    Stigma towards people with mental illness and community mental health ideology among university students: A comparative study

    The study examines the difference between the stigma among psychology and non-psychology students towards people with mental illness and to find out their ideology towards community mental health services. A cross-sectional study was conducted among university students. All together (N= 300) participants were recruited through the quota convenient sampling. CAMI (Community Attitude towards the Mentally Ill) scale was used in this research, assess four types of attitudes towards mental illness (i.e., Authoritarianism, Benevolence, Social restrictiveness, and Community mental health ideology). The findings of this study show a significant difference between the attitudes of psychology and non-psychology students. Both the subscales, authoritarianism and social restrictiveness conclude that non-psychology students showed more authoritative and restrictive behavior towards mentally ill people and are less oriented towards community mental health ideology as compared to psychology students. However, psychology students showed less benevolence as compared to non-psychology students towards mentally ill people. Additional findings indicated that the level of authoritarianism, social restrictiveness, and benevolence is high among males as compared to females. The study highlights the need for society to develop a plan and action to change stigma attached to mental illness at both institutional and community levels

    An analysis of the learning outcomes of the 2018 geography curriculum for 9th and 10th grades according to Webb’s depth of knowledge

    There are many taxonomies in education related to the cognitive learning domain. This study aimed to analyze the learning outcomes in the 9th and 10th grade 2018 geography curriculum according to Webb's depth of knowledge. Document analysis was used in the study. The geography curriculum was analyzed by considering the four levels of Webb’s depth of knowledge and the scope of the acts and learning outcomes identified for social sciences. In this context, the levels of 56 learning outcomes in the 2018 geography curriculum were analyzed by grade and unit. It was found that the learning outcomes in Webb's depth of knowledge were not distributed evenly across grades, units and levels. Half of the 9th and 10th grade outcomes were at Level 2, while the other half were distributed between Level 1 and Level 3. At Level 4, there was only one outcome in Grade 9. Level 2 was predominant in the learning outcomes of the Natural Systems unit in Grade 9 and of the Human Systems unit in Grade 10. Tasks with a high level of complexity were more common in Grade 10. "The Environment and Society" and "The Global Environment: Regions and Countries" units did not have learning outcomes at all levels. The characteristics of the course content were effective in determining the level of the learning outcomes. For a holistic evaluation of the 2018 geography curriculum in terms of Webb's Depth of Knowledge, it is recommended to examine how the 11th and 12th-grade outcomes were distributed

    An assessment of water quality and the locals' perception of coastal lagoon pollution in ghana: A case study of chemu lagoon in tema

    The Chemu lagoon is not immune to pollution through chemical waste contamination, refuse disposals, and untreated household sewage, and hence has been chosen as a case study. This paper aims to assess the lagoon's level of pollution. Chemical analysis of water samples, field observations, and a structured survey questionnaire was used to assess the state of the lagoon. The study revealed that the Chemu lagoon has inferior water quality as most of the parameters evaluated were above the acceptable standards of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Significant differences in concentrations of water quality parameters were established between seasons. The study found that respondents were aware of the lagoon’s polluted state and attributed pollution to siltation and waste dumping. This leads to offensive odour, livelihood losses emphasising a reduction in fishing activities, and outbreaks of diseases in the area. Conclusively, stakeholders have not prioritised mitigating pollution of the lagoon. The study recommends that the Environmental Health and Waste Management Departments of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly intensify house-to-house hygiene education and sanitary inspection in the area. There should be education and sensitisation on proper waste management practices in the area

    Implementation of mobile augmented reality on physics learning in junior high school students

    Technology has an essential role in the educational field. Technology-based mobile has the potential to improve education through Augmented Reality (AR). This study investigates the effect of mobile augmented reality on physics learning achievement and students' opinions on using this technology. The study used a convergent parallel pattern from mixed-method models in which quantitative and qualitative data are collected simultaneously and analyzed independently. The study participants are 64 (7th-grade students) who are learning solar system concepts at one of the junior high schools in West Java Province, Indonesia. This study collects pre- and post-test data as quantitative data to analyze students' learning achievement using the normalized gain score. The result showed that the students using mobile augmented reality have higher criteria for learning achievement than those using textbooks. The qualitative data was collected from interviewed students after using mobile augmented reality and analyzing using descriptive analysis. The results of the student opinion state that augmented reality is a new learning environment that effectively helps them understand physics concepts, enhances students' learning achievement and helps concretize abstract concepts through visual 3D simulations. Moreover, according to the study, students find it easier to understand physics concepts after using mobile augmented reality

    Environmental attitudes of Chinese students in higher education institutions

    This study investigates the influence of environmental attitudes of Chinese students in higher education institutions (HEIs). It included 988 students at ten higher education institutions and administered an “environmental attitudes inventory" questionnaire to investigate gender, grade level of study, institution level, parental educational background, scholarships, annual household income, students' leadership experience and the extent to which variables such as participation in environment-related courses affect students' attitudes towards the environment. Furthermore, the study relied on descriptive and analytical methods. The results show significant differences in grade, school level and parents' educational backgrounds on students' environmental attitudes. In contrast, gender, scholarship, annual family income and student leader experience related to the environment did not appear as significant factors. This paper suggests that education policymakers incorporate these influences into a vision of environmental educational reform to inform the remedial actions needed by higher education institutions

