How Social Media Effects College Students’ Perceptions of Police Brutality

    Get PDF
In the past few years, police brutality and excessive use of force has been one of the most prevalent social issues facing our society. Specific cases such as the ones involving Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Freddie Gray has garnered national attention, and sparked widespread controversy. The newfound interest in this issue is heavily linked to the advent of cell phones and social media which allow for the public to hold the police accountable for their actions and gives them a direct way for their opinions to be heard. Social media easily allows for raw, unedited videos of transgressions between police and citizens to be widely distributed and connects to generations that are not as invested in traditional news sources. Despite the affect that social media has had in this shift in the media, there is little research on how social media discussions and posts have impacted how the public perceives police brutality. This study seeks to find if there is a correlation between social media consumption and how college students view the issue of police brutality. The relationship will be determined by gauging students’ consumption of both traditional and social media and their opinions on specific use of force situations

The Effects of Parental Stress on Perception of Child Health

    Get PDF
This study is to examine parents that are also completing coursework at The College at Brockport and the impact of parental stress on their perception of their child’s health. This study will evaluate the influence of parental stress on parenting style, the child’s actual health, the misperception of their child’s health, and the impact of more permissive parenting on the relationship between parental stress and poor child health. The study included four participants whose children attend the Brockport Child Development Center at The College at Brockport. Participants took an anonymous survey that contained modified versions of the Parental Stress Scale and Parenting Style Questionnaire and provided information about their child’s health habits. Results indicate that all four participants believe their children to have a ‘healthy’ diet quality, though only one of the four children received the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day made by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Recommendations for future research are offered

Alternative Energy Sources for Fossil Fuel Independence

    Get PDF
Fossil fuel dependence has caused a massive increase in atmospheric greenhouse gas levels. These gases pollute the environment and warm the planet, resulting in climate change effects that will soon be irreversible. To prevent this, clean alternative energy sources need to be developed further and used to gain fossil fuel independence in the near future. Possible alternative energy sources to meet this goal are nuclear fission, fusion, solar, hydro, geothermal, and wind. In this paper, the results of an experiment performed to study on the relationship between a solar panel’s angle with the sun and its power production will be reported. It was found that angle of the sun on the solar panel is a significant factor in its power production ability. A change in the angle with the sun of 82° results in a 47% reduction in power production

The One Disorder That Literally Crushes Your Mind

    Get PDF
Hydrocephaly is one of the most debilitating neurological disorders. Given its prevalence, in order to treat it, it is key to understand whether it is a congenital disorder (birth defect) or the result of physical trauma. Multiple genetic disorders, and in some cases physical trauma can induce hydrocephaly. Severe forms, if left untreated, can lead to childhood death while individuals with non-severe hydrocephaly can live for years without treatment. Observing hydrocephaly’s impact on past populations can provide data that can eventually lead to advancements in its treatment. This study is based on cranial measurement analysis and literature review. Hydrocephaly affects one in every 10,000 individual. Looking at how individuals in the past survived with this disorder without treatment can lead to breakthroughs regarding the treatment of this disease. This study focuses on the most likely cause of Cranium 10s deformation.https://digitalcommons.brockport.edu/research_posters/1030/thumbnail.jp

The Effect of Sound on Attention Restoration

    Get PDF
Prolonged use of directed attention leads to cognitive fatigue, characterized in part by a reduced capacity to maintain focus. Studies have shown that recorded nature sounds can have a stimulating effect on the process of recovering from attentional fatigue; other studies also suggest that the emotional response to sound may affect the restoration of directed attention. To see if a preference for natural sounds might explain their restorative quality, we compared the effects of bird calls and music on the rate of attention restoration. We induced cognitive depletion in 116 college undergraduates and then tested their attentional capacity using a digit span backwards task before and after exposure to a sound condition. We also used the Geneva Emotional Music Scale to evaluate participants’ emotional response to the sound. Hypothesis tests revealed no statistically significant effect of sound type on restoration, nor any significant correlations between measures of emotional response to music and attention restoration. Findings do offer some weak support for our hypothesis; we discuss this alongside problems with the study design and suggestions for future studies

Missing from Research: Exposing the Deficit in Knowledge and Research of Endometriosis and Women’s Health

    Get PDF
Endometriosis, one of the many reproductive health related diseases that specifically impact female bodies, could be either less prevalent, or less excruciating in a society that integrates a feminist approach to health care. As one of the many women impacted by the disease, I could be living a less painful and distressing life. I would not be the one in the “one of ten women” who exist with an inferior quality of life due to the lack of knowledge and research surrounding women\u27s health

    The Pretty Pink Box

    Get PDF
This essay focuses on the consumerization, capitalization, and popularization of feminism within mainstream culture: how it is branded, how it is portrayed, and who it represents. As a young consumer and feminist, I acknowledge that this needs to be addressed for the sole reason that feminism is not a trend or fad that can afford to die out for its goals and strife are far from over- when we water down a political and social movement based on equality into nothing more than a trendy label, we put our needs at risk. It is important to critique and question what is happening around us even if it is appears to be “fighting” the good fight

Exploring the Factors that Influence Successful Aging in Older Adults

    Get PDF
The topic of successful aging has been of reoccurring interest to researchers. Since the lifespan is increasing globally, it is essential to have an awareness of the factors that maximize older adult’s health and allow them to adapt and manage the changes that come with aging. This research moves the dialogue beyond clinical health terms to gain a more holistic view of the factor that influence older adults\u27 perceptions of successful aging. The goal of this study is to increase knowledge regarding the health of older adults and understand what factors in their environment influence their views of successful aging.https://digitalcommons.brockport.edu/research_posters/1026/thumbnail.jp
