needs. The participants in the study were vendors of Thai street desserts and products who live in Luang Neau sub-district, Doi Saket district, Chiang Mai province. The instruments used were a needs survey and semi-structured interviews. The researcher used descriptive statistics on the data obtained via the needs survey for quantitative data analysis such as frequency and percentage, as well as means and standard deviation. Content analysis, using HyperResearch software, was used to analyze qualitative data gained from the interviews. The findings showed that most of the sample group were 50 – 65 years old and had high needs to develop their English speaking and listening skills. They reported a need for English lessons on authentic or relevant topics and communicative language to communicate with foreign customers in the local market. When inquired about the extent of their motivation, it was found that they had instrumental motivation and positive attitudes toward learning English, believing that being able to communicate is a great value-added asset as this can better their standard of living and enable them to earn more money

    ŚVETĀRAṆYA OF SOUTH INDIAN ŚAIVISM

    No full text
This article is a summary of 60+ Tēvāram hymns on Veṇkāṭu which are not only important documents in the history of South Indian Śaivism, but also the sthala and organizing principle of the structure of the temple, its location and iconography. The Śaivite Navagraha-sthalasin the Kāviri delta, are Curiyanārkōyil-Sūrya, Tiṅkalūr-Candra, Tiruveṇkāṭu-Budha, Vaittīcuvarankōyil-Aṅgāraka, Ālaṅkuṭi-Bṛhaspati, Kañcaṇūr-Śukra, TirunaḷḷāṟuŚanaiścara,Kuṃbhakoṇam/Nākeśvaram-Rāhu and Perumpaḷḷam-Ketu. The Vaiṣṇavas have their Navagrahasthalas in the Tāmiraparaṇi basin, called Navatiruppatis (nine holy lands). The nava-Kailāsas in this zone are also treated Śaiva grahasthalas. Śvetāraṇyeśvara temple.Tiruveṇkāṭu, is a crucial Śaiva-sthala, much less known to the outer world. The three authors of the Tēvāram, viz., Campantar (Tirumuṟai 1-3), Nāvukkaracar (4.6) and Cuntarar (7) have contributed six patikams (decades of hymns, totally of 62 hymns) on the Budha-sthala inTiruveṇkāṭu. The different manifestations of Śiva are extolled in these hymns, particularly Ardhanārīśvara, Naṭarāja, Yogīśvara, Candraśekhara, Ekapādamūrti, Bhikṣāṭana, Kālāri, Gajasaṃhāra and so on. These remain unexamined in scholarly works. It is worthwhile to see what the Tēvāram-trio have to say on Veṅkāṭu. It seems during the past, Cōḻa, Veṇkāṭu was a base of the Vīraśaivas. Therefore, a shrine for the Lord Vīrabhadra is present within the Śvetāraṇyeśvara temple. The bhakti Tamil literature clearly recognizes the importance of this venue with reference to its landscape, sthala, vṛkṣa, cultic values, mythologies, nāmāvalis ‘epithets’ and its implications on the visual iconography of the temple that evolved underthe Cōḻas and successive rulers of the region. This article hopes to show the importance of an aspect of Tamil Śaivism which is often neglected by scholars.

In response to COVID - 19 pandemic, the schools urgently transitioned from traditional teaching to online teaching. Teachers were forced to quickly adapt to the new learning pedagogy. This study aims to investigate teachers’ perception toward factors that influence online teaching readiness using competency aspects, institutional support and computer anxiety as predictors. Samples were collected through online survey from 172 private school teachers. Multiple linear regression was used to test the hypotheses. The results revealed that linear combination of independent variables was statistically significant to online teaching readiness F (6,171) = 18.01, p = <.001), however individual analysis shows different results, among four competencies, time management is the strongest predictor of online teaching readiness whereas, computer anxiety was the second strongest. The remaining construct did not significantly influence online teaching readiness. Further analysis and review of previous literatures reveals that four-competencies used in this study has mixed results compared to findings of previous literature using same construct. The mixed results of competency variables could be attributed to variation of characteristics of the population. The researcher recommends to further explore other constructs such as institutional aspect towards online teaching readiness as well as the influence of cultural context as the mediating factor

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of celebrity endorsement on the attitudes of Thai male consumers, which lead to male cosmetics purchase intentions, by using a case study of famous male cosmetics advertisements. Design/Methodology/Approach – To purpose the new conceptual model, this study has explored previous research and adapted some models to be more relevant. A self-administered survey was used to collect the primary data. Inferential analysis was done by multiple linear regression (MLR) to test the hypotheses. Findings – The results show partial support of hypotheses, such that trustworthiness and relevance are the only 2 factors in celebrity’s attributes that influence attitudes toward advertisements and attitudes toward products. Moreover, both attitudinal variables are significantly linked with male cosmetics purchase intentions. Limitations/Implications – This study is relatively novel in terms of the industry that it aimed to study, male cosmetics. Previous articles related to this industry, and research using the PATER model, are scarce. Future studies can pinpoint more into this model and this industry. Furthermore, the familiarity between consumers and ads elements might play a role, according to the results. Hence, Thai ads might be used to study in future research on Thai male consumers
