The Level of Ethical Sensitivity among Jordanian University Students According to their Educational Level & Specialization
This study aimed to investigate the level of ethical sensitivity among Princess Alia University College Students in Jordan and how this is influenced by their educational level and specialization. To achieve the objects of the study, the ethical sensitivity scale questionnaire (ESSQ) was used, as developed by Narvaez (2001). This was used to measure the moral sensitivity of adults and adolescents. It consists of (28) items in seven dimensions, which are the ability to read emotions, to represent the views of others, interest in communication with others, the activation of personal relations, taking into account differences and controlling social prejudice, working to generate interpretations and alternatives, and identifying the consequences of an event and the available options. The sample of the study consisted of (126) randomly selected undergraduate and graduate students. The results of the study showed that the level of ethical sensitivity among Princess Alia University College Students was low, and there were statistically significant differences in the level of ethical sensitivity due to specialization, in favor of humanities students, as well as statistically significant differences in the level of ethical sensitivity due to the educational level, in favor of master’s students
Academic Stress, Psychological Distress, Coping and Self-Efficacy among Undergraduate University Students during COVID 19
Academic stress is the most common emotional or mental state that students experience during their studies. Stress is a result of a wide range of issues, including test and exam burden, a demanding course, a different educational system, and thinking about future plans upon graduation. The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between academic stress, psychological distress, coping and self-efficacy among undergraduate university students during COVID 19. The sample of the research was 302 undergraduate students (males=95 and females=207) with the age ranges 18 years to 25 years (M=1.41, SD=0.46), from the city of Karachi. Purposive Convenient sampling technique was used. All the participants were provided with the link of Google forms which comprised of the following measures: consent form, demographic form, Perception of Academic Stress Scale (Bedewy & Gabriel, 2015), Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (Kessler & Mroczek, 1992) , coping scale (Hamby, Grych, & Banyard, 2015) and General self-efficacy scale (Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995) were used. For the statistical analysis SPSS version 22 was used. The analysis revealed that there is a significant predictive relationship of Academic Stress with Psychological Distress (R2 = .039, F = 12.18, P<.05), whereas significant negative relationship of academic stress with coping and self-efficacy is found (p<0.01). Moreover, significant positive relationship is found between psychological distress and coping and significant negative relationship is found between psychological distress and self-efficacy (p<0.01). Also, significant gender difference is found in the scores of academic stress and psychological distress (p<0.05). This study will help researchers, faculty and psychologist to increase their awareness of sources of academic stress among students, their coping and level of psychological distress and to develop an intervention plan to reduce academic stress and psychological distress among students
Enhancing Students’ Mobile-Assisted Language Learning through Self-Assessment in a Chinese College EFL Context
The rapid development of mobile communication technology, high penetration of mobile devices as well as the increasing number of mobile English learning applications all together facilitate the feasibility and popularity of mobile-assisted English learning among Chinese college students. Self-assessment is always recommended as a powerful strategy to enhance learning by helping learners regulate their study and improve their motivation and engagement, so it may also offer the potential to evaluate students’ mobile autonomous learning in the new era. This study investigates the current condition of Chinese college students’ mobile-assisted English learning, and which self-assessment strategies are employed during the process. Data collected from the questionnaire, which surveyed about 300 undergraduates from 7 Chinese public and private universities, show the popularity of mobile-assisted English learning among Chinese undergraduates. However, in terms of self-assessment strategies, the results are less optimistic, for only about half of the respondents use it with a medium to high frequency. The reasons, analyzed through a follow-up interview, mainly lie in the lack of strong will and motivation, the loneliness of learning alone and the difficulty in finding the perfect application. Suggestions for strengthening self-assessment include improving knowledge of what self-assessment is and its benefits, planning one’s study properly, improving collaboration with classmates, involving teachers as supporters and paying more attention to subsequent reflection
A New Approach to Modelling Students’ Socio-Emotional Attributes to Predict Their Performance in Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) are computer-based learning environments that aim to imitate to the greatest possible extent the behavior of a human tutor in their capacity as a pedagogical and subject expert. One of the major challenges of these systems is to know how to adapt the training both to changing requirements of all kinds and to student knowledge and reactions. The activities recommended by these systems mainly involve active student performance prediction that, nowadays, becomes problematic in the face of the expectations of the present world. In the associated literature, several approaches, using various attributes, have been proposed to solve the problem of performance prediction. However, these approaches have failed to take advantage of the synergistic effect of students' social and emotional factors as better prediction attributes. This paper proposes an approach to predict student performance called SoEmo-WMRMF that exploits not only cognitive abilities, but also group work relationships between students and the impact of their emotions. More precisely, this approach models five types of domain relations through a Weighted Multi-Relational Matrix Factorization (WMRMF) model. An evaluation carried out on a data sample extracted from a survey carried out in a general secondary school showed that the proposed approach gives better performance in terms of reduction of the Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) compared to other models simulated in this paper
Determining the Teacher Education Needs for the Treatment of the Problem Behaviors of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder
