    Strategy Formulation and Service Operations in the Big Data Age: The Essentialness of Technology, People, and Ethics

    Studies have shown that the sensible operation of big data may yield powerful insights that can improve the organisations’ strategic decision-making process and contribute to achieving an enhanced competitive advantage. In this manuscript, we explore the promise of big data in redefining strategy in service operations management (SOM) by means of investigating a rich range of bibliographic material. The SOM field has a plethora of research opportunities to capitalise on, which are enhanced by the presence of big data. SOM research in the big data age implies a shift in attention from being increasingly integrative across themes to being integrative across multiple disciplines, requiring the expertise of and tuning between different actors and expertise domains. Our aim is to stimulate debate in the field and set out a renewed research agenda by means of calling for additional considerations of strategic aspects, namely technology, people, and ethics, that can help guide and move the field forward

    Why were COVID-19 infections lower than expected amongst people who are homeless in London, UK in 2020? Exploring community perspectives and the multiple pathways of health inequalities in pandemics

    High rates of COVID-19 infections and deaths amongst people who are homeless in London, UK were feared. Rates however stayed much lower than expected throughout 2020; an experience that compares to other settings globally. This study sought a community level perspective to explore this rate of infections, and through this explore relationships between COVID-19 and existing health inequalities. Analyses are reported from ongoing qualitative studies on COVID-19 and homeless health service evaluation in London, UK. Repeated in-depth telephone interviews were implemented with people experiencing homelessness in London (n=17; 32 interviews in total) as well as street outreach workers, nurses and hostel staff (n=10) from September 2020 to early 2021. Thematic analysis generated three themes to explore peoples’ experiences of, and perspectives on, low infections: people experiencing homelessness following, creating and breaking social distancing and hygiene measures; social distancing in the form of social exclusion as a long-running feature of life; and a narrative of ‘street immunity’ resulting from harsh living conditions. Further study is needed to understand how these factors combine to prevent COVID-19 and how they relate to different experiences of homelessness. This community perspective can ensure that emerging narratives of COVID-19 prevention success don’t ignore longer running causes of homelessness and reinforce stigmatising notions of people who are homeless as lacking agency. Our findings aid theorisation of how health inequalities shape pandemic progression: severe exclusion may substantially delay epidemics in some communities, although with considerable other non-COVID-19 impacts.     Does atmospheric dimethyldiselenide play a role in reducing COVID-19 mortality?

    Loss of pulmonary dimethydiselenide via exhalation may help explain a significantly higher death rate from COVID-19 in states with low environmental (atmospheric) Se concentrations.[Display omitted]•US residents only showed a relatively small difference in plasma/serum Se.•Se concentration in alfalfa leaves in US states modelled environmental Se exposure.•States with low alfalfa Se had a higher death rate from COVID-19 than other states.•Atmospheric dimethyldiselenide may reflect Se concentration in alfalfa leaves.•Lung exposure to dimethyldiselenide which activates Nrf2 may explain our results.Environmental selenium (Se) distribution in the US is uneven, yet US residents appear to have a relatively narrow range of serum Se concentrations, according to the NHANES III survey data; this is probably due to the modern food-distribution system. In the US, Se concentration in alfalfa leaves has been used as a proxy for regional Se exposure (low, medium or high, corresponding to ≤ 0.05, 0.06–0.10 and ≥ 0.11 ppm respectively). Se in plants, soil, water, and bacteria can be transformed into volatile dimethyldiselenide, which can be inhaled and excreted via the lung. Hence, pulmonary Se exposure may be different in states with different atmospheric Se levels. We found a significantly higher death rate from COVID-19 in low-Se states than in medium-Se or high-Se states, though the case densities of these states were not significantly different. Because inhaled dimethyldiselenide is a potent inducer of nuclear-factor erythroid 2 p45-related factor 2 (Nrf2), exposure to higher atmospheric dimethyldiselenide may increase Nrf2-dependent antioxidant defences, reducing the activation of NFκB by SARS-CoV-2 in the lung, thereby decreasing cytokine activation and COVID-19 severity. Atmospheric dimethyldiselenide may thereby play a role in COVID-19 mortality, although the extent of its involvement is unclear

