From Conservation to Recreation: Al Smith and Robert Moses and the Dawn of the Modern Liberalism

    No full text
Written for Doctor Jose Torre\u27s History of New York course, this paper examines the early 20th century\u27s shift from TR progressivism to FDR liberalism by identifying a vital intermediary between the two traditions. Governor Al Smith inherited a progressive reform movement that was mired in its own condescension and pious abstention from the dirtier aspects of New York politics. But Smith, a political brawler of the Tammany stripe, managed to wrangle a diverse coalition to effect real change in his state, a coalition that FDR would take nationwide in his 1932 campaign and his implementation of the New Deal. Viewed through the lens of Smith\u27s revolutionary state parks program, this piece reveals the many ways that Al Smith brought New York politics to the national stage and helped create what we recognize as modern liberalism

Multiple Intelligences in the Mathematics Classroom: A Curriculum Project on Linear Equations and Inequalities in One Variable

    Get PDF
This curriculum project explores the utilization of Howard Gardener’s Multiple Intelligences theory in the mathematics classroom. There are eight distinct multiple intelligences that can be found in heterogeneous classrooms of students and often students have a blend of these eight intelligences. This curriculum project discusses different methods for integrating certain multiple intelligences into the mathematics classroom. The multiple intelligences that have been included in this curriculum project are Verbal/Linguistic, Logical/Mathematical, Visual/Spatial, Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal. The Algebra unit this curriculum project focuses on is Linear Equations and Inequalities in One Variable. The curriculum provided includes a variety of ways to incorporate the multiple intelligences theory throughout each of the thirteen lessons within the unit

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy: Teaching Toward Student Interest in an Algebra Classroom

    No full text
Teachers utilize countless strategies in hopes of their learners becoming connected with the material. Unfortunately, said strategies may or may not be effective, depending on how they are approached and how the students react. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy is a strategy that is becoming more popular by educators. This curriculum project presents three examples that align with Cultural Relevant Pedagogy based upon students’ interests, hobbies and cultural upbringings. The curriculum provided explores opportunities to successfully practice Culturally Relevant Pedagogy through color-conscious disposition, informed variation and holding students to high expectations regardless of diversities

Neither Rescorla and Wagner nor SOCR Predict the Double Blocking Effect

    No full text
In a traditional blocking experiment, A+ trials precede AX+ trials, and responding to X at Test is weak relative to controls. Using the allergist task, the present study investigated the effect of an additional blocking cue presented in compound (i.e., ABX+, where B is also a previously trained excitor). The study found evidence of a double blocking effect, a proposed associative learning effect in which blocking with two blocking cues results in increased behavioral control by the target cue relative to blocking with a single blocking cue. In Phase 1 participants received A+/B+ training, in Phase 2 participants received ABX+ trials. Relative to controls, responding to X was greater in the double blocking group than in the traditional single blocking group. The Sometimes-Competing Retrieval (SOCR) model ostensibly should be able to explain double blocking through second-order comparator processes; however, a simulation analysis determined that SOCR was unable to satisfactorily explain the effect or fit the present data. Moreover, Rescorla-Wagner did no better than SOCR in fitting double blocking. The double blocking effect thus presents a challenge yet to be surmounted by a model

Examining how the Presence of Invasive Swallow-wort (Vincetoxicum sp.) Affects the Abundance of Earthworms

    No full text
Swallow-wort (Vincetoxicum sp.), an invasive plant in Western New York, outcompetes native species such as common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca). Swallow-wort may release allelochemicals that change the composition of the soil to benefit its own growth. Earthworms are also an invasive species in our area. In excess, they can till the soil too much, drying it out and making it difficult for any plants to grow. While overturning the soil has its benefits, too many worms can cause the soil horizons to merge, displacing minerals and loosening up the foundation for most plants. Because no one had ever studied the relationship between these organisms, I hypothesized that neither plot type nor season should affect the presence of earthworms. In addition, I had reason to believe that swallow-wort could not only hinder earthworm abundance, but it could also promote it. During the summer and fall, I marked 30 paired forest plots in Mendon Ponds and Oatka Creek Parks where swallow-wort bordered a neighboring patch of non-swallowwort. Within these areas, vegetation was surveyed and worms were collected using the liquid extraction method. The worms were identified, measured and weighed. While non-swallowwort plots tended to have more worms, swallowwort plots had more worm biomass. However, these differences were not statistically significant for either the summer or the fall. The presence of swallow-wort does not appear to affect the presence of earthworms. In addition, the season did not seem to have an effect on the presence of earthworms. These results supported both of my hypotheses

Dance Integration Professional Developments: Impacts of Dance in Teaching

    No full text
Imagine you are back in elementary school. What is the first memory that comes to mind? Are you drawing a picture of your pet? Are you playing your favorite game in gym? Are you working on fun projects? It is likely that the significant knowledge you gained was not reinforced through routine worksheets or standardized tests. Students recollect information more readily and clearly when their learning is engaging and fun. A great way to get students involved and engaged in learning is through arts integration. “Arts integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form” (Silverstein & Layne, 2010, p. 1)

The State of the Science on Family Presence During Resuscitation

    No full text
Cardiac arrest occurs, “when a person’s heart stops beating,” stopping the heart from perfusing blood, oxygen, and other nutrients throughout the body (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). In 2017, the American Heart Association reported that 350,000 people in the United States experience cardiac arrest (American Heart Association, 2017). In recent years, that number has risen to almost 475,000 (American Heart Association, 2020). On a global scale, over 17.5 million people die from cardiac arrest (Automatic External Defibrillator, 2018). Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency lifesaving procedure that can reverse cardiac arrest (AHA, 2020). Family presence during CPR is a controversial topic that has been the focus of much debate within the medical community. This thesis will focus on examining the body of literature on both sides of this debate in order to clearly identify and describe best practices associated with successful implementation within the United States healthcare system

Entre y dentro de las fronteras: Una comparación histórica y estructural entre los organismos de inteligencias en EE.UU. y España

    No full text
