Notetaking for Success: How to Make Your Notes For You

    No full text
I chose to teach on the topic of note taking in college. This topic was important and for me, personally meaningful because they reflect challenges I faced during my freshman year in college. When I came to college, I thought the way I took notes and the study techniques I used in high school will be just as useful in college as they were in high school. After all, I was a very good student in high school so why wouldn\u27t they work. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I quickly learned that I needed to completely change my approach to how I take notes and how I study in order to succeed in college. I wasn\u27t used to taking notes on fast paced lectures, didn\u27t know what was important to actually takes notes on and how to use my notes to properly study. My ADHD was no help in this manner and made things very difficult because I was someone that needed a routine even when it comes to note taking and studying. This was a very overwhelming change because I didn’t know where to start so through my lesson, I hope to help my students who might be going through the same struggles in this area and making the transition a little easier.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1155/thumbnail.jp

    SST and Study Abroad

    No full text
The topic I chose was SST and Study Abroad because of the importance and impact studying abroad can have on their studies and career. International travel is important for students studying to be social studies teachers because it can enhance their curriculum and is a model for global citizenship (SUNY). As well as this, it allows them to navigate an understanding for different cultures and how to work with diverse groups (Why Study Abroad). For college students to gain firsthand experience with other cultures by visiting historical and geographical sites, as teachers they can gain a knowledge that moves instruction beyond the textbook and foster a greater sense of cultural awareness in their own future classrooms. Many of the students in my class were unaware of all the options and importance for studying abroad, so sharing my experience and the programs available for them helped them gain motivation to study abroad and be prepared for what to expect. The goal of my lesson was to share the importance of studying abroad, especially as students in the SST program and for them to be able to navigate how to find a program that best fits them.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1158/thumbnail.jp

Speak Up, Take Charge, Lead On!

I went in with an end goal, asking myself, “How can I best affect my students in ways they can integrate into their tool kit? From this I worked backwards, putting myself in the shoes of my students. Between a collection of progressive self conversation and utilization of my strengths, I compiled a lesson plan targeting the importance of communication and its strong connection with leadership. Discussing communications\u27 role in leadership, our students participated in a blind drawing challenge in an energetic atmosphere where communication felt natural. Through this group challenge, students were invited to collaborate with each other to beat other teams. My interactive lesson was designed and executed to exhibit self and social awareness, creating a building block for their future.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1159/thumbnail.jp

The Effects of Invasive Jumping Worms on Native Vegetation’s Performance

    No full text
Invasive jumping worms significantly alter soil structure and chemical composition, thereby negatively affecting soil biota and plant performance. Mechanisms by which worms influence plants are not well understood but are likely related to disruption of mycorrhizal associations, and changes in water and nutrient availability. This study examines the ecological effects of invasive jumping worms on mycorrhizal associations and nutrient uptake in four native plant species within the Catskills Mountains. Our research focuses on red oak, bottle brush grass, zig-zag goldenrod, and lady fern transplanted across seven sites with varying worm populations in 2019. In the lab, we dissected, dried, and processed plant samples for nutrient analysis. We predict that the invasive jumping worms will affect each species differently, and have negative impacts on AMF associations as well as the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus, found in the leaves. These findings will guide land management strategies and conservation efforts going forward as these worms continue to spread.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cortlandonly/1024/thumbnail.jp

Response of stress related genes in Eastern Oysters exposed to plastic leachate

Millions of tons of plastic end up in the oceans, causing many different hazards to marine organisms. I studied how eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) respond to plastic exposure by measuring differential expression of stress related genes in plastic-polluted water compared to control conditions. Ten juvenile oysters were kept in each of ten beakers. Five beakers contained clean saltwater at 17ppt. Five beakers contained plastic leachate made from the breakdown of plastic pieces in 17 ppt saltwater. After 2 weeks of exposure, treatment oysters were moved to clean 17ppt water for an additional two weeks of recovery time. Gill tissue was removed from two oysters per beaker weekly for 4 weeks. I used complementary DNA synthesized from extracted RNA to measure relative expression of genes involved in stress responses via quantitative PCR. I found that exposure to microplastics and plastic leachate caused differential expression in the stress-related genes of eastern oysters.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cortlandonlyslides/1000/thumbnail.jp

Key benefits of small group instruction for diverse learners

Utilizing a mixed method approach this research study investigated the effects of small group instruction on the learning of diverse learners. Informed by a preliminary literature review that supports the use of small-group instruction, the researcher conducted a small-scale action research project to focus on three diverse learners in a 1st-grade classroom over four weeks. One of the findings of this project shows that small group instruction helps promote social and emotional skills as students feel more comfortable interacting with peers in a small group rather than in a whole group. Another finding indicates that students feel more encouraged by the instructor and their peers in a small group setting to try problem-solving math problems. The study concludes that small-group instruction facilitates learning for diverse learners, who benefit from learning from peers and trying challenging math tasks. The research presentation provides insight to teachers on how to select for small groups, implement interventions and utilize small groups to build strong social interactions

Time Is on Your Side: How to Handle Time Management in College

    No full text
This lesson was about time management and the importance of it especially for incoming freshman. Moving out of the house and living on your own on top of balancing schoolwork and extra curriculars can be difficult. I wanted to bring this topic to light so students can be less stressed for the remainder of their college years. I provided them with an activity to help them use time management skills I taught and prepare for upcoming situations.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1068/thumbnail.jp

    Personal Branding

The presentation, Building Your Personal Brand, helps first-year students learn how to create a strong professional image and make valuable career connections. It focuses on using LinkedIn, a key tool for finding jobs and building a network. The topics I discussed include creating a good profile, writing a clear resume and maintaining professionalism online and in person. The presentation highlights how LinkedIn helps students stand out to recruiters and shows why networking is important for building a career. By giving simple, practical tips, it aims to prepare students for success in their future careers, starting from their first year of college.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1066/thumbnail.jp

    Your Time, Your Success

Explores time management and practical strategies to help students make the most of their time, reduce stress, and boost productivity. The concept of time management, defined as effectively using available time, is crucial for success both in academics and future careers. (Cambridge University Press) Key strategies include setting clear goals, breaking down large tasks into manageable steps, and prioritizing based on deadlines and importance. Introduces the importance of creating a study schedule, encouraging tools like digital calendars, and emphasizes the flexibility needed to adapt to unexpected challenges. Techniques such as active study methods, eliminating distractions, and the Pomodoro Technique for structured study and break cycles are recommended to enhance focus (Cornell University, Learning Strategies Center). Finally, the session underscores the role of self-care, including regular breaks, exercise, and sleep, in maintaining mental and physical well-being (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association). With these strategies, students can achieve balance, increase productivity, and approach their academic and personal goals with confidence and control.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1089/thumbnail.jp
