Does Emotional Intelligence Influence an Employee's Job Satisfaction? An Empirical Assessment

    Get PDF
Since job performance is a function of job satisfaction and emotional intelligence, the current research empirically evaluates the association between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction of respondents. The research tests whether emotional intelligence significantly affect job satisfaction or not. The research is based on a quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional survey. The sample size is 140 and they were selected through the convenience sample method. Primary data was collected using a self-designed questionnaire in the Likert scale format, and were administered at the job places of the respondents. Data were analysed using the Pearson correlation and the linear regression analysis methods, and presented in Tables. The research findings of the study indicated a positive significant association between overall emotional intelligence and job satisfaction. There is also a positive significant association between three out of the four dimensions of emotional intelligence evaluated and job satisfaction. The findings indicate that respondents higher on the emotional intelligence scale are more satisfied than respondents lower on the emotional intelligence scale. The findings imply that emotional intelligence is a multidimensional construct. Management of organisations should consider implementing measures that will improve emotional intelligence to ensure job satisfaction of workers. Further study should consider the causal analysis and also introduce control variables such as gender and age to determine if the current findings will be replicated

    Get PDF
Due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, most schools in Mizoram shifted to online learning platforms to continue with their academic activities. A survey was carried out using a questionnaire to identify the effectiveness of online learning. 356 students and 60 teachers from different secondary and higher secondary schools in Mizoram responded to this survey. To find the effectiveness of online learning, percentages were calculated to analyze the data and the mathematical consensus (Cns) were calculated. Students’ preferences and perceptions on various attributes of online classes were analyzed. The results indicated that most of the students and teachers were not quite ready to shift to online learning platforms. Bad internet connectivity, low data limits, slow data speed, demand for costly devices such as smart phones and related software and connectivity were problems faced in conducting online classes. It was found that the students preferred using smart phones to follow online classes, and mathematics was the most difficult subject to learn or teach in online classes

    Get PDF
Innovative techno-blended teaching methodologies are needed for 21st-century classrooms. This paper reports on the introduction of a techno-blended device for mathematics teaching in South African senior secondary classrooms. The research sample included 12 third-year mathematics education student teachers from a rural university. A qualitative case study design was employed. Participants were purposively selected. Data collection methods included non-participatory observation and in-depth individual interviews. The TPACK model and the Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching Framework guided the analysis of the data. The study found that the mathematics student teachers successfully implemented GammaTutor in their classrooms, thus demonstrating their proficiency and aptitude in utilising technology in the learning environment. The GammaTutor device also aided in teaching and learning mathematics by simplifying mathematical ideas for learners. Furthermore, it enabled the development of learner discourse as a crucial component for developing learners' problem-solving skills. Since the mathematics student teachers engaged the learners with a variety of mathematical exercises using the GammaTutor technology, the integration of GammaTutor in the mathematics classroom exhibited learner-centred provisioning. The study proposes a teaching model for creating innovative teaching spaces in rural schools in South Africa

    Get PDF
A number of social networking platforms have emerged as a result of the development of information and communication technology which have become increasingly user-friendly and full with valuable features. The social networking site with most users is Facebook. Teenagers, particularly college students use Facebook most frequently to study, gain information, entertain themselves and connect with others through self-disclosing personal information on the Facebook profile page. This quantitative study aimed to analyze the attitude of pedagogical students regarding self-disclosure on Facebook as represented through cognition, emotion and behavior concerning academic achievement. The survey was completed by 535university student’s majority in pedagogy. There were 41 students who used it for less than three years between three to five years by 218 students and 276 students who use it more than five years. The questionnaire was self-reported by participants to assess university students' attitudes toward self-disclosure on Facebook. The results indicate that pedagogical students with excellent academic achievement and more than five years of Facebook experience had the highest-level attitude toward self-disclosure on Facebook. The results indicate a positive relationship between cognition, emotion and influence factors students' Facebook attitudes. Future research on methods that enhance student positive disclosure can benefit from this study. Future research should examine how self-disclosure on Facebook relates to other aspects, such as Facebook usage time, financial state and perception of advantages and its disadvantages of Facebook in order to evaluate students' attitudes objectively

    Get PDF
An alignment of textbooks with their corresponding syllabuses contributes to effective learning. This study examined the alignment of the Ethiopian early grade (grades 1-4) mathematics textbooks (EEGMTB) with their corresponding syllabuses. Four early grade mathematics teachers at Halaba Zone of South Nations and Nationalities Peoples Reginal State (SNNPRS) participated in this study. In addition, curriculum experts at the zone and the ministry of education (MoE) participated. Data were collected through interview and document analysis by using a content analysis protocol developed by reviewing different studies on textbook quality (Bhatti, Jumani, & Bilal, 2015; Fuchs, 2013; Hashmi, Hussain, & Shoaib, 2018; Sunday, 2014; Taye, 2011), and validated. The data were analyzed qualitatively and the percentage was used to summarize the findings. The findings of this study depict that EEGMTBs were not completely aligned with the corresponding syllabuses as expected. Therefore, the study recommends special focus to be given to the alignment of textbooks with the corresponding syllabuses, especially in considering the learning outcomes when developing the textbooks. The study also suggests further research on the adequacy of the contents of early grade textbooks to equip early children with the necessary knowledge and skills expected at the level

The Relationship between Argumentation Skills and Cognitive Flexibility of Pre-Service Science Teachers

