The effects of cellular dynamics on flower size throughout development in Nicotiana section Repandae polyploids
No full textPollination is dependent on flower tube size, for example, pollinators must have a longer tongue to reach nectar in a longer tube. Flower size is dependent on cellular dynamics, the way that cells elongate and divide. Cellular dynamics within the flower tube are measured by observing cell length, width, and number across development. Another factor that may impact cell size, ultimately influencing flower tube size, is polyploidy. Polyploids have duplicated genomes and tend to have larger cells than related diploids. In this study, we use Nicotiana section Repandae polyploids (~4 million years old) and their diploid progenitors to understand the impacts of polyploidy on flower size. We stain flowers across development with acid fuchsin and measure cell length, width, and number. With these measurements, we will investigate the role that polyploidy played in the evolution of the flower size differences observed in Nicotiana section Repandae polyploids and their diploid progenitors.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cortlandonly/1025/thumbnail.jp
The Relationships Between Parental and Youth Physical Activity Behaviors and Perceptions
Get PDFPhysical activity is defined as any bodily movement by skeletal muscles resulting in energy expenditure. Physical activity has multiple different intensity levels, such as light, moderate, and vigorous. It is extremely important for both physical and mental health. The goals of this study are to examine the relationship between parental physical activity (i.e., leisure-time physical activity [moderate-vigorous physical activity]), youth health (i.e., body mass index [BMI], physical activity (moderate-vigorous physical activity), and perception of parental encouragement towards physical activity in a sample of parent-youth (8-14 years old) dyads. Participants will be sent a link via email that will have the validated questionnaires they will be asked to complete. Parts of the survey are questions designed for the youth to answer, whereas other parts are designed for the parent/guardian to answer
Analysis of Toyota and the Automobile Industry
Get PDFToyota is an automobile company that has dominated the market for many recent years. The cars that we have today are a lot different than the ones we had two hundred years ago. Innovations in car technology were possible by entrepreneur’s who wanted to make a difference in the world. Now, there are so many different options of cars to buy. This paper will outline the three main different types of fuel sources for cars, the pros and cons of each, and determine which consumers want the most. It will then go into what Toyota and its competitors have done, knowing this information. Then an analysis of Toyota’s internal and external strengths will be conducted with a linear regression analysis and other analytical techniques. The mission, goals, organizational structure of Toyota will be highlighted and suggestions for improvements and aspirations will be made. The goal of this paper is to provide Toyota an analysis of their company structure, market industry, products, their consumer’s preferences and competitors market share so that they are inspired to create the next innovative breakthrough for technology in cars making them more environmentally friendly, cost effective, and accessible to all
Implementing music to increase elementary student focus
Get PDFThis action research project used a mixed methods design to address the effect of different types of music on student focus while performing an independent task. Despite its success with memorization, does music work equally as well on student focus? Data was collected over a period of three weeks for 30 minutes each morning for 5 days each week. The music played while students completed the task changed each week. This included lyrical songs during week one, classical music during week two, and instrumental versions of songs students knew the lyrics to during week three. Four behavior markers were observed as indications of students having difficulty focusing on the independent task. Initial findings suggest that classical music had the greatest positive impact on student focus with engagement in behavioral markers averaging at the lowest rate per day. Meanwhile, songs with lyrics, like in week one, proved to be the most distracting. Instrumental versions of songs they knew the lyrics to were more distracting than classical music however, fell within the acceptable range of focus ability. This potentially could be due to how close instrumental versions of popular songs mimic classical music. This project does also discuss other factors that may influence student focus and how music can address those factors as well to improve student focus while completing an independent task

Young kept the majority of her essays from her time here at Cortland; all of them ranged from about 2-3 pages in length, and included a very rigid outline that was directly correlated to the content of her essays. Goal Setting and Time Management Skill Development
No full textThe topic that I chose to teach was “Goal Setting and Time Management.” I felt that one of the most challenging points in transitioning from high school to college was managing time and effectively using my time. One of the ways to manage your usage of time is to set goals. Setting attainable goals is important for students. Discussing SMART goals was crucial for encouraging the development of attainable goals. SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (Purdue Global, 2024). Goal setting also helps students prioritize better, clears directions, and stay motivated (Osamwonyi, 2023). High school is more structured in comparison to college and with being more self-centered, it requires students to develop a skill set to enhance time management. Goal setting helps with developing time management because of the SMART goals previously mentioned. One study found that giving students support in developing goal setting and time management skills at the undergraduate level was beneficial to their academics and personal well-being (Kalun et al. 2024). Freshman Survival Guide: Online Tools and Scheduling Made Easy
No full textMy lesson was based on the online demands and tech needs of college. The adjustment between high school and college is a very difficult time and based on my freshman year experience and the feedback from my COR class the breakdown of the school website and online academic resources was an important step when it came to the overall success of the students. According to David Earnest, Students face potential difficulties that result in dropping out/ failing out, the departure rate is caused largely by academic and social stressors encountered by students as they attempt to adapt to the college environment (Earnest, 2010). Helping students understand and limit the stress of not knowing how to schedule appointments, send emails, and submit assignments is one of the many steps I can take to help ensure that their goals are being met with as little amount of stress as possible. Many different variables determine the success of students but understanding how to get help through school webpages and online websites can help limit the amount of stress these students face. Friedlander states that academic demands increase and new social relations are established and students are often uncertain of their abilities to meet these demands (Friedlander, 2007). Teaching these students how to navigate their new college\u27s websites and online resources is essential for fostering their independence and academic success. Familiarity with these tools empowers students to access vital information, engage with campus services, and make the most of their educational experience.
