The relationship between energy consumption and economic growth is a hot issue in today's society. This paper aims to empirically verify the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth. This article analyzes the relation of energy consumption with the economic growth taking the case of South Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal) along with the macroeconomic determinants that affect the total economic growth – FDI growth, CPI rate and population growth in order to avoid omitted variable bias and misleading results. The time span of this study covers the period of 1980–2019. To examine the significant relation of these determinants and impact of energy consumption on economic growth, In-pooled regression, Fixed-effects, Bidirectional fixed effect, Random-effects, and GLS estimation regression model are used. The estimated results show a positive correlation of energy consumption and all other economic determinants with economic growth except CPI, where there is a negative correlation founded
The Effect of Leisure Benefits on Loneliness of University Students
The study aimed to determine the differences between loneliness levels and leisure benefits according to the variables of university students and the effect of leisure benefits on loneliness. In the research, scanning model, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used. The study group of the research consisted of 255 students, 148 males (58.0%) and 107 females (42.0%), studying at the School of Physical Education and Sports of Istanbul Gelişim University, and formed by voluntary participation. In addition to the personal information form, the UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS) developed by Russell, Peplau, and Ferguson (1978) and adapted to Turkish by Demir (1989), and Leisure Benefit Scale (LBS) developed by Ho (2008) and adapted to Turkish by Akgül, Ertüzün, and Karakucuk (2018), were used. After the data showed normal distribution, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Test were used in the analysis. According to the research results, a difference was found between the individuals' loneliness according to the age groups and the leisure benefits according to their gender. As a result of the research, it was concluded that as the leisure benefits of the individuals increased, their loneliness decreased
Teaching and Assessment through Online Platforms during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Benefits and Challenges
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has compelled education systems across the globe to fully embrace online learning as an alternative to face-to-face classes. This has resulted in a paradigm shift, in which online teaching and assessment practices continue to gain prominence at the tertiary level. Hence, this study explores lecturers' teaching and assessment strategies for teaching university students through online platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study has used a framework of SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats) analysis as its theoretical base. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with five lecturers from three universities in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The collected data was analysed using content analysis. This study found that lecturers were able to manage the teaching and assessment processes during the COVID-19 school restrictions, using a combination of platforms such as Blackboard-collaborate, WhatsApp, Kahoot, and Google Classroom. The findings also revealed that a wide variety of teaching and assessment methodologies, including small group work, collaborative learning, case methods, discussion posts, multiple choice quizzes, chats, game activities, open-ended questions, and essays were utilized on these platforms. Although the methodologies used for teaching and assessing on these platforms require additional preparation time, they also help increase interaction between students and enable immediate grading of scripts and student feedback. Further findings revealed that online assessment is highly susceptible to test/examination malpractices. This study provided recommendations helpful to policymakers, lecturers, and students regarding online teaching and assessment strategies
Exploring a Gamified Learning Tool in the ESL Classroom: The Case of Quizizz
Embracing gamification in education is, indeed, inevitable, especially with the arrival of the millennials whose lives are greatly influenced by digital technologies and favor learning in a fun, interactive, and engaging environment. Quizizz, a gamified educational tool, has gradually gained the interest of researchers and stakeholders in education as this application has presented positive outcomes towards learning with the integration of unique game elements such as leader boards, memes, and quiz reports, each of which can assist in enhancing engagement and provide a positive learning experience in a non-stressful setting. This research was conducted to explore the influence and effects of Quizizz in enhancing young Malaysian ESL learners learning irregular English verbs. This quasi-experimentally designed research gathered data from a sample of 30 primary pupils using a pre-test/post-test approach. The data attained were analyzed descriptively using sample t-tests to explain the increment of the pupils’ performance on the post-test associated with learning via Quizizz. The results are discussed both in terms of overall pupil performance involving the use of Quizizz and in terms of gender comparison to examine any significant difference in performance between male and female users of Quizizz
The Learning Disciplines for Support Personnel to Build a Learning Organization of Ramkhamhaeng University
This research aimed primarily at exploring the learning disciplines of support personnel to build a learning organization of Ramkhamhaeng University (RU) and comparing their learning disciplines as categorized by their gender, age, education level, and work experiences. The sample consisted of 334 support personnel of RU. The research tool was a 5-rating scale questionnaire with the reliability coefficient of 0.97. Statistics used to analyze the data included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and One-way Analysis of Variance. The findings revealed the high levels of learning disciplines to build a learning organization (LO) among the support personnel both in the overall aspect and in each of the five dimensions. In addition, the support personnel with different gender and age indicated no significant difference in the overall aspect and in each of the five dimensions regarding their learning disciplines to build a LO. However, the aforesaid difference at 0.05 significant level was found among the support personnel with different education level. Moreover, the support personnel with different work experiences indicated their non-significant differences in terms of the overall, and in the aspects of shared vision and team learning, but reported a significant difference regarding personal mastery, mental models, and systems thinking
