Mental Health and Coping Mechanisms
In today\u27s society, mental health is severely stigmatized. Being a sociology major, I wanted to incorporate how we can tackle stigma and improve society for everyone\u27s benefit. For my COR class, I wanted to stress the importance of balance in our lives as busy college students. Analysis of Impact of COVID-19 on Nitrogen Dioxide and Sulfur Dioxide Concentrations Across the Northeastern United States, 2019-2021
The COVID-19 pandemic has been called a ‘natural experiment’ in which to analyze the relationship between anthropogenic activities and emissions from fossil fuels. Preliminary studies from NASA satellite monitoring show a decline in commuting for work and reduced electrical consumption are related to a decline in air pollution as evidenced by atmospheric measures of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). This study explores this relationship further by comparing rates of SO2 and NO2 using data from NASA’s Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and second Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA-2) Model, gathered from NASA’s GIOVANNI web GIS application. The data are collected at 0.25 by 0.25 degrees (OMI) and 0.5 by 0.625 degrees (MERRA-2) spatial resolution. Preliminary results indicate substantial differences in measures of both tropospheric column SO2 and NO2in the New York City metro area, along the I-95 corridor, and across the state of Pennsylvania.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/posters/1016/thumbnail.jp
Optimizing Community Efforts With GIS
Many smaller communities are limited by budgetary, personnel, and/or software constraints in their ability to deploy and collect spatial data specific to their community. Often such data are required to support other community initiatives and projects. The goal of this project is to provide a proof-of-concept for supporting a local community in gathering spatial data relevant to their needs. Specifically, as part of the Tree Planting Program in Cortland, NY, there is a need to survey and inventory previously planted trees. To make this process more efficient, we created a custom application with ArcGIS software that can collect and store spatial data relevant to tree plantings. In future surveys, this app could be used by volunteers or citizen scientists to reduce the cost of time-consuming data collection. Community-collected data is then reviewed by a professional arborist to verify tree species and finalize the inventory.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/posters/1018/thumbnail.jp
The Impact of Participation in an Outdoor Education Program on Physical Education Teacher Education Student Self-Efficacy to Teach Outdoor Education
Purpose: Self-efficacy, having been identified as a factor influencing teacher effectiveness (Dellinger, Bobbett, Olivier, & Ellett, 2008), combined with the increased prevalence of outdoor education (OE) content being taught within physical education contexts, warrants the need for Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) programs to address OE outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of the prior study was to determine if participation in an OE program increased self-efficacy to teach OE among PETE students, and the current study is longitudinal. Methods: Voluntary response sampling was used to acquire qualitative and quantitative data from the participant group, which consisted of 55 PETE students who had participated in a two-week OE course during the original study, and who again were evaluated using The Survey of Self-Efficacy for Teaching Outdoor Education . Results: Results indicated a significant increase in self-efficacy scores from pre- to post-test in all content areas (OE skills, Group Dynamic skills, Models and Theories) in the first study, and qualitative data in the longitudinal study indicates similar results. Conclusion: Participation in the program positively affected PETE students’ self-efficacy for teaching OE, which may improve their ability to ultimately teach this content in physical education settings.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/posters/1023/thumbnail.jp
Developing an adaptive rock climbing curriculum for SUNY Cortland Outdoor Pursuits 2021
SUNY Cortland Outdoor Pursuits opened in August of 2015 with the completion of the newly constructed Student Life Center. Outdoor Pursuits is a smaller department within the Recreational Sports Department. Outdoor Pursuits offers rock climbing services at its facility located in the Student Life Center. Currently, Outdoor Pursuits offers Bouldering and Top Roping services only when the Student Life Center is open, these hours are typically 3-10 pm. Monday-Friday and Saturday-Sunday 2-8 pm. These services are only provided to eligible SUNY Cortland faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other affiliated members. As the facility has grown in popularity during its operation, it has become apparent that there is a need for expanded programming. The need for additional programming is highlighted by the current lack of services for individuals with functional differences. To create a program that caters to the needs of individuals with functional differences, SUNY Cortland Outdoor pursuits would need to establish an adaptive climbing program. This adaptive program plan, in turn, required the development and administration of a needs assessment interview. The needs assessment provided the committee with valuable information needed for creating a program plan that adapted and enhanced the current mission, vision, values, and goals of SUNY Cortland Outdoor Pursuits and specifically the climbing wall. Based on the needs assessment interview results, a program plan has been created specific to Outdoor Pursuits and allows for a blueprint staff manual and training guide that SUNY Cortland Outdoor Pursuits can refer to in the future, should they choose to expand their programming to individuals with functional differences
