An investigation of resistance training behavior, non-specific psychological distress, and perceived barriers to resistance training in self-identifying female undergraduate students
The prevalence and severity of depression symptoms amongst college students, specifically female identifying undergraduate students, is worrisome. There is a great deal of research that suggests a relationship between exercise, specifically resistance training (RT), and mental health. That said, current literature suggests that many female identifying students are not engaging due to perceived barriers. This, perhaps because of the plethora of barriers one can perceive. The purpose of this study was multifold 1) to examine the prevalence and severity of non-specific psychological distress; 2) to determine if there were differences between Kessler 6 Non-Specific Psychological Distress Scale (K6) categories (i.e., no or low, moderate, and serious psychological distress) regarding RT program variables (i.e., frequency, intensity, and volume) and Perceived Barriers to Resistance Training (PBRTQ) total and subscale (i.e., time-effort, physical effects, social, and specific obstacles) scores; and 3) to establish a relationship between RT program variables and PBRTQ total and subscale scores in a sample of undergraduate self-identifying female students. Participants included a sample of self-identifying female undergraduate students who were enrolled at the State University of New York at Cortland during the 2022-2023 academic year. An extensive questionnaire was used to gather data that included the following: informed consent, demographic data, K6, and the PBRTQ. Results indicated that individuals in the severe psychological distress category perceived greater barriers to RT than individuals in the no and low (p \u3c 0.001) and moderate (p = 0.001) psychological distress categories. With that, a moderate negative correlation was found between perceived barriers to RT and RT frequency (r = -0.44, p \u3c 0.001). Therefore, it could be inferred that individuals experienced greater psychological distress due to their no or low RT frequency. For self-identifying female students to reap the benefits of RT, specifically the psychological benefits, universities must help students overcome their perceived barriers, specifically their perceived time/effort and social barriers
Standing Weight Perception across Unweighted Conditions in a Lower Body Positive Pressure Treadmill
Lower body positive pressure treadmills (LBPP-TM) provide assistive body weight support to the user by forcing air into an inflatable chamber in which the user is secured. The result of this positive pressure can be experienced as a lift to the user. The degree of chamber air pressure (CAP) determines the amount of supportive lift provided with greater and lesser CAP producing more and less lift, respectively. Exercise studies consistently report lower effort perceptions with greater CAP which suggest a reduced physiological and mechanical strain on the body. What is less well known is the effect on resting perceptions of standing weight (SWP). The purpose of this investigation was to examine the perception of resting standing weight across four different weighted conditions in a LBPP-TM. Nine participants (6 female; overall age: 21.3±1.9 years) stood in a LBPP-TM under the following order of body weight set (BWset) conditions: 100%BWset, 70%BWset, 35%BWset, 90%BWset. A portable Davis Vantage weather station barometer measured CAP inside the inflatable chamber and a 10-cm visual analogue scale measured SWP. Repeated measures analysis of variance evidenced significant changes across CAP (100%BWset: 767.5±4.9 mmHg; 70%BWset: 780.0±3.0 mmHg; 35%BWset: 793.5±3.0 mmHg; 90%BWset: 776.4±7.0 mmHg; all ps ≤ 0.001) except for the 70%BWset and 90%BWset conditions (p = 0.486) and within SWP (90%BWset: 8.8±1.4 cm vs. 70%BWset: 5.8±2.9 cm, p = 0.011; and 35%BWset: 4.6±3.2 cm, p = 0.007) experimental conditions. LBPP-TMs appear to provide robust manipulations of perception across different experimental contexts. Similar to findings from exercise studies, greater CAP and its resultant lift produced significant reduced perceptions of standing weight while at rest.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/slides/1025/thumbnail.jp
The effects of incorporating kinesthetic learning on learning outcomes and on-task behavior
This action research study used a mixed methods design to examine the effects of kinesthetic learning on student learning outcomes, and on task behavior in a sixth-grade social studies classroom. Data was collected during a three-week period. The treatment group was presented with kinesthetic lessons, purposeful movement, and brain breaks. The control group remained stationary during their lessons. Findings suggested an increase in both on-task behavior, and learning outcomes. In addition to examining learning outcomes and on task behavior, student\u27s perceptions were also considered through the students’ completion of weekly surveys. These surveys suggested that providing movement to students positively affected their perceptions of social studies class

A multidisciplinary collaboration between graphic design and physics classes responding to COVID-19
Students from graphic design and physics classes at SUNY Cortland collaborated during the spring semester of 2020 on a multidisciplinary project related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In these collaborations, the students’ individual contributions were part of a larger project that required a diverse skill set, through which students learned how different skills can complement their own disciplines. The graphic design and physics instructors applied a project-based learning philosophy applying the Common Problem Pedagogy (CPP) framework to construct student-teams composed of both disciplines. This project explored how coordinated social actions can allow the public to exercise control in uncertain times. Students created mathematical models related to the spread of the disease and the economic consequences of quarantine and then communicated the results in scientific reports, which were interpreted and presented as infographics and illustrative visual design posters for public outreach. To share the students’ work with the larger community the instructors concluded this project with a virtual public exhibition hosted by the SUNY Cortland Dowd Gallery
