Feral and free: the queering of motherhood in Rachel Yoder’s Nightbitch

This thesis explores motherhood from a perspective that seeks to inform and challenge the patriarchal definitions of motherhood in order to simultaneously confront its restrictions and create new meanings from its institutionalized definition. The main text that this thesis analyzes is the 2021 novel Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder, as well as the 2024 film of the same name, critiquing how it successfully queers motherhood by questioning, challenging, and defying the impractical expectations placed upon mothers by society. Some secondary scholars whose works that I utilize to support my argument are authors such as Audre Lorde, Jessica Calarco, Adrienne Rich and Jack Hallberstam, along with many other feminist writers who examine the complexities of motherhood. Through extensive research, it is discovered how motherhood must be perceived as natural and biological so that women will feel destined to become mothers, rather than view motherhood as a choice. Since society needs mothers, society must control them, which they do through popular culture, literature, social media and politics. This results in mothers feeling like they are inadequate or “bad” due to their inability to live up to such demanding ideals. It is when they discover the inadequacy of these ideals that mothers become their most authentic selves. This is because mothers discover how powerful and strong they are in their capabilities and influences on the world

Tapestry of culture: the power of storytelling among Native American cultures: the search for history, culture, and identity

Storytelling is a centerpiece within cultures to remember the past, find faith, and establish comfort within a community setting. This thesis will explore how storytelling has become a means of entertainment and much more. This paper will focus specifically on how storytelling works for the inner workings of Elders in Native American communities, as well as how multifaceted storytelling can be understood in the importance of its culture and people. Further, we will see how these stories create moral lessons for communities and act as guidance for individuals. We will look at the way storytelling has evolved and changed with time, finding new ways of distribution. Followed by the idea of storytelling to find various identities and kinships, such as community and self-identity. In the end, a small essay will be dedicated to a self published creative novel focusing on self-identity and community while showing the inner workings of these stories and the moral lessons of Native stories in a fiction novel. In this thesis, I hope to provide convincing evidence on how storytelling is an essential part of native life and how it is an important marker and need in Native American culture. the importance of its culture and people

Changes in relative gene expression of Crassostrea virginica in response to microplastic pollution and increased temperatures.

Eastern oysters provide many ecosystem services including biofiltration of nutrients, production of suitable habitat, and barriers to shorelines all of which lead to oysters being considered ecosystem engineers and a keystone species. Environmental stressors such as global warming and plastic pollution are increasing concerns for the health of the eastern oyster, conveying the importance of understanding the specific ways in which these stressors willimpact this species. The objective of my thesis is therefore to determine how the genetic response of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) to microplastics changes when exposed to varying temperatures. In order to study the combined impacts of these stressors, juvenile oysters were exposed to plastic bottle leachate at an ambient temperature of 69 °F and to the sameleachate while undergoing a temperature ramp of ~9 °F over 11 days. The relative expression of 4 genes associated with biomineralization, immune function, and cellular stress were quantified. The combination of elevated temperatures and microplastic exposure has the potential to cause reduced biomineralization and growth, immune and inflammatory responses, and cellular stress. These deleterious effects can further degrade natural populations and the productivity of aquaculture populations, which could lead to serious long-term effects on the stability of the species. As our environment continues to change it will be imperative that we conserve the ecosystems that are necessary for not only humans to thrive, but for marine organisms to thrive as well. Having a holistic understanding of how foundational keystone species like the easternoyster will respond to changes is the first step to conserving these ecosystems

Breaking barriers: exploring the impact of social media on women\u27s behaviors, attitudes, and barriers in the free-weights room

The purpose of this study was to determine social media’s impact on women’s habits and attitudes on the weight-room area of a college recreation center. Using non-experimental quantitative methods, the frequency and type of weightroom use by women was measured, as well as the type and frequency of fitness-focused social media use

(2E, 6E)-farnesyl diphosphate synthase in isoprenoid biosynthesis pathway

    No full text
(2E, 6E)-farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FPPS) is an α-helical enzyme involved in the final step of mevalonate pathway (MVA) of isoprenoid biosynthesis. MVA is an essential pathway involved in the formation of various molecules such as cholesterol, dolichol, and CoQ10 which are fundamental molecules in eukaryotic cells. FPPS catalyzes the condensation reaction of dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) and isopentyl diphosphate (IPP) to form farnesyl diphosphate (FPP). In recent studies, FPP has been found to be an allosteric inhibitor of the enzyme FPPS, providing a potential application for cancer treatment. In this infographic, the reaction mechanism of DMAPP and IPP along with the enzyme’s structure and kinetic data are presented.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/collaborative_bioinfographics_project/1012/thumbnail.jp

Demographic characteristics and selected personality traits of women in competitive bodybuilding

This study investigated demographic characteristics and measures of personality (dimensions of performance perfectionism and five-factor model characteristics) in women in competitive bodybuilding between 18-25 years old. A total of 24 women completed an online survey which included a demographic questionnaire, the Five Factor Model Rating Form (FFMRF), and the Performance Perfectionism Scale for Sport (PPSS) inventories. Descriptive results for the FFMRF were Openness (18.17±3.12), Conscientiousness (25.58±3.33), Extraversion (19.96±3.46), Agreeableness (19.88±4.58), and Neuroticism (15.67±4.94), and for the PPS-S were Self-oriented performance perfectionism (20.96±3.53), Socially prescribed performance perfectionism (13.96±4.26), and Other-oriented performance perfectionism (10.54±4.23). Pearson’s correlation coefficients and Shapiro-Wilk tests revealed that there were no significant correlations between dimensions of Self-oriented performance perfectionism and the five-factor model personality traits. Socially prescribed performance perfectionism had a significant positive relationship with Neuroticism (r = 0.42, p = 0.04). Other-oriented performance perfectionism had a significant negative relationship with Agreeableness (r = -0.66, p ≤ 0.001) and Openness (r = -0.49, p = 0.03), but a significant positive relationship with Age of athlete (r = 0.49, p = 0.02). Therefore, it could be inferred that young-adult women in bodybuilding are highly conscientious, feel both strongly and critically about their athletic performances (self-oriented perfectionism), and evidence, in general, a positive psychological profile. Those who perceive elevated levels of socially prescribed performance perfectionism may also show av [sic] tendency towards emotional lability. As women in bodybuilding get older, their dimensions of performance perfectionism may shift from self-oriented to other-oriented and become less open to new experiences than their younger counterparts. The five-factor model personality traits offer valuable insight to coaches working with young-adult women in bodybuilding. Taking personality traits and characteristics into account can assist in developing an athlete’s protocol to best suit their tendencies and preferences, communicating critiques, selecting methods of encouragement or recognition, and better connecting with their athletes from a place of understanding. Dimensions of perfectionism can further assist coaches in understanding what motivates their clients, how athletes perceive their performances, or the performances of others within the sport when discussing strategy and protocol for both off-season and preparatory periods