This study was carried out to test the effect of the training program developed for teachers who are involved in the education of students with ASD to enable them to provide quality education in the education and training process. To determine the teacher training needs for the treatment of problem behaviors that occur in students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the aim of this study. For this purpose, inter-views under four sub-headings were conducted. These titles are the determination of behavior, programming, program implementation, and Program Evaluation. In the research, a qualitative case study design was preferred. The data were obtained from 22 teachers working with ASD students through face-to-face interviews, audio and video recordings using semi-structured interview forms. The analysis of the data was done through the descriptive analysis technique. As a result of the research, most of the teachers stated that they did not find themselves sufficient regarding the problem behaviors and treatment of students with ASD. The in-depth results of the study were discussed in line with the teacher needs, relevant qualitative research, and implications for future research and applications were suggested
Assessment of Photosynthetic Pigments and Dust Load in Selected Avenue Plants of Saharanpur and Herbertpur Areas of India
The paper depicts impact of SO2, NO2, ozone and CO in chosen road plants of Saharanpur and Herbertpur regions in Indian dominion. Plant species falling in and around the area of modern territory and street side were chosen for examining purpose. Different morphological attributes and impact of business and vehicular residue on chlorophyll shade were contemplated and noticed the impact of residue molecule on development of the plant species (Ficus religiosa, Mangifera indica). In the examination the impacts of residue on chosen tree species was noticed and which will help in overseeing advancement of green belt to lessen the air contamination in the investigation area. Treatment with dust fundamentally expanded the fixation on leaves and the impacts were more extreme in significant degree of residue medicines. Contrasted with control, chlorophyll and porphyrin in substance were essentially diminished in the residue treated gatherings. This investigation propounds that business and vehicular residue statements affect photosynthetic shades, with broad impacts on development and improvement of plant
Teachers’ Perceptions of the Transition from Onsite to Online Teaching during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Educational systems worldwide have been affected by government restrictions imposed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, causing the temporary closure of many educational institutions. The new condition has forced teachers to make the transition from onsite to online teaching. The current study used a descriptive method to examine online teachers’ perceptions towards online teaching during the transition to online learning at a center for foreign languages in Vietnam. The results reveal that teachers have a relatively positive perception of online teaching, although many typical problems of online teaching do present themselves and the effectiveness of online teaching does not always compare favorably with traditional classroom teaching. Teachers’ suggestions are significant for improving online teaching quality. Online teaching is highly likely here to stay and will continue to improve. The transition from traditional face-to-face classrooms to online teaching can be successfully achieved and its quality can be ensured if challenges and ways of improving online learning continue to be closely examined
The Impact of Electricity Production Sources and GDP on CO2 Emission in Bangladesh: A Short-run Dynamic
This study aims to measure the short-run dynamics of electricity production sources and GDP on CO2 emission in Bangladesh. As a developing nation, Bangladesh needs to generate more electricity to cater to the demands of households and firms. However, environmental degradation due to energy utilization, industrialization, and economic expansion has negative consequences. The current study applies the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach by considering the time series data from 1972 to 2018. The findings showed that the short-run association with ECT is 25% and 1% increase in electricity production raises the CO2 emission by 0.63%. The GDP has no significant impact on CO2 emission in the short run. The current study recommends that modern technologies like small power producers (SPP), solar panels, recommends that other renewable technologies can be used as alternatives to electricity production. Through small power producers, the country can meet the electricity demand for households and small firms. This study will create awareness on the need for sustainable electricity production by considering lesser environmental damages
Designing Scenarios for Integrated and Sustainable E-Waste Management: Case of Indonesia
Poorly managed e-waste can lead to public health and environmental problems resulting from the leakage of toxic e-waste substances. Building upon the integrated e-waste management (IEWM) concept, this study aims to propose an integrated and sustainable e-waste management strategy. It also suggests alternative processes for the effective collection, treatment, and disposal of e-waste. In its first stage of system dynamics modeling, the study employed an integrated approach comprising interviews and the Causal Loop Diagram (CLD). Based on the stakeholders’ collaboration and resource management, two alternative scenarios have been proposed: 1) integration to community collection; and 2) scavengers as collection agents. Both scenarios have been implemented by means of public– private partnership (PPP) with industries. Interrelating factors such as governance, physical system, and sustainability aspects have also been analyzed. The proposed alternative scenarios can benefit the municipal government in terms of improving the existing e-waste management channels and, therefore, facilitating a better e-waste management system. They can also ensure better collaboration with related stakeholders in recycling, manufacturing, smelter industry processes, etc., together with strengthening the relationship between the community and the informal sector
The Impact of Corporate Governance Mechanisms on Environmental Disclosure Practices: Evidence from Manufacturing Industry in Bangladesh
]The current study identifies the impact of corporate governance mechanisms on environmental disclosure (ED) in Bangladesh. A total of 359 firm-year observations extracted from the annual reports of 86 listed manufacturing companies listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange for the period from 2015 to 2019 were examined. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify the driving forces of ED practices. This study found that foreign stockholdings, board size, and audit committee size significantly positively correlate with ED. However, surprisingly, more representation of independent directors in the boardroom and institutional ownership in share capital can actually reduce the extent of ED for our sample firms. These results provide a comprehensive understanding of the determinants of ED in an emerging country like Bangladesh and may prove useful for regulators, policymakers, and corporate managers. The data will assist other stakeholders in making relevant decisions. However, by providing the empirical facts of the underlying determinants of ED practices in developing countries’ manufacturing sector settings, the study provides a novel contribution to the current ED literature. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study investigating the determinants of ED practices of the manufacturing industry based on the Global Reporting Initiative
