Add Additional Graduate Seminars to MS Program in Environmental Science and Biology

    No full text
Proposal to add three one-credit graduate seminars to MS requirements, with no change in total credits required. This would create a series of four required one-credit seminars (ENV 705, 706, 707, and 708), replacing the two terms of ENV 705 currently required. Graduate students also would be required to take at least one of three graduate-level statistics courses

The Villa and Agricultural Economy of Late Roman Sicily: An Archaeobotanical Perspective

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to highlight the important role recovered plant materials can play in helping to create a broader understanding of Sicilian villas as centers for production during the Late Roman period (400-476 CE). The heart of the investigation requires a multivariate approach that compares findings from Gerace with aspects of written and archaeological record and provides in-depth analysis of the production and economic features of Roman villa settlements. Key to the study will be preserved plant remains found on specific villa sites across the Roman world. Hidden in the sediment are clues to Sicily’s ancient past and evidence for its agricultural productivity that was an important part of the Roman world. Helping to uncover this evidence is part of the diverse field of environmental archaeology, the analysis of which unfortunately which has not been carried out at many sites, leaving an incomplete record of important features of the ancient environment

Building a High School to College Connection via E-Publishing

    Get PDF
This poster describes how Drake Memorial Library at the College at Brockport is partnering with the Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library to encourage publication of winning high school essays and creative works in a college institutional repository. The Sokol High School Literary Awards Program is an annual creative writing contest for high school students in grades nine through twelve that has been sponsored by the Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library since 1958. Prizes are awarded in the categories of poetry, prose and performance. The process of establishing this collaboration, developing a workflow, and obtaining permissions in preparation for publication are highlighted. Learning outcomes include sharing how this library outreach program can be replicated and enhanced by others. The goal is to increase visibility for open access student scholarship and enhance self-advocacy. The project introduces students to publishing an online work for their resume, college applications, etc. The partnership establishes a connection between the student authors and Brockport that can be the start of a college pathway for the future. We have partnered with the Sokol Award program for the past five years (since 2015), and have now published a total of 35 articles in this collection. The collection can be viewed globally and winning student works have been downloaded collectively over 1242 times in the past five years

Does Sports Build Positive Youth Development?

    Get PDF
Youth sports are as popular as they have ever been and their popularity is increasing. According to The National Council on Youth Sports (NCYS) “over 44 million youth participated in organized sports in 2008, and more recent estimations suggest an estimated 45 million youth participate in organized sports” (Hodge, Kanters, Forneris, Bocarro, & Sayre, 2017, p. 35). The purpose of this synthesis was to discover two different things. The first purpose was to identify whether sports builds positive youth development and to explore how to best encourage positive youth development in a sport setting. After synthesizing the literature, results indicated that sports does indeed develop positive youth development. However, it was found that playing youth sports does not automatically develop positive youth development; an intentionally designed program has to be in place in order for positive youth development (PYD) to occur. Autonomy-supportive environments that focused on the well-being of the athlete were major influences on whether PYD occurred in a program. Future research should be done with larger sample sizes and more quantitative studies. In addition, understanding the parent perspective is critical because they have the ultimate say in whether their child continues in a program or not

The Effects Socioeconomic Status, Nutrition, and Physical Activity Have on the Youth

    Get PDF
The purpose of this synthesis was to identify the effects socioeconomic status (SES), Physical activity (PA), and nutrition have on the youth. Despite the known benefits of being physically active and eating healthier food options, fewer than half of the U.S. school aged children meet national recommendations of 60 minutes of daily PA and one third fewer meet recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption (Donnelly & Springer, 2015). This synthesis examined literature and articles which primarily focused on how low SES youth are effected by their communities differently than youth who reside in high SES communities. The following four questions were answered: (1) how is SES related to health? (2) How does SES influence nutritional habits in youth? (3) How does SES influence physical activity habits in youth? And (4) what effect do intervention programs have on promoting PA and proper nutrition for youth in Low SES areas? This synthesis found that in order for the youth within low SES communities to have a future with less health complications due to obesity, schools should provide better intervention programs focused on PA & nutrition, qualified physical educators should be hired, low SES community food-stores should provide heathier food options and parental support is the key for youth to start having healthier habits

Using Multicultural Literature to Enhance the Reading Skills of Youth of Color

    Get PDF
21st Century youths live in a diverse world. Students of today, especially youths of color, struggle to connect with what they are learning due to an outdated curriculum that follows literature from the literary canon. The use of multicultural literature needs to be in every classroom for students to understand and appreciate diversity, find self-worth, and truly identify with what they are reading. Implementing multicultural literature into the curriculum will help students be engaged and motivate them to read. It is every educator’s duty to ensure students are reaching their fullest potential, that means having a healthy balance of the literary canon and more contemporary multicultural texts. It may be difficult for teachers to change their developed curriculum for a number of reasons but there are a number of resources readily available to help with an adjustment
