    No full text
Physics education in schools often remains theoretical and disconnected from students' daily experiences, leading to decreased interest and limited conceptual understanding. One way to address this issue is by incorporating local knowledge into teaching materials to make learning more relevant and applicable to real life. This study aims to develop and evaluate the viability of a physics learning module based on the indigenous knowledge of fishermen on Jampea Island, Indonesia, specifically about sea tides, for senior high school students. The research used a development approach with the ADDIE model, which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation phases. The module was validated by two experts, and a small trial was conducted with 24 Grade X Science students at SMA Negeri 4 Selayar Islands Regency. Data was collected through validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and learning outcome tests, then analyzed using Aiken’s V and descriptive percentage analysis. Results show that the module achieved very high validity, with an average Aiken’s V of 0.84. In terms of practicality, 54.7% of students rated the module as very practical, while 45.3% found it practical; all teachers (100%) evaluated it as very practical. Effectiveness analysis indicated that 75% of students attained learning mastery above the Minimum Completeness Criteria, demonstrating the module's success in improving learning outcomes. The novelty of this research lies in the systematic integration of Jampea Island fishermen’s local wisdom into physics education through the ADDIE model, supported by empirical validation of its validity, practicality, and effectiveness. In conclusion, this locally based physics module is both feasible and effective for classroom use. It enriches physics education by providing a culturally responsive and contextual learning model that enhances students’ conceptual understanding and engagement

Low learning motivation and limited student engagement remain persistent challenges in elementary science education, particularly in abstract topics such as light and sound. Conventional instructional approaches often fail to involve students, resulting in suboptimal learning experiences. In response to this issue, gamification-based digital learning media have emerged as a promising alternative to enhance student motivation and learning activities. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Wordwall, a gamification-based learning medium, in increasing motivation and engagement in science learning among elementary school students. A mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design was employed. Quantitatively, a true-experimental pretest–posttest control-group design was used with two Grade V classes at an elementary school in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, involving 50 students, equally divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received instruction using Wordwall, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. Data were collected using a learning motivation questionnaire and an observation sheet for learning activities. Qualitatively, phenomenological interviews were conducted with teachers and students to explore their learning experiences. The quantitative results showed that students in the experimental group experienced a significantly higher increase in learning motivation (21.37%) and learning activities (22.19%) compared to the control group (8.49% and 11.81%, respectively), with statistically significant differences confirmed by t-tests and ANOVA (p < 0.05). Qualitative findings supported these results, indicating that Wordwall created a more interactive, enjoyable, and engaging learning environment that encouraged active participation and sustained attention. The novelty of this study lies in integrating a true-experimental design with a qualitative phenomenological analysis to comprehensively examine the motivational and behavioral aspects of learning in elementary science education. In conclusion, Wordwall is an effective gamification-based learning medium for enhancing students’ motivation and engagement in science learning, and this study provides empirical evidence for the development of gamification-based instructional models in physics education at the elementary level

Local Democracy in the Kingdom of Balanipa and the Genealogy of Civic Culture

    No full text
Studies on local democracy in Indonesia are still dominated by modern institutional perspectives that tend to ignore local wisdom-based political practices, including the experiences of traditional kingdoms in the archipelago. The Balanipa Kingdom in Mandar is one of the local political entities that demonstrates practices of power based on deliberation, customary legitimacy, and collective participation, but it has not been widely studied in the context of political culture and the formation of civic culture. This study aims to analyze the transformation of the political culture of the Balanipa Kingdom from a traditional power structure to the formation of a civic culture among the Mandar people. The research uses a historical-interpretative approach and library research combined with a socio-political genealogy perspective using historical documents and academic studies on political culture and local democracy. The analysis is conducted through historical interpretation and conceptual synthesis to identify the relationship between customary values, government structures, and the civic orientation of the community. The results of the study show that the Balanipa system of government is not an absolute monarchy, but contains deliberative mechanisms through customary institutions such as Appeq Banua Kayyang, which functions as a check on Mara'dia's power. The values of deliberation (sirumung karaya), consensus (assamaturuang), and solidarity (sikalulu) form the participatory and collective political orientation of the community, transforming into a civic culture that shapes social participation and political legitimacy. This study concludes that local democracy has developed historically in the Mandar tradition through customary institutions. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of local political history analysis with political culture and civic culture theory. This study contributes an alternative perspective that Indonesian democracy can be strengthened through the revitalization of local political values as the foundation of substantive democracy based on cultural wisdo

Geopolitics Beyond Recognition: Somaliland, Israel, and the Changing Meaning of Statehood

    No full text
The evolving relationship between Somaliland and Israel raises urgent questions about how diplomacy beyond formal recognition is reshaping the politics of sovereignty and legitimacy in Africa, particularly in a region governed by strong territorial norms. This study aims to examine the political implications of emerging ties between a non-recognized polity and an established state, and to analyze how recognition operates as a strategic and political instrument rather than a purely legal act. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research relies on official statements, diplomatic communiqués, policy documents, and responses from regional organizations, which are analyzed using thematic analysis and qualitative discourse analysis to trace competing narratives of legitimacy and strategic framing. The findings show that three distinct legitimacy logics structure the interaction: performance-based legitimacy articulated by Somaliland through references to governance, stability, and elections; strategic-security legitimacy advanced by Israel through concerns over maritime security, counterterrorism, and regional influence; and normative-legal legitimacy emphasized by Somalia and regional organizations through the defense of territorial integrity and inherited borders. The study concludes that diplomacy without formal recognition is becoming an increasingly viable modality of geopolitical engagement in the Horn of Africa. The novelty of this research lies in conceptualizing recognition as a layered and contested process that links de facto statehood to regional security logics and norm entrepreneurship. The article contributes to scholarship on unrecognized states and African sovereignty norms while offering policy-relevant insights for regional organizations and external partners engaged in the evolving politics of statehood in the Horn of Africa

Trash Talk Dan Transformasi Diri: Refleksi Filsafat Komunikasi Terhadap Budaya Verbal Dalam Game Online

    No full text
Trash talk has become an integral element of communication among online gamers and is often perceived as a spontaneous expression triggered by competitive tension. However, its influence extends far beyond momentary emotional reactions, shaping how players communicate, construct their identities, and negotiate social meaning within virtual and real-life interactions. This study aims to examine the verbal culture of trash talk through the lens of communication philosophy by exploring its ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions, while also integrating perspectives from symbolic interactionism, speech act theory, and constructivism. Using a literature review method, this article analyzes various studies that address verbal behavior in online games, digital communication ethics, and the linguistic impact of gaming on players’ character and social interactions. The findings indicate that trash talk is not merely an emotional outburst, but a symbolic communicative practice that emerges through repeated interactions within gamer communities. The use of harsh language and specific expressions contributes to the formation of shared meanings and group identity, functioning as markers of social positioning in digital competition. Conversely, this phenomenon reveals shifts in values and ethical challenges, as the normalization of verbal aggression risks influencing players’ attitudes, emotional responses, and interpersonal behavior. This study highlights the importance of a philosophical perspective to understand trash talk more comprehensively, particularly regarding how it constructs meaning, shapes social relations, and contributes to players’ self-transformation within the increasingly dominant culture of online gaming