    Get PDF
The present study aims to investigate the relationship between pre-service science teachers' argumentation skills and cognitive flexibility levels. Within the scope of the study, an argumentation-based science laboratory application was applied to first year science teaching students for 4 weeks. The arguments were assessed by eight faculty members and doctoral students. The Argumentation Assessment Rubric (Choi, 2008) was used to assess the quality of the written arguments. The quality of the arguments and descriptions used by the students in the reports were evaluated as total writing scores. The “Cognitive Flexibility Inventory” developed by Dennis and Vander Wal (2010) was employed to assess the cognitive flexibility levels of pre-service teachers. Simple Correlation analysis and Simple Linear Regression analysis methods were used to determine the relationship between the sub-dimensions of cognitive flexibility inventory and argumentation skills of pre-service science teachers and the effect of cognitive flexibility levels on argumentation skills. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between pre-service teachers’ cognitive flexibility levels and argumentation skills

Multi-Poverty and Deprivation in Chad: Multidimensional Approach Using the Fuzzy Set Theory

    Get PDF
The general objective of this paper is to analyze the configuration of poverty in Chad using a multidimensional approach, while previous work has for the most part favored the monetary or one-dimensional approach. The multidimensional approach adopted is based on the fuzzy-set also called the fuzzy set theory. To achieve this objective, multidimensional poverty indices are calculated by the formulations of membership functions called "totally fuzzy approach (TF)" by Cerioli and Zani. They are broken down according to the Camilo Dagum’s method. The data are the Household Budget and Consumption Surveys in 2003 (ECOSIT2) of 7,008 households and in 2011 (ECOSIT3) of 10,200 households. The results show that the multidimensional poverty index (fuzzy poverty index) is 48.47% in 2003 and increases unlike in 2011 to 58.89% while monetary poverty is 55% in 2003 and 46. 67% in 2011. In Chad, in all areas, poverty persists. The energy dimension is the one where we find more poor people followed in descending order of housing, sanitation and education. We recommend that the public authorities prioritize, within the framework of the fight against poverty, the electrification of all regions because energy contributes more than 90% to the construction of poverty in 2003 and 2011, etc

Effect of CEO Duality and Board Characteristics on the Choice of Sustainability Report Format of Listed Firms in India

    Get PDF
Stakeholders have raised concerns about how business operations affect the environment. Firms have responded through integrated reporting (financial and non-financial), which seeks to provide additional information about firm activities to improve stakeholders’ trust. This study examines the effect of chief executive officer (CEO) duality and board characteristics on the choice of the sustainability report format in India. The study uses an inclusive sample of 800 firm-year observations between 2010 and 2019. The study applies the binary probit to analyze the data from the Indian Stock Exchange. We find that CEO duality increases the likelihood of choosing integrated reporting over stand-alone sustainability reporting. This study suggests that the combined role leads to poor governance and contributes to a choice that presents less information to stakeholders. The second finding shows that independent directors are more likely to choose stand-alone reporting over integrated reporting. The study suggests that the internal policing responsibility of independent directors supports a report format that communicates more information to stakeholders. Finally, the total number of directors is insignificant in terms of the sustainability report format. Our study adds novelty to research because previous studies have only examined CEO and sustainability. However, this study is the first to investigate CEO duality and board characteristics in the choice of a sustainability report format

Auditors’ Perspective of Audit Quality during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence from the United Arab Emirates

    Get PDF
During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, external auditors have faced unforeseen logistical challenges as they had to audit financial statements remotely. Definitively, the new circumstances had various impacts on audit quality. This study explores the effect of social distancing owing to the COVID-19 outbreak on the quality of financial audits in the United Arab Emirates. To this end, we conducted 11 semi-structured interviews with audit partners and directors from BIG 4 audit firms. The findings from the content analysis of these interviews show that during the pandemic, external auditors faced different challenges in maintaining the quality of financial audits. Indeed, the lockdown imposed by the pandemic has largely affected materiality and risk assessments, audit procedures and collection of evidence, and auditors’ performance and efficiency efforts. It also increased cyber risk. These conclusions stress the importance of investing in blockchain and artificial intelligence to resolve similar challenges in the future. Blockchain technology would, in fact, be an ultimate solution in similar circumstances as it permits enhancing the efficiency and adaptability of communication between auditors and auditee firms, which can in turn promote the quality of the financial reporting and audit

The Impact of South Africa’s Total Early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity Rate on Entrepreneurial Attitudes and Behavior

    Get PDF
Given that entrepreneurship scholars use various approaches to measure entrepreneurial success, which leads to inconsistent findings, in this study we investigate the impact that South Africa’s total early-stage entrepreneurial activity (TESEA) rate has on the entrepreneurial attitudes and behavior of South Africans and their reactions to different macroeconomic factors. Secondary datasets were elicited from the World Bank’s world development indicators and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) database from 2003–2014. Using a generalized linear model (GLM) poisson regression, we affirmed the statistical significance of these relationships, as well as enhanced the validity and reliability of the quantitative estimation procedure. We found that the TESEA rate is positively associated with a higher ease of doing business and entrepreneurial intention level. Furthermore, we found that when entrepreneurship is viewed as a good career choice, and given media visibility, the TESEA rate increases, and vice versa. It was also observed that the GDP per capita (which relies on efficiency, innovation and optimal utilization of market knowledge), as well as the level of economic freedom in South Africa, positively impacts the nation’s TESEA rate. Likewise, we found that the unemployment rate is positively associated with the TESEA rate of South Africa. South Africa’s TESEA rate is influenced by a combination of factors due to the dynamic nature of individual traits. However, the TESEA rate has a remarkable impact on South Africa’s entrepreneurial decision making. This implies that a targeted approach is more relevant when implementing both private and government policy initiatives