    Development of a safety education program using simulator fire extinguishers in Korea: Focusing on elementary school students

    Safety education aims to promote safe habits through experience-oriented education that combines knowledge, skills  and attitudes. However, in situations where experience-oriented safety education is challenging, realistic content created through technological advancements can indirectly function as an excellent safety education tool that allows for individual safety experiences. This study conducted a safety education program for 34 elementary school students using the most commonly used realistic safety education content in Korea, the 'simulator fire extinguisher,' four times. Safety knowledge tests and safety problem-solving ability tests were used as measuring tools and statistical significance was verified through paired sample t-tests. This study demonstrated that the safety education program using the 'simulator fire extinguisher' was effective in improving safety knowledge and problem-solving abilities . The average score of elementary school students increased from 8.47 to 9.23 in safety knowledge tests and from 4.26 to 4.64 in safety problem-solving ability tests. These results were statistically significant (p < 0.001)

    Evaluating model teacher education and training at Vietnam's universities of technology and education

    The traditional educational paradigm has become outdated as a result of changes in both the cultural and socioeconomic setting. A more sustainable and acceptable teacher is needed in education. A quantitative study was conducted. 95 administrators and teachers at the University of Technology and Education participated in this study with the aim of analyzing the current status of the teacher education model at the institution. According to the findings of the study, the model for educator preparation has been put into practice primarily through the processes of planning, organizing and directing activities related to educator preparation as well as inspecting and assessing the quality of education. The outcomes of the study indicate that it is essential to design educational programs that are appropriate for the present context. In particular, the study suggests that one of the most important steps towards achieving success is to incorporate technology into teaching methods. The process of educating teachers with the right degree of expertise and skills should be emphasized by educators and policymakers by developing relationships with other educational institutions and allowing teachers to participate in internships

    An examination of teacher collaboration in professional learning communities and collaborative teaching practices

    The present study aims to examine the influence of teacher collaboration within professional learning communities (PLCs) and collaborative teaching practices on both the professional growth and academic achievement of students. The study employed a mixed-methods research design that  incorporated both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. This research comprises both survey responses and interview transcripts obtained from K-12 educators who are currently engaged in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) or collaborative teaching methodologies. The findings of this study have the potential to enhance the existing literature on teacher collaboration and furnish educators, policymakers, and researchers with valuable perspectives to steer optimal strategies for promoting effective teacher collaboration in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and collaborative teaching approaches. The objective of the research is to investigate the influence of teacher collaboration within Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and collaborative teaching practices on the development of professional skills and academic achievements of students. The results of this study underscore the importance of recognizing the advantageous effects that collaborative teaching methodologies can have on the academic achievements of students. This necessitates the provision of adequate time for collaborative activities, encouraging supportive leadership within educational institutions, and allocating sufficient resources for collaboration

    Interdisciplinary education in the context of protection of water resources: A case study in Vietnam

    The incorporation of interdisciplinary education, a topic of significant global interest, is increasingly being recognized as a key aspect of educational innovation in Vietnam. This recognition extends to several fields, including STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.This research aims to design and implement a STEM situation associated with the context of water protection in Vietnam for 10th-grade students in which students mobilize the knowledge of Physics (specific gravity, Archimedes' principle) and Mathematics (volume) to design a salinometer. This device measures the salinity of the water. The research methodology is based on the observed increase in saline levels in the coastal regions of Vietnam in recent years, which has had a substantial impact on agriculture and the livelihoods of millions of people. This methodology aims to provide realistic scenarios for students to address and resolve these problems. A total of forty students in the 10th grade were involved in a teaching situation that consisted of five distinct phases. Forty 10th-grade students participated in a teaching situation conducted in five phases. The results showed that the situation helped students strengthen and connect their physics and mathematics knowledge, create a vibrant learning atmosphere, enhance communication, and develop problem-solving competency. Furthermore, the teaching situation also needs to be revised regarding the measurement practices of Vietnamese students. The situation contributes to educating students' awareness of current events, protecting Vietnamese water resources, and the importance of sustainable development. In addition, we can use the same teaching process as in this research to develop other STEM teaching situations

    Impact of working while studying on university students’ academic performance in Egypt during the COVID-19 pandemic and transition to online learning

    In the context of online education, which has been growing as a common approach, this paper examines the impact of working while studying on university students’ academic performance, namely Cumulative GPA (CGPA), as a rising trend in Egypt, especially after the pandemic and the shift into online learning. The research followed an exploratory survey method, namely a quantitative approach, with a sample of 361 students randomly selected using the convenience sampling method from a total of 3326 students, both working and non-working, from years 2 to 4 across the four schools at Nile University – Cairo, Egypt. The study examines a cause-and-effect relationship between working students and their CGPA. Literature points out that with online education becoming a conventional mode, there has been an increase in “working while studying” in Egypt, which requires further investigation. Thus, this paper bridges this empirical gap as the first study of its kind by studying the case of Nile University working students and the effect of working while studying on their academic performance and their ability to strike a work-life balance. The study revealed a slightly negative relationship between working while studying and students’ CGPA compared to non-working, as well as a negative effect on their work-life balance. The findings imply that a new mindset in the pedagogical system is needed, combining new assessment methods and modes of delivery to accommodate the rising trend. The study has its own limitations, focusing on Egypt and specifically Nile University students
