Examining evolutionary pressures on flavonoid biosynthetic pathway genes in Nicotiana species with different flower colors

    No full text
The evolution of angiosperms has relied on pollinators to facilitate speciation. Various pollinators are attracted to distinct flower colors produced by different combinations of pigments. The flavonoid biosynthetic pathway (FBP) works in a branched pattern to produce flavonol and anthocyanin pigments, including pelargonidin (red), cyanidin (magenta), and delphinidin (purple). The objective of this study is to evaluate evolutionary pressures acting on FBP genes affecting flower color shifts in Nicotiana species. We aligned DNA sequences, inferred phylogenies, then ran both branch model and branch-site model analyses to identify the ratio of the rates of nonsynonymous to synonymous mutations (dN/dS). In branch models, some genes are under more relaxed purifying selection in species that do not produce anthocyanins, suggesting that there is less pressure to maintain these sequences. In branch-site models, some genes had some amino acid sites under positive selection, suggesting that those sites may be important in producing different pigments

The effects of implementing movement breaks in elementary classrooms

    Get PDF
This action research project investigated the implementation of movement breaks in a third-grade classroom to enhance academic performance and behavior. The short study aimed to assess whether integrating regular movement breaks into the classroom routine would lead to significant improvements in academic outcomes and behavior, particularly those students diagnosed with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Over a designated period, movement breaks were introduced at a specific interval during the school day. Data was collected through observations, surveys, and behavior tracking. Surprisingly, the findings revealed that despite the incorporation of movement breaks, there was no significant difference observed in overall academics or behavior among the students. This suggests that while movement breaks may have other benefits, such as promoting physical activity and engagement, their direct impact on academic engagement and behavior in this context may be limited. Further research is warranted to explore alternative strategies for leveraging movement breaks effectively in educational settings such as integration of movement into instructional time

Chat is this real? Perceived authenticity of #naturecore via TikTok comments

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to understand how people perceive the authenticity of nature-based TikTok content by analyzing the comments left on videos that featured the hashtag #naturecore. Comments posted on relevant videos were observed using qualitative content analysis to evaluate how people use comments to express perceptions of authenticity. Prior literature on the perceived authenticity of mass-oriented computer mediated communication was used to inform decisions made during data analysis. Of the 138,389 comments collected as data, 1,031 were identified as relevant for this scope of this study. The final sample was analyzed using constant comparison to establish codes and themes. Using thematic analysis, it was concluded that TikTok users who commented on aspects of perceived authenticity did so in three ways: 1. discussing whether content was real or fake; 2. making judgements of the content with criticisms or questions; and 3. comparing the #naturecore content to other things. This study could provide insight into how TikTok is used to portray nature, as well as how other people view nature-based social media content. Additionally, this thesis highlights some of the obstacles surrounding the use of TikTok as a source of data in academic research and provide some potential solutions for future researchers

Beyond the First Semester - Goal Setting and Building Relationships

    No full text
The topic I chose to teach my lesson on was “Beyond the First Semester”. This lesson mainly focused on how students can begin to professionally develop themselves in order to succeed in Sport Management. I created this lesson to inform students of things I wish I knew as a freshmen that could have better set me up for the next 3 years in the SUNY Cortland Sport Management program. Discussing goal setting and how to build relationships/network will help students set a strong foundation to succeed for the future. A study done by Dr. Abram Anders is the Jonathan Wickert Professor of Innovation and Associate Director of the Student Innovation Center at Iowa State University found that social networking has only increased in importance for professional success (Anders, 2018). More so, it has been estimated that 60–90% of all professional jobs are obtained through networking (Anders, 2018). With that said, exploring both informal and formal networking techniques increases the likelihood that students will land job/internship opportunities in the future. Furthermore, there is a correlation between student employment success with goal setting and networking. University interventions to enhance student employability are most likely to be seen as effective by students when they target skill development and when they provide opportunities for networking (Clements & Kamau, 2018). Thus, when students set goals for themselves they are creating a structure to further progress toward their career aspirations while simultaneously making valuable connections.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1075/thumbnail.jp

Transitioning to College Life: Getting Involved at SUNY Cortland

    No full text
I chose to do my first lesson about getting involved in college. My goals were to talk about some of the ways you can get involved at Cortland and how doing so will benefit you. I focused a lot on where to find resources and information about clubs on campus along with how being involved makes the transition to college easier. Looking back, many of my students agreed that joining an extracurricular allowed them to make friends more easily and feel comfortable at Cortland.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1076/thumbnail.jp

Stress Management: A Road to Bettering Your Health

    No full text
The topic I chose to teach was Stress Management. My presentation was based on managing stress because it is a natural thing that almost everyone experiences due to school, family, or any other factor. Research was done on ways that students cope with stress and how to manage a healthier lifestyle. A quote from an article that I found interesting was, Steiner said these students performed, on average, four points higher on their final exams than those who did not sleep at least eight hours per night. Many first-year students develop a pattern of putting their problems on the back burner and letting nature take its course. This isn\u27t how students should live their lives because it\u27s not healthy to have such a large buildup. At the moment, not putting immediate tension on smaller problems may seem fine, but eventually, they will all catch up to you and ultimately cause more stress than it would have in the first place. The goal of my lesson was to deter students from putting too much stress on themselves and teach them that doing things that make you happy and laugh is just as important as getting an A on an exam.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1091/thumbnail.jp
