    I chose the topic of overall health and wellness because I believe it is very important for first year college students to be taking care of themselves mentally, emotionally, and physically. Being away from home for the first time is very exciting but can also be very scary. While some young adults may have been caring for themselves for a long time, many have not and they have relied on their parents for help with things like financial stability, being fed 3 meals a day, having a roof put over their head etc. As an only child coming to college and moving away for the first time, I had no idea what to expect, so I am hoping my topic has helped guide students so far in their time here at Cortland. I decided to cover this topic in order to educate my students on the importance of recognizing your mental emotional and physical struggles, as well as being able to effectively and safely navigate through them. While this is a stressful time, being sure to expose freshmen to the great strengths of Cortland including the Student Life Center, the wonderful academic departments and academic resources, can make their stress levels decrease. It may be hard for them to reach out to someone and ask for help or first year students may not know where to find a building or department, so I made sure to highlight topics like those in my presentation.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1043/thumbnail.jp

    Temporal Dynamics of Invasive Jumping Worms

    Originating in southeast Asia, jumping worms have been introduced to all continents except Antarctica. Jumping worms are surface-dwelling organisms that change topsoil structure through active feeding, thrashing moving through the soil, and excreting soil aggregates that form a long-lasting granular soil structure. Their documented impacts include reduction of soil organic matter, selection for bacterial growth and loss of native soil fauna, including millipedes and salamanders. Jumping worms are an annual species: they emerge in early spring and mature into adults during the summer when they reach peak abundance. Adults lay cocoons that persist in the soil throughout the winter and die after the first fall frost. The purpose of this study is to document growth rate and abundance of co-occurring species of jumping worms throughout their life cycle. Earthworms were sampled weekly at six forested sites throughout Taughannock State Park, New York from April to November 2022. Individuals increased in length over time as they progressed from juveniles in late April to the first adults seen on July 23, 2023. Juvenile worm length and abundance were positively correlated with cumulative growing degree days while adult length and abundance remained constant with no significant correlation. Abundance of the three species varied spatially and temporally. Understanding the temporal dynamics of these species and how they vary across latitudes and habitats is essential to predict their spread and potential impacts

    Treated like Aliens: An analysis of Refugee Admissions into the United States by Preferences

    From the Refugee Act of 1980 to the present, the President has had the power to create a refugee ceiling, capping the admittance of refugees into the United States. The differential impact that Republican control of the legislative and/or the executive branches has on the admission of refugees into the United States is explored in this paper. Focusing on the refugee system, I examine Presidential political parties along with those of the House of Representatives over the course of 1986 to 2019 to determine if there is a correlation between party ideologies and refugee admission caps. Analyzing data from the United States House of Representatives, the Department of Homeland Security Immigration reports, the Office of Refugee Resettlement, and the Migration Policy Institute from the years 1986 to 2019, allows multivariate regression analysis of sex, region of origin, and political party of political elites to be examined to see if these factors play a significant role in the refugee admission process. My research shows that individualized factors play a role, along with political party and the region of origin play significant roles in determining refugee admittance. Most of the literature regarding refugees is embedded in immigration research. Refugee literature suffers from the challenges of disaggregating the data from standard immigration statistics and is limited in scope due to the nature of the topic. Data is pulled from immigration research in addition to what data does exist for refugee admission in the United States. Miller, Holmes, and Keith (2020) argue that presidential preferences affect refugee admissions and contribute to their findings by examining individual factors of those admitted, rather than the more politicized factors.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/programs/1010/thumbnail.jp

    An Artist on a Soldier\u27s Journey: The Victor Butler Project

    Acknowledging the histories of the local community is an important and underappreciated role of historians. Sometimes, these histories can lead to unexpected tales of adventure, and a former member of the Cortland community has a story worth sharing. Victor Butler, a Cortland resident, was a member of an Army Band, known as the Up-Beats, during World War Two. This poster will discuss the journey of the band, from New York, to the European Theatre, and back to the United States where members of the band went on to play local Central New York Jazz Clubs. In addition, the team of student historians will share their process for tracking the band and forming a chronology, as well as their future plans to produce internet resources telling Victor’s story.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cortlandonly/1022/thumbnail.jp

    Geosimulation of Land Cover Change in Ontario County, NY using Python Scripting

    Are there any substantial areas of urban or exurban development in upstate New York? Ontario County in the Finger Lakes region is one such place in upstate due to influx of residents from Rochester, suburban Monroe County, and northeastern states to Canandaigua Lake. This study examines hotspots of residential property values for 2021 and forecasts future development for the region. ArcMap was used to map residential property values from the Ontario County Land Parcel database to determine areas of growth. In addition, Land Use Land Cover data from the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) was used to determine rate of land conversion to developed over snapshot years of 2001, 2008, 2016, and 2019. Finally, Python scripts created using ArcPy for ArcGIS were used to simulate growth. Comparison of the geosimulation model forecast for 2018 with the actual development for year 2019 indicates the model generally was reliable in rate of growth.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/posters/1046/thumbnail.jp

    Memory Acquisition by Brainless Juvenile Terrestrial Planarians (Bipalium kewense)

    Learning is how organisms build and store memories in their brains to aid them in survival. This process occurs as organisms experience new stimuli. Bipalium kewense, a terrestrial planarian, has a very minimal central nervous system. The nervous system of planarians consists of only two nerve cords and two ganglion which serve as a “brain.” This species reproduces by segmenting a small piece of their posterior end as a fragment, which initially lacks most adult structures. The fragments must regenerate the head, brain, mouth, functioning digestive system, and reproductive organs. To determine where memory is stored in these terrestrial planarians, we are testing whether they can learn without a brain as fragments and retain this memory throughout adulthood. In our experiment, we will be investigating memory acquisition in headless juvenile Bipalium kewense by raising fragments on two different textured surfaces. Once the fragmented planaria begin to develop a head, one group will be placed on the treatment surface and be exposed to a negative stimulus. The planaria will be trained to avoid this surface and memory will be measured in adulthood to determine if they can distinguish between these two environments.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/slides/1029/thumbnail.jp
