Can NIL help dissolve the gender inequities that are baked into the fabric of the NCAA culture?
Get PDFThe gender equity imbalance in college athletics has been an issue since the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was formed in 1905 (Boninger, 2018). On July 1, 2021, the NCAA put together a NIL policy that all athletes across all divisions can benefit from their brands (Jessop & Sabin, 2021). The impact that NIL will bring to compensation between male and female student-athletes can compare to the impact that Title IX brought to female sports participation rates in 1972 (Staurowsky & Rhoads, 2020). The reasons deal with social media and how female student-athletes use it. Female student-athletes tend to be more active on social media resulting in large engagement numbers and a greater following which is key for brand partnerships (Titus, 2021).
This presentation will: (1) discuss name, image, and likeness (NIL); (2) explain gender equity in college athletics; (3) show examples of NIL deals for female athletes

Effects of Serine Palmitoyltransferase inhibition by myriocin in lactating cows
No full textCeramides are a type of lipid that cause insulin resistance in non-ruminants. Dairy cows develop insulin resistance to support lactation, and ceramides are elevated during this time. Our objective was to determine the effects of ceramide synthesis inhibition on insulin resistance and milk production in cows. Ten Holstein dairy cows were ad libitum-fed for 2 d, followed by nutrient restriction (bedding straw, wheat bran, and minerals only) for 2 d. Concurrently, cows were intravenously infused with the serine palmitoyltransferase inhibitor, myriocin, (0.15 mg/kg BW/ d in 20% ethanol) or control (20% ethanol). In support of our hypothesis, myriocin lowered milk production compared to controls during nutrient restriction (P \u3c 0.05). However, we were unable to measure insulin sensitivity due to unanticipated negative health outcomes resulting from nutrient restriction. Our findings may be confounded by an unexpected drop in feed intake in myriocin cows during ad libitum-feeding (P \u3c 0.01).https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/posters/1040/thumbnail.jp
The Indian Mission of the Institute of Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) Nuns: Convents, Curriculum, and Indian Women
Get PDFThis study focuses on the Indian mission of IBVM nuns, and the role played by them in the spread of female education in India. While acknowledging that missionaries were part of the imperial process, this study analyzes the work of Catholic nuns in India, their convents, and curriculum to show how their work advanced women\u27s educational opportunities in India. In the process the study examines how Catholic nuns resisted the dominating attitude of the Catholic Church in India. The last section of the article examines how Christian influence under missionaries not only prepared good mothers and wives but also trained Indian women to defy tradition and become economically independent. By evaluating both the contributions and the limitations of the work of IBVM nuns this article shows the complex nature of their work under colonial rule, their confrontations with the Christian patriarchs andefforts to fight for the rights of colonized women
Looking at the Nation through a Lover\u27s Eye: N. Padmakumar\u27s Film, A Billion Colour Story
Get PDFCinematic response in India to social justice movements, even when aimed at rectifying communal violence and tensions, reifies entrenched orders separating Hindu from Muslim, citizen from the \u27Other,\u27 native from the diasporic. To the polyphony of films focused on interfaith love, a recent indie film adds a new \u27look\u27. Narasimhamurthy Padmakumar\u27s, A Billion Colour Story (2016) focalizes on a child\u27s point of view in a black and white filmic narration to dismantle old hatreds and re-ignite love of culture and nation for the very diversity that has become pixelated, walled, entombed and reactionary. More like Nollywood in its reliance on a smaller budget, a do-it-yourself chutzpah and decolonial vision, the story revolves around a child, Hari Aziz, who becomes the instrumental force behind rendering his parents\u27 dream true of making a film about their beloved nation, its teeming diversity, and its border-crossing love. The director, Padmakumar, addresses a host of current crises faced by those living in the shadow of Late Capital, culturally steeped patriarchies, and right-wing Hindu fundamentalism, while pointing to the billion colours that make up this teeming \u27democracy\u27 that might make its most significant issues clear in the binary of black and white. A close reading of this film reveals its decentering and decolonizing of hegemonic notions of nation, gender, class, and religion,-and of the hegemony of the Bollywood Gaze that dictates who will love whom, to what degree, at what costs, and to what end. What Narasimhamurthy Padmakumar provides in the diegesis, alongside the love story of a Muslim man and his Hindu wife, and the \u27product\u27 of their love, a child, is a film that encapsulates their \u27looking\u27 at the world. However, his looking leaves a lot to be desired on two registers: his looking does not see the active youth-led contestations taking place on the ground against the Hindu-led political hegemony and his looking refuses to call out the culprit, the excesses of violence performed by the nation- state and its Hindutva brigade against its minoritized \u27Muslim\u27 and othered subjects
High-Impact Learning Experiences and Post-Graduate Outcomes: Exploring the Influence on Employment, Continuing Education and Salary
Get PDFWith the cost of college on the rise, and students increasingly viewing college as a pathway to a successful career, colleges and universities are under increasing pressure to demonstrate evidence of their effectiveness. High-impact learning experiences, such as internships, study abroad, service-learning, capstones and undergraduate research, have emerged as a promising practice to enhance student development during college; however, few studies have examined the impact of such practices on post-graduate indicators of success. This paper adds to our understanding of the benefits of high-impact learning by examining their influence on student post-graduate employment, continuing education and starting salary. The data in this study includes all 8,746 undergraduates who graduated in May of 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 from a mid-sized public research university in the Northeast. Multilevel multivariate linear, logistic and multinomial regressions, clustered by college or school of study, are used to examine post-graduate placement rates, destinations and starting salaries. The findings indicate that high-impact learning experiences have a significant, positive effect on early post-graduate outcomes, even when accounting for factors such as GPA, field of study, race and Pell-grant eligibility. While GPA and field of study also had a strong influence of these outcomes, high-impact practices had a significant and meaningful effect on overall placement rates, employment, continuing education and starting salaries. These findings add to the evidence that high-impact learning experiences are an important contributor to student success and should be meaningfully integrated into the college experience