    Assessment of repeated referencemeasurements to inform the validity ofoptical breast spectroscopy

    Mammographic breast density is a strong breast cancer risk factor, and its routine clinical measurement could potentially be used to identify women at higher risk of breast cancer and/or monitor primary prevention strategies. Previous reports of optical breast spectroscopy (OBS), a novel approach to measuring breast density, demonstrated that it is safe (no ionizing radiation), portable, low-cost, and does not require image interpretation but have been limited to small, single-center studies. Reference measurements taken on a phantom breast prior to and after each woman’s OBS assessment are required for the calibration of the system transfer function as a part of processing participant data. To inform the validity of participant data, a detailed description of the reference measurements and a repeatability analysis of these measurements taken before and after participant assessment is presented. Reference measurements for OBS from 539 women aged 18–40 years were obtained as a part of a high-throughput epidemiological pilot study. Of these, measurements from 20 women with no useable data due to device failure (3.7%) were excluded and from another 12 women due to user error. The intra-class correlation (ICC) within complete pairs of reference data (taken before and after assessment) was high (all ICC > 0.84). The analysis presented here confirms the OBS participant data as valid for use in ongoing epidemiological research, providing further supporting evidence of OBS as a measure of breast density. A novel method of measuring breast density is needed to bridge large gaps in the knowledge of breast density in younger women and its relation to later-life breast cancer risk

    Using Real-Time Kinematics Algorithm in Mission Critical Communication for Accurate Positioning and Time Correction over 5G and Beyond Networks

    —At 5G and beyond networks, accurate localization services and nanosecond time synchronization are crucial to enabling mission-critical wireless communications technologies and techniques such as autonomous vehicles and distributed multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems. This paper investigates how to improve wireless time synchronization by studying time correction based on the Real-Time Kinematics (RTK) positioning algorithm. Using the multiple Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver references and the proposed binary GNSS satellite formation to reduce the effect of the ionosphere and troposphere delays and recede the measurement phase-range and pseudorange errors. As a result, it improves user equipment's (UE) localization and measures the time difference between the Base Station (BS) and the UE local clocks. The results show that the positioning accuracy has been increased, and a millimetre accuracy has been achieved while attaining the sub-nanosecond time error (TE) between the UE's and BS local clocks

    Implementation of green infrastructure for improving the building environment of elderly care centres

    The elderly population is relatively vulnerable to air pollution and thermal stress due to their low mobility and high prevalence of chronic disorders. Appropriate green infrastructure (GI) deployment can improve both the indoor and outdoor air quality and thermal environments of elderly care centres (ECCs), yet a systematic review on this topic area is lacking. This review aims to fill this gap by investigating the impacts of GI on ECC building environment and presents the approaches for integrating GI into the building environment design. We discussed the significance of linking air quality with the thermal environment to ECCs and the effects of GI on the elderly's physical health. We investigated the key design considerations for GI in ECC buildings (e.g., spatial layout, species, aesthetics and fire prevention). Also, the diversity of monitoring and modelling approaches for evaluating the benefits of GI in indoor and outdoor environments was assessed. Finally, we evaluated the associated challenges and provided design recommendations for improving the environments in and around the ECC buildings (e.g., bedrooms, indoor gardens, green roofs and courtyards). The quantitative evidence for linking GI with indoor and outdoor air pollution and extreme heat around the ECC buildings are limited. However, this evidence-base is important for providing generic advice to the building designers and the elderly. Further studies such as the evaluation criteria and monitoring standard are required to develop holistic design recommendations for ECC buildings. The empirical research about the social and economic impacts is also necessary to facilitate the sustainable development of the ageing societies

