Inkjet-Printed Ag/a-TiO2/Ag Neuromorphic Nanodevice Based on Functionalized Ink
This study aims to contribute to the burgeoning field of brain-inspired computing by expanding it beyond conventional fabrication methods. Herein, the obstacles toward the effective inkjet printing process are encountered and the electrical characteristics are explored, providing new insights into the reliability aspects of fully printed Ag/a-TiO2/Ag electronic synapses. The versatility of the approach is further enhanced by the highly stable in-house-developed a-TiO2 ink, exhibiting optimal shelf life of five months and repeatable jetting, producing layers with nanoscale thickness resolution. Most importantly, device electrical characterization reveals synaptic dynamics, leading to activity-dependent conductance state retention and adaptation characteristics, implying inherent learning capabilities. The synaptic dynamics are attained by solely adjusting the duty cycle of the applied pulsed voltage trigger, while keeping amplitude and polarity fixed, a method readily compatible with realistic applications. Furthermore, I-V analysis demonstrates a dynamic range dependence on a-TiO2 layer thickness and conduction mechanism that is akin to the conventionally developed electronic TiO2 synapses. The developed devices provide a time- and cost-effective ecologically benign alternative toward biomimetic signal processing for future flexible neural networks
"A museum of ethnology and philology": rediscovering an early work of Caucasian linguistics
Cyril Graham’s The Avar Language, a treatise consisting of a linguistic description and an extensive English-Avar wordlist, originally appeared in the late nineteenth century in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and has been republished in the early twenty-first century in book form, with Russian translation and commentary by Boris Ataev of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Makhachkala. Welcoming Ataev’s contribution in making it accessible to the modern Russophone audience, I discuss the linguistic qualities and shortcomings of Graham’s article as well as the complex and revealing history of its composition. Engagingly written and in some respects perceptive, while in other respects outmoded even in its own time, it provides an insight into the early development of Caucasian linguistic study in the West
An Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation Algorithm Based on FSM-DM Cascaded AO Architecture for FSO Communications
Free-space optics (FSO) communication enjoys desirable modulation rates at unexploited frequency bands, however, its application is hindered by atmospheric turbulence which causes phase shifting in laser links. Although a single deformable mirror (DM) adaptive optics (AO) system is a good solution, its performance remains unsatisfactory as the proportion of tilts aberrations becomes relatively high. This condition happens when the incident angle of the laser beam for the optical receiver dynamically shifts. To tackle this problem, we introduce a fast steering mirror (FSM), DM cascaded AO architecture, based upon which we also propose an atmospheric turbulence compensation algorithm. In this paper, we compare the compensation ability of FSM and DM towards tilts aberrations. Furthermore, we gain model matrices for FSM and DM from testbed and simulatively verify the effectiveness of our work. For a Kolmogorov theory-based atmospheric turbulence disturbed incident laser beam where the tilt components take up 80% of the total proportion of wavefront aberrations, our proposed architecture compensates the input wavefront to a residual wavefront root mean square (RMS) of 116 wavelength, compared to 16 wavelength for single DM architecture. The study intends to overcome atmospheric turbulence and has the potential to guide the development of future FSO communications
Identifying as Someone who Avoids Virus Transmission Strengthens Physical Distancing Habit-Behaviour Relationships: A Longitudinal Multi-National Study During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Physical distancing remains an important initiative to curb COVID-19, and virus transmission more broadly. This exploratory study investigated how physical distancing behaviour changed during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether it was associated with identity with virus transmission avoidance and physical distancing habit strength. In a longitudinal, multinational study with fortnightly repeated-assessments, associations and moderation effects were considered for both overall (person-level means) and occasion-specific deviations in habit and identity. Participants (N=586, M age = 42, 79% female) self-reported physical distancing behavioural frequency, physical distancing habit strength, and identity with avoiding virus transmission. Physical distancing followed a cubic trajectory, with initial high engagement decreasing rapidly before increasing again near study end. Physical distancing was associated with both overall and occasion-specific virus transmission avoidant identity and physical distancing habit strength. People with strong virus transmission avoidant identity engaged in physical distancing frequently regardless of fluctuations in habit strength. However, for those with weaker virus transmission avoidant identity, physical distancing was strongly aligned with fluctuations in habit strength. To enhance engagement in physical distancing, public health messaging might fruitfully target greater or more salient virus-transmission avoidance identity, and stronger physical distancing habit.</p
