Identifying TTX Producing Bacteria in Bipalium kewense and Bipalium adventitium

    No full text
Terrestrial planarians such as Bipalium kewense and B. adventitium contain a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin (TTX). TTX inhibits voltage-gated sodium channels, which blocks neurotransmission and paralyzes the muscles. Flatworms may use the toxin to stun their prey. Bacteria in the microbiome of organisms which contain TTX are believed to be the actual toxin source in marine animals. The microbiomes of terrestrial planarians remain unstudied, so it is unknown what bacteria are making TTX for them, or if bacteria are making the neurotoxin at all. In order to explore the culturable microbiomes of Bipalium flatworms, sampling of culturable bacteria is necessary because nothing is known about the genes that encode TTX production. Once isolated from worms, 16S sequencing will be used to identify the bacterial species and a competitive ELISA will be used to detect TTX production by these bacteria. My hypothesis is that the resident bacteria found in these planaria are producing TTX.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cortlandonlyslides/1001/thumbnail.jp

The effects of student choice on motivation and writing skills

This mixed methods action research study investigates the potential effects of student choice on motivation and academic performance in writing-based assignments in a fourth-grade classroom. Baseline data was collected prior to implementation of student choice writing activities and then used to compare writing samples collected post intervention. The baseline data suggests that students’ attitudes towards autonomy are positive. Having choices was important to them and helped them learn better. However, data also indicates that while students were motivated to write using choice, many of the reading and writing competency scores dropped during journal entry writing samples. Data shows that while students were able to increase the “elaborate on ideas” column on the grading rubric for student choice writing samples, the spelling, mechanics, and structure scores often fell at or below their previous grades for teacher assigned writing samples. This suggests that students may need additional writing strategies and/or interventions when given choice in assignments

Move, Laugh, Connect: The Power of Recreational Activities in Students Lives

    No full text
Recreational activities are extremely important for getting involved on campus and for your mental health. Not only do recreational activities improve mental health, but they also improve brain functioning, teamwork skills, socialization, stress management, and physical health. At Cortland, we offer many different types of ways to get involved on campus. The Student Life Center is one of those opportunities at Cortland that offers many amenities to get active, play games, or take classes and interact with friends. Cortland also offers a very competitive and fun intramural sports league in many different sports. Along with intramural sports, there are many club sports teams. We also offer nearly 70 student-governed clubs. All of these opportunities are great ways for students to get involved and be active on campus.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1063/thumbnail.jp

Cultivating Civic Leaders: The Intersection of Community Engagement and Ecotourism

    No full text
The Role of Civic Engagement in Developing Effective Educators and Community Leaders. This presentation focuses on the importance of civic engagement and community for future roles as educators, planners, and leaders for two main reasons. First, I see this as crucial for students studying to work with populations that may feel disengaged or lack motivation. Second, I wanted students to understand how experiences abroad can deepen their connection to local communities, transforming their future educational practices. The TED Talk 3,000-Year-Old Solutions to Modern Day Problems served as the foundation of my presentation, demonstrating how ancient societies practiced community-centered living and the relevance of these approaches to today’s civic challenges. (Shah, 2019). Through this talk, students were prompted to think about what ancient practices they might carry forward into their own careers and lives in general. Furthermore, my presentation connects these practices with the transformative potential of study abroad experiences, using an ecotourism trip to Hawaii as a case study. This immersive experience highlights how civic engagement abroad cultivates a deeper understanding of regenerative practices and environmental stewardship, which can then be integrated into educational contexts at home. Research shows that ecotourism, “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education,” can inspire transformative change, encouraging travelers to bring community-minded, sustainable practices back home. (TIES, 2015). The worksheet I provided facilitated personal reflection, asking students to identify accomplishments, consider their leadership qualities, and address the role they can play in change. The purpose of this topic was to build an understanding of civic engagement that not only enriches community but also instills empathy, responsibility, and purpose for students who will work with diverse populations in the future.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1079/thumbnail.jp