    Learning hybrid ranking representation for person re-identification

    Contemporary person re-identification (re-id) methods mostly compute independentlya feature representation of each person image in the query set and the gallery set. This strategy fails to consider any ranking context information of each probe image in the query set represented implicitly by the whole gallery set. Some recent re-ranking re-id methods therefore propose to take a post-processing strategy to exploit such contextual information for improving re-id matching performance. However, post-processing is independent of model training without jointly optimising the re-id feature and the ranking context information for better compatibility. In this work, for the first time, we show that the appearance feature and the ranking context information can be jointly optimised for learning more discriminative representations and achieving superior matching accuracy. Specifically, we propose to learn a hybrid ranking representation for person re-id with a two-stream architecture: (1) In the external stream, we use the ranking list of each probe image to learn plausible visual variations among the top ranks from the gallery as the external ranking information; (2) In the internal stream, we employ the part-based fine-grained feature as the internal ranking information, which mitigates the harm of incorrect matches in the ranking list. Assembling these two streams generates a hybrid ranking representation for person matching. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method over the state-of-the-art methods on four large-scale re-id benchmarks (Market-1501, DukeMTMC-ReID, CUHK03 and MSMT17), under both supervised and unsupervised settings

    Reducing the Environmental Impact of Clothing: An Exploration of the Potential of Alternative Business Models

    Business models providing used clothing to consumers have the potential to increase the use of each garment and thereby reduce pressure on raw materials and primary production. This research used in-depth interviews complemented by a literature review to improve the understanding of the business models and the ways in which they can impact the environment. In total, the interviews were carried out with seven business owners and six experts in clothing sustainability, product lifespan extension, and circular business models. Examples of business models of interest include businesses selling secondhand clothes and businesses renting clothes to customers. A typology of business models is used to understand how each model impacts the environment and to highlight the factors that contribute most to the impacts that need to be managed. Business models vary in how they impact the environment, through differences in the way they manage transport, storage, and cleaning. Business models also vary in how successfully they reduce the environmental impacts from the production of new garments by increasing the number of times different wearers wear a garment and reducing the need to buy new garments. This effect is referred to as displacement, and the displacement rate provides an indication of the efficiency of reuse models in reducing total volumes of throughput. Indeed, some new business models may not have reduced throughput as a goal at all, and appraisal of this is crucial to understanding the environmental impacts of the various models

    What are the consequences of reintegrating Rudolf Laban’s Rosicrucianism in the practice of Laban Movement Analysis for actors-in-training and their teachers?

    This PhD research proposes a reintegration of Rudolf Laban’s Rosicrucian thinking into the practice of Laban Movement Analysis for actors-in-training. That Laban was a member of a masonic order, and interested in Rosicrucianism in particular, is not unknown, but there has yet to be a full analysis of how this aspect of his life informed and influenced the development of his theories and concepts in practice. Historically, the practice of LMA has been separated from its spiritual context and aims. Consequently, the broader spiritual and philosophical contexts of Laban’s theories have received very little attention in literature and almost none at all in studio-based practice of his theories. One key aim of this project is to articulate what might be lost in this disintegration – both for the actor-in-training and the movement trainer. Through creative and pedagogic practice this PhD re-examines Laban’s published and unpublished archived notes, drawings, and manuscripts. The research offers an expanded understanding of Laban’s previously overlooked works in the archive and returns them with a renewed understanding of Laban’s spiritual thinking, and their relevance to Laban studies. Laban’s theories are analysed alongside texts from both esoteric and exoteric scholars, including Rudolf Steiner, which outline core Rosicrucian Principles. Through a mixture of scholarly analysis and studio-based practice, the research marks the points of contact between the parameters of LMA and Rosicrucian principles illuminating Laban’s theories as having their foundation in Rosicrucian thinking. The context for this work is specifically for acting and the corporeal experiences of such theoretical embodiments for actors-in-training and their Laban movement teachers. As such, the practice lifts discourses about Laban’s mystical thinking out of the purely theoretical domain (which has been predominant in the field) into contemporary creative and pedagogic practices. The thesis proposes that these hitherto unexamined aspects of Laban’s work reveal ‘hidden’ aspects of Laban’s theories in which he attempts to elucidate and bring into material form the invisible aspects of the ‘silent world’ of the mover. Additionally, the research argues for the value of the reintegration of Laban’s ethico-spiritual outlook in LMA and looks toward the social impact of embodied spirituality. The outcome of the research suggests that spirituality is inherently social, embodied and is illuminated in movement thinking, in particular through the somatic awareness of the mover and witness/observer of movement. The research contends that Laban movement which engages the soma-spiritual is valuable not only for dance and performance practices, but for all, in everyday movements of the body and the mover’s connection with others and their environment.