Engineered Electromagnetic Metasurfaces in Wireless Communications: Applications, Research Frontiers and Future Directions
Surface electromagnetics (SEM), as a sub-discipline of electromagnetic (EM) science, is strongly linked with the ability to manipulate an arbitrary EM wavefront. This exceptional capability of manipulating the surface-bound and free-space EM waves for the guidance and control of anomalous reflection, refraction and transmission has catapulted an abundance of new research frontiers. This has resulted in the realization of many novel applications for modern real-life platforms and the introduction of several new modelling techniques and engineering approaches to give rise to some unconventional devices. Consequently, EM engineered metasurfaces, due to numerous emerging applications, are beginning to revolutionize the EM industry. Recently, the practical usage of metasurfaces has gained a substantial amount of interest and traction for a wide range of applications in microwave, millimetre-wave (mmWave), Terahertz (THz) and even optical wavelengths. This tutorial is aimed at presenting a plethora of EM metasurface applications and research frontiers to illustrate a broader impact of SEM in real-world platforms, advanced communication systems and new devices
Moisture migration in multicomponent food systems: Investigating the effect of temperature
Moisture migration in manufactured foods can significantly affect their quality, nutrition, sensory attributes and shelf life. It can occur between foods and the surrounding atmosphere or between different compartments of manufactured foods when they have different water activities. Currently, most of the published research focuses on room temperature conditions. In this research, the temperature dependence of important material mass transport properties is studied considering sub-zero temperatures as well. To achieve this, experimental data at different temperatures were obtained and analysed using mathematical models.The effect of temperature on moisture migration in multicomponent food systems can subsequently be assessed using a one-dimensional model which was developed for this research. This model can consider food systems comprising one or more dry materials in contact with a wet material wrapped in a moisture impermeable packaging and was validated against previously published experimental data. Using this model, moisture migration in the wafer of a manufactured ice cream cone as a function of storage temperature and time was assessed. It was observed that while the wafer is anticipated to lose its crispness during the time kept in factory cold store, the average moisture content would still remain below the threshold for a wafer to be considered “soggy”
Causal explanations for patient engagement with primary care services in Saudi Arabia: a realist review protocol
Saudi Arabia (SA) has a rapidly developing universal healthcare system which is maturing from its hospital focused origins. However, health service usage suggests that up to 65% of the cases seen in emergency departments were classified as non-urgent and could have been appropriately managed in primary healthcare (PHC) settings. Primary care development in SA has lagged behind secondary care, and evidence suggests that Saudi citizens are currently ambivalent or dissatisfied with their PHC services. Previous research has focused on the quality and patient satisfaction of PHC services in SA. Yet, uncertainty still exists about causal explanations for patient engagement with PHC services and what refinements are needed for PHC. Less attention has been paid to how patient engagement strategies might work differently, which is increasingly recognised as important in PHC services. The aim of this review is to understand the causal explanations for patient engagement with PHC and to generate theory of how the intended outcome of patient engagement with PHC in SA might be achieved through identified contexts and mechanisms.A realist review approach will be used to synthesise the evidence. Databases including Medline, EMBASE and CINAHL will be searched. Literature will be included if it has relevance to the research question, and is trustworthy in nature. All document types will be screened including peer reviewed articles, relevant grey literature and related media items. All study types will be included. Stakeholders' feedback will also inform our review. A realist approach is suitable for this review because patient engagement with PHC services is a complex phenomenon. A range of different relevant data will be included in the following stages: developing an initial programme theory, searching the evidence, selecting data, extracting data, synthesising data and refining the programme theory.This study will use secondary data, and stakeholders are involved only to shape our understanding of the important contexts in patient engagement; hence, a formal ethics review is not required. Findings will be disseminated in a peer-reviewed journal and at relevant conferences.CRD42020175955
