The impact of play-based learning on early childhood development

    Get PDF
This action research project emphasizes the recognized influence of play on children’s social, emotional, and cognitive growth. The researcher explored how play-based learning strategies contribute to students’ development, drawing insights from existing literature. The research used mixed methods to analyze the impact of play-based learning on social, emotional, and cognitive development in a sixth-grade classroom. The researcher collected data over six weeks. Initial findings showed the effect of play-based learning on students\u27 development. The baseline data in this action research project showed that this group of students enjoys playing inside, outside, independently, or in a group. The researcher found that these students crave that time for creativity and fun in their daily schedules. Students had a difficult time regaining focus following free play and no play. However, the researcher observed that students engaged in free play were more inclined to invite others to play with them. The researcher observed that students were more willing to work with people outside their friend groups in the third week of this intervention. Research shows that when students are engaged in meaningful, play-based activities, they are more open to all kinds of learning. This action research project provides information on the many benefits of play-based learning on students’ cognitive, social, and emotional development

    Artificial Authors (2024-2025)

In this piece Shreya Dhital frames her discussion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with emphasis on the definition of the word artificial. In giving this definition, she argues for the need to keep in mind that while AI might be intelligent it is also contrived, human-derived, and lacking in spontaneity. She further develops this argument through the use of fiction, including a short story, “The Shawl,” to show how human-written work draws on a depth of real-life experiences, unexpected human emotions, and ultimately is what gives AI its training in “learning” how to write. She implores the reader not to “waste the privilege of being human” through overreliance on generative AI.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/rhetdragonsargument/1005/thumbnail.jp

A Film About Tragedy Remix Letter to the Editor (2024-2025)

In this example of a remix letter to the editor, we decided to include a pairing of both the remix and the original research inquiry (published here after the remix.) In her remix, Rhiannon O’Boyle takes a research inquiry about the role of historical fiction, the love story of Jack and Rose, and the true events of the sinking of the Titanic in James Cameron’s 1997 film, Titanic, and remixes them into the genre of a letter to the editor. In her remix letter to the editor, she expresses an opinion about the necessity of the love story.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/rhetdragonsremix/1004/thumbnail.jp

    Editorial: Defying Heteropatriarchal Currents

The strong cultural and political systems that constrain women\u27s autonomy and progress, often rooted in colonial and imperial histories, have shown troubling resilience despite over a century of diverse women\u27s global activism to dismantle them. In the face of these multifaceted attacks on the rights and self-determination of women and LGBTQIA individuals, particularly in the Global South and within marginalized communities globally, it is not the time to retreat into familiar frameworks. Instead, we must resist by taking strong intellectual positions that center postcolonial feminist frameworks, recognizing the diverse and often interconnected forms of oppression women face

The Purpose of SUNY Cortland and Higher Education

    No full text
For my poster, I explained the topic, The Purpose of SUNY Cortland and Higher Education. This topic was used to explain the overall meaning of Higher Education at a college level. The first goal that is outlined in my poster is that students were asked to reflect on their own justifications for attending college. The other goal outlined in this poster is that students were able to demonstrate two different justifications that other students have for going to college. In this poster, I explained how these goals were achieved with different methods of learning. I also reference three different sources to emphasize the overall meaning of higher education. The first was a website explaining higher education. The second website had a survey including different justifications for why students are going to college. The last journal includes the emotional impact of first year students with transitioning to college. In the outcomes section of the poster, I expained what students learned from my presentation.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1057/thumbnail.jp

    Notetaking in College

    No full text
The topic I chose to teach was “Notetaking in College”. Coming to college is hard, especially with the overwhelming workload. Taking notes in college and high school is completely different. Students need to understand a proper, efficient, and organized way to take notes in order to benefit from them. An article by E-student mentions, “Note-taking seems simple but doing it systematically and methodically is essential for academic work, personal growth, professional development, and lifelong learning.” (Holt, 2023). It includes so many benefits like enhancing memory, promoting active listening, improving comprehension, organizing thoughts, facilitating effective review, and so much more. (Holt, 2023) There are many different methods of notetaking and students must find which one works best for them to be successful. The Cornell method, Mapping method, and Outlining method are three examples of effective notetaking strategies. Each method has its own perks; students have to find their best fit to make studying and learning easier and effective for them. (EvolveMe, 2024) Overall, good notetaking is fundamental to success in college. There are many ways for students to maximize their learning and studying abilities with different methods. The goal of my lesson was to expose students to the importance of notetaking in college and introduce them to new or similar notetaking methods to use in their academic careers.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1082/thumbnail.jp