Examination of the Relationship between Mood and Achievement Goal Orientations of the Students Studying at Faculty of Sports Sciences
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between affect and achievement-goal orientations of sports science faculty students. Participants forming the research group are studying at the faculty of sports sciences at Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, and in terms of gender, the research group consists of a total of 487 students, 272 males and 215 females (x̄age = 23.08 + 3.271). The first of the measurement tools used in line with the research purpose; It is the Achievement Goal Orientations Scale, which was developed by Midgley et al. (1998) and gained literature by adaptation to Turkish culture by Akın (2006) Secondly, the Positive and Negative Affectivity Scale, which was originally developed by Watson, Clarck, and Tellegen (1988) under the name of "Positive and Negative Affectivity Schedule" and adapted to Turkish culture by Gençöz (2000) was used. Pearson Correlation test, Anova test and independent samples t test were used in the solution and interpretation of the data. As a result, it was observed that there was a relationship between the achievement-goal orientations of the sports faculty students and their mood (positive and negative)
Evaluation of the Metaphoric Perceptions of the Faculty of Sports Sciences Students Regarding the Concept of Physical Education
Physical education contributes greatly to the physical, psychological and intellectual development of individuals. The awareness of the students of the coaching department about the concept of physical education should basically be revealed. The aim of this study is to reveal the perceptions of students studying in the coaching department about physical education through metaphors. Phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research designs, has been used and the concept of "Physical Education" constitutes the phenomenon of the study. The study group of the research consisted of 112 students who were studying at the Department of Coaching in the Faculty of Sport Sciences of Uşak University in the 2018-2019 Academic Year. Convenience sampling was used to determine the study group. As our knowledge of the concept of physical education increases, its volume will constantly expand. Therefore, the concept of physical education can be compared to a warehouse. It has a potential that cannot find its full expression in the language due to its storage feature. Our study did not change the nature of the concept of physical education after all. However, with the experimental work we have done on this subject, we can say that it contributes the content of the concept of physical education as "an occupation that requires effort", "an occupation that provides physical benefit", "an occupation that increases performance", "an occupation that enhances the appearance", "an occupation with an element of harmony and balance" and as an "emotional benefit"
Corporate Commitment of Environment: Evidence from Sustainability Reports of Mining Companies in Indonesia
This research aims to explore the commitment of Indonesian mining companies to environmental sustainability and ensure that they operate following ethical rules without damaging the nature. A content analysis investigates information related to the environment. Research sources include 33 environmental items seen from 7 sustainability reports of Indonesian mining companies. The text’s substance is also examined by identifying various specific characteristics of a message objectively, systematically, and in general. Research results showed that out of 45 mining companies in Indonesia, only 7 had disclosed sustainability reporting. All companies had an environmental commitment but with different stressing. Some companies reveal more about biodiversity; some are more focused on managing both renewable and nonrenewable energy, while others concentrate on effluents and waste. Since mining companies use numerous natural resources as their raw material, these companies should be more committed and concerned about the sustainability of nature and the environmental damage it causes. This study only examined seven sustainability reports from Indonesian mining companies. For future research, the researcher suggested observing annual reports of mining companies that do not disclose sustainability reporting and expressed concerns about the environment, both in Indonesia and Asia as a whole
Ecological Modernization Theory (EMT): Antecedents and Successors
his study consolidates the state of academic research on the Ecological Modernization Theory (EMT). The EMT starts from a sociological perspective and enters into a series of political and economic factors that are considered crucial under the aegis of processes and practices. EM predicts that under political, economic, and technological conditions, competition among capitalists can be redirected to achieve eco-efficiency of pollution prevention. Based on a literature review from across 26 years, the study presents an overview of the evolution of the theme, background, and future perspectives. Using the databases Scopus, Web of Science, and Science Direct, a sample of 291 studies was mapped, which were read in full. Content analysis was conducted to abstract the current panorama of the theory of ecological modernization and to infer trends of the progress of the subject. The originality/value of this study is that we integrate diverse research perspectives into a comprehensive multidimensional structure of EM, with the purpose of analyzing the antecedents, artifacts associated with theory, method, types of studies developed, constructs explored together with the theory of EM and subcategories context, relevant stakeholders, technological innovations, and public policies. As future perspectives for studies, we suggest aligning EMT with circular economy, industry 4.0, and management information systems based on big data
Determinants of Corporate Sustainability Disclosure: The Case of the S&P/EGX ESG Index
The paper investigates the influence of the corporate board and the dissemination of a separate sustainability report on the corporate sustainability disclosure (CSD) level of corporations listed on the Egyptian sustainability index from 2016–2018. This study used the score-weighting scheme assigned by the Egyptian Stock Exchange (EGX) to evaluate, list, and rank companies in terms of their CSD. Empirical results reveal that boards with higher independence and larger size generate a higher CSD score. The results also support the assumption that the issuance of a separate sustainability report boosts the CSD score. The current study provides insights for policymakers and regulators in developing countries, in general, and in Egypt, in particular, regarding the role of corporate board and issuance of a separate sustainability report in promoting CSD. To the best of the researcher’s knowledge, no prior study has discussed the determinants of the level of CSD for corporations listed on the sustainability index in Egypt
