Considering Contemporary: Finding Purpose for Canonical Works in the Modern Classroom

    No full text
There has been a longstanding debate on whether or not the canon should continue to deserve a place in the modern inclusive classroom. One side will argue that the canon contains meaningful lessons and content that influenced writings today, so it should still be thoughtfully taught, whereas other sides will argue that the canon is an overused crutch that teachers lean on instead of trying to find more modern, diverse texts. Considering both sides of the argument, there is a way to blend the canon and the contemporary in the modern day classroom without putting so much value on the canon. The canon can be a stepping stone for learning, but it does not have to be the entire path. Educators should be mindful of what students can learn from looking at the canon critically rather than passively, and use the canon to help reinforce skills that students develop from the contemporary texts that they read. There is a place where the canon and contemporary can live in harmony in the modern day classroom, but it must be done meaningfully and it involves commitment and intention on the teacher’s part. The canon does not need to be praised or put on a pedestal, but it does not need to be erased entirely. There is value in critical analysis, and in using the canon as a place of comparison with contemporary texts, students can evaluate change, privilege, bias, and their own values—thus growing not only as students, but as individuals

An Examination of Collegiate Student Athletes Maintaining Positive Mental Health

    No full text
Abstract Student athletes who perform at any collegiate level are required to balance the roles of being both a scholar and an athlete. The stress of a college student is magnified as student athletes must plan their schedule down to the minute of each day in order to keep up with the duties in each role. Many students at the college level, athletes or not, are hesitant to seek help because of the negative perception surrounding mental health. The stigma that receiving help makes a person look weak, or identifying that they might have an issue, scares many people. The purpose of this synthesis is to review the literature on effective strategies for maintaining positive mental health for student athletes

The Effects of Parenting Styles on Youth Sport Participation and Enjoyment

    No full text
Parenting styles affect youth sports participation and enjoyment in many ways. The purpose of this synthesis was to examine the effects of autonomy-supporting and controlling parenting styles on youth sports. The methods included the search and analysis on numerous studies that were organized using an article grid (See Appendix A). Common themes found were the effects of parenting styles on support, values passed on to children and pressures placed on the child. The autonomy-supportive parenting style showed to provide an open atmosphere for the child to participate in youth sport, allowed to feel the highest level of support, generated a task orientation, valued learning over status, as well as felt less pressure to perform from outside sources. The controlling parenting style however is shown to have closed communication between the child and parent, generating fear and the feeling of conditional love and support dependent on performance. The values passed on to these children tend to be more of status and comparing themselves to others as well as feeling added pressures to perform

The Feudal Origins of the Western Legal Tradition

    No full text
This paper draws a distinction between ‘communitarian’ and ‘rationalist’ legal orders on the basis of the implied political strategy. We argue that the West’s solution to the paradox of governance – that a government strong enough to protect rights cannot itself be restrained from violating those rights – originates in certain aspects of the feudal contract, a confluence of aspects of communitarian Germanic law, which enshrined a contractual notion of political authority, and rationalistic Roman law, which supported large-scale political organization. We trace the tradition of strong but limited government to the conflict between factions with an interest in these legal traditions – nobles and the crown, respectively – and draw limited conclusions for legal development in non-Western contexts

The Effect of Pedal Crank Arm Length and Seat Height on Joint Angles in an Upright Cycling Position

    Get PDF
Manipulations in crank arm length and seat height have resulted in significant changes in cycling performance. To better understand how these manipulations affect cycling performance, the purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of 5 pedal crank arm lengths (110, 145, 180, 215 and 250 mm) and 3 seat height (short, medium, and long) on joint angles (minimum, maximum, and range of motion) of the hip, knee, and ankle, as determined by 3 electrogoniomters in an upright cycling position for17 male participants. Nine 5 x 3 Repeated Measures Factor ANOVAs revealed that 35 mm increments in crank arm length from 110-250 mm resulted in a significant (p \u3c 0.01): (1) decrement in the minimum hip and knee angle; (2) increment in the minimum ankle angle; (3) increment in the hip and knee range of motion; and (4) decrement in the ankle range of motion. It was determined that 6 cm changes in seat height from the shortest to the longest seat height resulted in a significant (p \u3c 0.01): (1) increment in the minimum and maximum joint angle of the hip, knee, and ankle; and (2) increment in the range of motion of the knee. No significant interactions were found between crank arm length and seat height for different angle measurements (minimum, maximum, and range of motion) of the hip, knee, and ankle. In conjunction with the results of previous investigations, certain joint angle ranges result in more effective cycling performance
