Evaluation of Circadian Rhythm Regulation and the Impact of Light Sources and Screen Time in SUNY Cortland College Students

    No full text
The circadian clock, located within the hypothalamus, is an internal regulator that tells our bodies when to be alert/awake or relaxed/asleep. This clock operates in 24-hour cycles called the circadian rhythm , and maintains regulation based on environmental cues, including, most prominently, light intake. Further, the majority of work completed by college students is done online via light emitting devices. Over-exposure to light, especially during nighttime, can negatively affect circadian rhythm regulation and cause a plethora of adverse symptoms including cognitive impairment, mood changes, and sleep disorders. My proposed study aims to evaluate circadian rhythm regulation in SUNY Cortland college students, as well as investigate the roles that light intake and screen time play in this regulation. A sample of 101 SUNY Cortland students completed a researcher-derived survey, as well as the Sleep Quality Scale (Yi, Shin, & Shin, 2006). Results of the study will provide insight to the campus community regarding health and wellness of students.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/posters/1043/thumbnail.jp

    Kindred Quilt

    No full text
Kindred Quilt is a stop motion animation, based on a poem I had written about a conversation I imagined having with my brother, Braden, following his death. Braden and I fought and got on each others\u27 nerves, often, but at the end of the day, we loved each other unconditionally. With this animation, I let you in on my narrative quilt. I emphasize the attachment I have with my brother and the way our relationship has evolved after his death. I express the feeling of what it is like to be at a standstill with memories rushing past you.The mixed media aesthetic serves as a collection of symbolic objects, history, and pertinent memories of his short life. A family quilt not only celebrates family connections, it creates an artwork to be treasured and shared. In this case, my quilt is sewn in celebration of Braden and the memories of our relationship, then and now.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/slides/1028/thumbnail.jp

    Study of My Writing (2023-2024)

    Get PDF
In this study, the author begins by citing previous research by Donald Murray on the “logic of revision” in the writing process. Next, she selects three different pieces of writing as a sample and decides to collect data from each piece in order to compare the number of comments in feedback received by the instructor, number of paragraphs in each piece, and number of places where she revised. She focuses on each piece individually, creating a series of comparative graphs and interpretation to capture her revision process. Finally, the discussion section of this study identifies what the author would do to continue to study her own writing as well as priorities for teaching students about revision in her own future classroom.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/rhetdragonscriticaleval/1005/thumbnail.jp

    College Mental Health

    No full text
The topic I chose was “College Mental Health”. I chose this particular topic because hundreds of thousands of college students struggle everyday with their mental health and wellness. Whether this be depression, stress, anxiety, eating disorders or sleeping disorders, they all have a tremendous effect on our every day lives. In a study shown through bestcolleges.com, over three quarters (77%) of college students felt that they experienced moderate to severe psychological distress (Venable, 2022). Along with this, the National Library of Medicine talks about depression , and one cause that stood out was lifestyle habits. This includes not enough physical activity, sleeping habits, substance abuse, and nutritional habits.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1025/thumbnail.jp

    Getting Involved: Becoming a Leader

    No full text
Getting Involved: Becoming a Leader focuses on the importance of getting involved on SUNY Cortland campus, and how it can make one feel more integrated within the community. Being involved with other students is a great way to share your passion together and improve your psychological well-being as a whole. This presentation provides great resources for students to take the first step into getting involved on campus. As a senior at SUNY Cortland, I shared my experiences over the past four years in the presentation. Sharing my own personal experiences was a way that I was able to connect with first-year students to show them that I was once in their shoes.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1028/thumbnail.jp

    Leave Stress Behind

    No full text
The topic I chose to present was stress management. As students, there is no doubt that stressful times will come once course workloads and schedules start getting heavy. I have personal experiences with this in the past and want to help my students be educated on stress management concepts so that they can prevent stress as much as possible. The pressure of both games for athletes, maintaining a social life, distractions, etc. are everywhere and can prevent us from reaching our goals. Rather than trying to avoid them altogether, you can train your mind to handle them like a pro. That’s where mindfulness comes in. By practicing mindfulness, we can develop the ability to stay focused and centered, no matter what distractions come our way (Broadway, 2023). Mindful meditation is a practice that is proven to help reduce stress. Being mindful helps you to live in the present moment. This is important for both students and student athletes in order to perform their best in the classroom and in their sport. Meditation is a simple way to practice this. Mindfulness meditation could not be simpler: take a seat, pay attention to the breath, and when your attention wanders, return (Mindful Staff, 2023). Many students are unaware of how easily you can practice mindfulness meditation and how great of a coping method it is for stress. The goal is for my students is to learn the benefits of mindfulness, complete a meditation with me in class and continue to practice it for a week and notice results.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1036/thumbnail.jp

What Should I Be Doing with All This Free Time?

    No full text
In this Poster Symposium I detailed ways for students to get involved on campus, as many college students are not sure what to do with all their free time on campus during their first year. Through facilitating the students, I began to notice that many are so used to high school, where everything is on a clear-cut schedule, instead of college where there is more free time given to students.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1008/thumbnail.jp

How to Park - All Things Park Center

    No full text
The topic I chose to teach was How to Park. It is a lesson about all things Park Center, with a little play on words. I chose to teach my students how to get around, and the importance of Park Center because it is their main building. The bulk of a physical education major\u27s classes are in Park Center, and all of their advisors are located there as well. It is important for them to get to know the building well in order for them to adapt and feel comfortable with their new lives here at Cortland! Visiting and getting to know a new building will help to remove anxiety about not knowing where anything is which can be a big stressor especially for first-year students.