On the relationship between moisture uptake and mechanical property changes in a carbon fibre/epoxy composite
Polymer composite materials are widely used in marine applications where an understanding of the long-term performance is essential for economic, safety and durability requirements. Although moisture absorption in composites has been studied for many years, the relationship between the mechanisms of moisture absorption and consequent changes in material behaviour has received much less attention. Understanding degradation is necessary for developing lifetime assessments. In this work, long-term exposure of a unidirectional carbon fibre epoxy composite material in water has been investigated in relation to mechanical property changes and moisture uptake. Using diffusion modelling and microscopy of the fracture surfaces, it is possible to correlate water absorption to experimental data showing how the position of water in the material causes changes to flexural properties (modulus decreased by 14% and strength by 20%) and in the glass transition temperature, T g reduced by 18%. Flexural modulus has been shown to be most affected by water interaction with the fibre interface; T g by water interaction within the resin; and flexural strength equally by water interaction with both fibre interface and resin
PENGARUH ALAT KONTRASEPSI HORMONAL TERHADAP PRODUKSI ASI IBU MENYUSUI LITERATURE REVIEW
Alat kontrasepsi hormonal yang mengandung progesteron dan estrogen pada ibu menyusui dapat menghambat produksi ASI ibu menyusui. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui jenis jenis alat kontrasepsi hormonal yang dipakai oleh ibu menyusui, mengetahui pengaruh alat kontrasepsi hormonal pada produksi ASI ibu menyusui. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode review literatur. Penelusuran artikel menggunakan database Google Scholar, pubmed, sciencedirect, dan aplikasi Mendeley, dengan jumlah 20 buah artikel yang eligible untuk dianalisis. Publikasi artikel dari tahun 20211-2020. Hasil penelitian : terdapat 11 artikel yang membahas jenis2 penelitian dan artikel yang membahas pengaruh alat kontrasepsi hormonal pada produksi ASI ibu menyusui. 15. Kesimpulan: kontrasepsi yang banyak digunakan oleh ibu menyusui yaitu alat kontrasepsi suntik DMPA dan pil kombinasi, dan yang paling sedikit digunakan oleh ibu menyusui yaitu susuk/implan. Pengaruh alat kontrasepsi hormonal yang mengandung progesteron dan estrogen pada produksi ASI ibu menyusui adalah menghambat produksi dan volume ASI ibu menyusui. Walaupun demikian terdapat faktor lain yang dapat mempengaruhi produksi ASI yaitu : kekurangan asupan gizi ibu selama menyusui bayinya, berat lahir, ketenangan jiwa dan stress, konsumsi rokok, konsumsi alkohol, makanan ibu, dukungan suami dan keluarga lain, perawatan payudara, frekuensi hisapan bayi atau frekuensi penyusua
Review : Polimer dalam Kemasan Sediaan Steril
Bahan kemasan sediaan steril seperti infus sering digunakan bahan PVC (polivinil klorida), selain itu digunakan juga PP (Polypropylene). Poli(vinil klorida) (PVC) adalah bahan yang banyak digunakan untuk tabung infus intravena untuk pemberian obat dalam praktik klinis dan kantong darah untuk penyimpanan darah setelah pengambilan darah. Baru-baru ini, ditemukan bahwa penambahan lapisan dalam polietilen (PE) yang diekstrusi bersama dalam tabung infus PVC tampaknya mengurangi pelepasan plasticizer19, tetapi pengaruh bahan coextruded lainnya seperti poliuretan pada pelepasan plasticizer belum dipelajari. Kebanyakan tabung infus PVC mengandung di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) sebagai plasticizer untuk memberikan fleksibilitas tabung infus. Terdapat banyak laporan mengenai efek toksik DEHP yang dilepaskan dari tabung PVC selama infus intravena larutan obat berair. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bahan kemasan PVC dan PP pada sediaan steril melalui hasil-hasil penelitian terdahulu. Didapatkan 4 artikel yang dianalisa dengan proses sistematik review. Ditemukan bahwa kemasan berbahan PP dan kemasan non-PVC pada sediaan steril untuk infus lebih baik digunakan dibandingkan dengan penggunaan kemasan berbahan PVC yang memiliki kerugian karena disebabkan oleh tingginya tingkat adsorpsi insulin
